Ok, enough of this crap. Let's get one thing straight here folks. If this game is such a wow clone, then explain to me why they don't have a playable evil side? For those of you who play, I am well aware of monster play, but I mean a real playable from the get go evil side. I'll tell you why; it's due to the fact that it would not fit with the story line. So instead of just taking a shit on the story, and making the pvp cround happy, the developers chose to stick with the story. You have to respect that, even if you hate the game. Tell me that they wouldn't have sold more copies if there was an evil side to play? And Monster play, hell, there's an original idea right there. Playing an evil alt that starts at 50 with the sole purpose of hunting good players, and all the while enhancing your main good character. That must have came right from WoW.
Oh, and how about housing? Real tangible houses and communities. True, they are instanced communties but they are fairly large and very cool. You actually own a home with neighbors and a community, complete with everything in the world in terms of decoration. I guess they took that from WoW also huh? How about the deeds and title system? Right from WoW? The Family Generations? WoW also? The fact is.. half of the people arguing on this topic have not even played the game, or played long enough to have an educated opinion. There is a lot of cool new ideas in this game. And for the record, as I have stated before, I started my MMO carrer forged in teh fires of the greatest yet shittiest game ever created... Shadowbane. And I've played literally every MMO since. While they all take and borrow from each other, they all have aspects that make them fun to someone. Hell, I know a bunch of guys playing FLYFF and having a ball! I think that game is a piece of shit, but there is something about it they like...lol, takes all kinds.
Well said brother, Thats gotta shut alot of people mouths.I was gonna make a post like that.........really
All said and done , the dude is right. All games have unique aspects.Lotro is no clone to wow , definition to those who know how to read a dictionary
; A clone is product, or organism that is genetically identical to the unit or individual from which it was derived.
WOW = lotro identical? After reading Oziaz's post you tell me.
Heh... we don't need to worry about hype perception... you do. We aren't the ones visiting and posting on a forum designed for a game we don't play or like. LOL! How shallow is that?
Thanks for showing everyone what great arguments that those that don't like LoTRo have though. I mean who wouldn't believe you after all the great material you've pontificated for us? Oh that's right, that part... the whole "great material" seems to be a bit... lacking.
Originally posted by Perception I can just picture all the people laughing at Columbus when he sailed off to the mythical "new world". I mean, the world was flat, everyone knew it. The fool was going to fall right off the edge. And all their buddies agreed with them, and joined in on pointing fingers, calling names, and patting each other on the back for showing Columbus just how stupid he was.
So please feel free to talk about me, rather than to me. Nod your heads and place your hands firmly on the well worn spots on the same backs as you always do. You win the internet. The same droll fans and droll shills spouting off the same droll drivel that you always have about the same droll Turbine products that have always been marketed in this way. Sure you have a purpose on these boards... spreading disinformation is always great for business...
Back up my claims? Been there, done that, over and over again. It never matters. I've provided links to details on Turbines marketing techniques, management history, investors, and shady business practices on many occasions. All I can say is that it must be nice to have the selective memory of a fanboi. Living with tunnel vision must be bliss.
Feel free to continue to insult anyone who brings into question the validity of all the hype behind LORTO. It wont make any new servers open. Feel free to claim that the game is growing in subscriptions by leaps and bounds due to its amazing design and the awards it has received. It couldn't have anything to do with the free trial or the game being 9.99 in bargain bins (which includes one month of play, heck, I'd almost buy that).
Okay man , have it your way.
But i sure have never seen a person hate a game so bad that he goes out and finds half rumor information, about a company's awards that all games have fair and square by gamer votes, to post because he has nothing better to do.
i havent played the game....but all i hear is negative comments about this game.... ....for the videos iv seen this game looks pretty decent......and its only been out for a yaer and it has 300k + subs....which is great for a new mmo....
If you haven't noticed the majority of the people who post on this site are negative. Just peruse any game's forum and you will the title's of the post and the general responses. I find that most posts have about 3 out of 10 positive or constructive entries and the rest are negative. Test this and see for yourself.
Why is that? I have an idea about:
Most of the people who post here are "in between games", bored with the game they currently play, and/or cannot be positive about games forthcoming without slamming a different forthcoming game (i.e. - I love WAR and AOC will SUCK!! or I love TCoS and I know for a fact that WAR is a WoW clone)
That pretty much sums up the crowd here. So i wouldn't say that most people hate it. I would say that the people who post on MMORPG tend to be negative.
Don't worry, this community is in no way a representation of reality.
Play LotRO and judge for yourself - it has some great qualities and some rough spots - like all games do.
Here you go, a couple quotes from perception tell all you need to know. Gotta love it when they make it this easy. Enough to make any gamer very, very glad that he doesn't like the games you play.
From this thread: www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/1499182#1499182 Quotes from Perception "My griefing career started back in the early days of EQ1. Back in those days, many players used to congregate in the East Common tunnels for buying and selling. Lots of lowbies and newbies were there in abundance. There was a certain high lvl NPC that roamed the zone by the name of Sergeant Slate. Since my Shadowknight was max level and fairly well geared, I could take a bit of a pounding from this NPC and live to tell the tale. So what I would do, is cast my dot/snare on him, and run him into the thick of all the players in the EC tunnel. I would then hit my shout macro that went something like "Help me kill Sgt Slate in the tunnel! He drops 100 plat and I'll split it with ya!", or something to that effect. Inevitably, several noobies or lowbies would rush up and start attacking the NPC. At that point, I would promptly Feign Death, and watch as he would turn and annihilate them all while I just chuckled. And yes, I did this all the time.
My true griefing days were spent in WoW though, but that is a story for another time ."
"There were 2 other fun griefing spots for me in Everquest. As an Ogre Shadowknight, my character was absolutely huge, and EQ has collision detection, so you can't just run through characters. The zone lines to Lower Guk and Solusek were notorious for trains, and it just so happened that the size of the entrance/exit area was barely big enough for an ogre. I could zone in and hang out and just block the zoneline so those poor fools running for safety would run smack dab into me, and have no other choice but to die. I could then either Feign Death, or just zone out myself to avoid the train. Many, many nasty tells and shouts were sent my way for those little experiences."
besides that being an awsome story....IMO nothings gunna be the good old days of EQ......ahhh....i miss it =P
here's something the Yellow Troll won't comprehend
I just bought Vanguard yesterday, and I actually like it very much
Since I have founder payment for LOTRO that runs out in April, and now I have 28 days to test VG, I think I'll split my time between the two.
Here is the trick: I will still say that the most successful P2P MMO after WOW is LOTRO, and it will remain so for some more time (probably longer that most people expect).
And here is to totally confuse the Troll almighty: I played WOW for about 14 months, and enjoyed it (until I reached level cap).
Now what?

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
The things that drove me away from this game was the combat, combat animations, lack of diversity in classes, lack of real meaningful pvp and the clunky interface. Also, it seems like the devs have more control over how you play your character than you do. LOTRO is a good game and I can see how people like it though. It had a fairly smooth release and from what I've heard still runs pretty well with substantial free content updates. Still, from my experience and from what I've heard from others its just not good enough or different enough to take me away from WoW.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Cool... I am merely curious about the reasons. To me, it seems that the devs can not win. People want them to be both original and clone systems from other games. *shrug*
i personally did nt hate lord of the rings but nor did i love it enough to continue subscribing after the first months play . without meaningful pvp a game has a limited appeal for me. i think the mistake was to follow the story of lord of the rings rather than just have an open middle earth online that alowed you to play the evil side ( i also know about monster play but that really does nt do it for me ) .for an mmorpg to be dynamic pvp is crucial . if players like pve and want to avoid being ganked give them pve servers but give people a choice .
theres a reason why warcraft has 9 million players its because they know what people want and theres one reason most other games hav nt done anywhere near as well is that they hav nt learned from warcraft (or in the case of vanguard put out an unfinnished product ).dont get me wrong i m not saying warcraft is perfect theres some great ideas in games like lord of the rings they simply missed the boat for one reason

Yeah. This is a bit of a half-truth.. I've never gotten into PvP in a PK since. Its drole, plays out the same and fairly unbalanced in most or all MMORPG games. Though I do like teaming with friends and coop boss hunting or just simple killing enemies or running quest. I do like OP PvP, group combat is always fun.. laggy but fun. Good vs Evil is ok but I'd rather a 3rd element be thrown in to keep that flowing as G vs E is too linear at times.
As for splitting the servers.. I dont know.. you dont spend all ur money to make a RPG just to have "idiots" run around and smash each other and have all that work on the other stuff goto waste. Mostly Economy, crafting, quests, epics, team-systems, and so on.. plus the many diverse classes.. some arent even able to PvP but work well in groups or fighting larg bosses or massive amounts of enemies.. all aspects of a MMO-RPG
Now if you want brainless brashing you can get for free. Play a MMO-FPS. Xteel and WolfTeam are hella fun and pure PvP and of kourse pre-balance so even a Lv1 can kill a Lv30 person. they just can look kooler. Maybe slightly stronger and slightly more defence but trust.. they wont win all the time. Specially in WolfTeam.
ATM im playing something else and probably wont try LofRs for awhile. Unless I just get rich.
But if you truely want PvP without the RPG then dont play a RPG game. Seem so simple to me. Why try to PvP in a RPG game so much. I've never played a console RPG game and was like.. mann i want to kill a person. Im more into the story board that most games spend alot time making... most, not all.
Once again, WolfTeam and Xteel are very fun PvP games if you just want to cut, slash and burn ur opponent and like you listed. There's always WC and Rakion I think. Its a great combat game that has a RPG look but basically combat with combat moves.. like dodge, slide and attacks work on the angle you're at so you might do a different ove or hit a different part of the body. So, there yea go... leave Lord of the Rings to what it is.. a story.

Is that the big insult coming from a LOTRO fan? I mean, isn't it a given that most MMO players in general are pretty much geeks? We all love swords and sorcery, magic and fantasy, and comic books sorta fit right into that whole geek thing. I used to read comics all the time. I'm sure many MMO players did, or still do. Comics, or Graphic Novels for those of us who care, are a truly amazing media these days. My "buddies" down at the comic shop are all gamers too.
You know else they sell at comic shops? Warhammer figurines. Oh, and there just so happens to be an MMO coming out based on Warhammer, in case you didn't know. Seen a lot of Conan books there, too. Amazing coincidence that there is also a Conan MMO. Do I even have to mention City of Heroes?
So yeah, if you try to insult comic book culture, you are pretty much insulting a lot of gamers, as well. That should make you pretty popular on the forums here.
Edit: I mean, whats next? Going to insult me for playing DnD too?
oooh youre just a big walking stereotype arent you! ill bet you like dressing up in historical army clothes and re-inacting battles too.
Ah. Didn't realize you were just flaming me for the sake of trying to make yourself seem superior. Ya got me. Carry on.
Ive personally been wondering why so many people call this a WoW clone. If you reall think about it all MMO's are based off of the same concept (Do quest, level up, etc) And do remember WoW was not the first MMO to come out. People just base other games off of WoW cause its so popular.
But back on topic, LoTRO Is actually a very good game. The story is good, the servers are excellent. And it just has its own extra twist. The player housing is a nice new feature and the PvP is different. Overall a good MMO with the LoTR Touch.
This is simply not true. YOu obviously missed a game Asheron's Call 2 made by Turbine in 2002. It used the same engine as LOTRO. Same interface. It was a first linear heavy solo quest oriented game with simple mechanics, no xp death penalty.. and overall very simple linear game. WoW copied it completely. Lotro is just an evolution from AC2 not WoW. Lotro is Asheron's Call 3 in Middle Earth world.
Agree/
Had fun from lvl 1 to 35 then lotro became boring. Stopped at lvl 49 because didn't like angmar. (thought it could be total fun at high lvl and i have been completely disappointed.)
But lotro for low + mid lvl is really cool and fun !
Shire, old forest, barrow downs, very cool ! nice !Bree, fornost, ered luin, angmar= boring
"The things that drove me away from this game was the combat, combat animations, lack of diversity in classes, lack of real meaningful pvp and the clunky interface. good game but boring game ^^
i can't hate it, polished and good looking, simply boring.
I thought Agmar was OK, but not really up to the same level as the zones that preceeded it (save for the Rift which I was impressed with). Those pillars in the middle of the zone that butcher you if you aren't attuned are also a nice touch, but I was expecting the zone on the other side of them to be more exciting then it truned out to be (the first half of the zone is a lot better done than the second half, imo). I was also dissapointed with the Misty Mountians when I first got there, but now that they've added Goblin town it's one of my favorites. All the references to the Hobbit are a great touch.
In any case, they are revamping Angmar heavilly in the patch that's going in next week. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it. Hopefully the last parts of it will seem a bit more epic.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I have to agree with most of the folks here in saying its an "ok" game. I just finished giving it a second shot since I played at launch but the crafting system was a game killer for me. It needs a major overall in all areas from crit rates, level of resources (i.e. needing hides from animals you cant kill to make armor at your level), and the fact that its almost impossible to make a profit off of most things you have to make grinding up in levels. It seems like crafting was put in to be yet another money sink. It is impossible to start new and craft and use what you craft.
I just reactivated my eq2 account and am going back there... its sad really. I wanted to badly to really fall in love with this game.
I also tried this game out, played to around lvl 30, and found it extremely easy to lose interest. It really didn't bring anything to the table except boredom and as you mentioned, a frustrating crafting system.
I have been playing LOTRO for about 3 weeks now, give or take a few days, and after playing WOW (Yes, WOW, I said it, kill me?) for a couple years I actually found it quite refreshing. In fact, I would go so far to say that I had the most fun leveling up in WOW compared to all other MMORPG's I have ever played (there have been a few). And LOTRO is comparable in fun-levels.
Yes, the combat systems are very similar.
Yes, the questing systems are very similar.
Yes, they are both linear.
However, there have been few MMORPG's that I have palyed (or played) that have had radically different combat systems. I consider quest based exp systems to be far more interested compared to camping mobs, so good for me? Or good for the mobs?
I also find that LOTRO is a far more relaxed game, where I can go on for a couple hours and actually get a lot done. The trait systems also allows for a constant way of contributing to your end game character by doing small tasks at lower levels.
This being said, I have only gotten one character to level 20, and switched to a different character simply on a whim last week. So far however, the experience has been just as fun as the first time I hit 20.

Ah. Didn't realize you were just flaming me for the sake of trying to make yourself seem superior. Ya got me. Carry on.
The irony...
Really, does it matter what else he says after that? Nope. I didn't think so.

good game but boring game ^^
i can't hate it, polished and good looking, simply boring.
Basy
