how come wow is always the end to this little scheme, wow wasnt the first to use a ui like that,  other mmo's before wow did

wow did absolutely nothing new, they just made it more accessible

btw, all games in all genres copy... its how games are, not just this genre

    Lord of the Rings:

    Warhammer Online:

They don't look similar at all. If you mean the skillbar, then get used to it, every game has a skillbar. How much innovation can you put into an interface!?

I really dont think they are very similar at all other than the fact that they are both fantasy MMO's

This threads a joke right?  A break from all the WAR looks just like WoW threads.  WAR has green goblins + my pantry has green beans = WAR looks like my pantry.

wow warhammer online really looks like shit lol. Hopefuly that image was from the settings turned down to extremely low with all the graphics turned basically off. I hope the final product doesn't look that bad. Actually, I dont really care what it looks like. I wont be buying this game due to the fact most of the annoying WoW rejects will be migrating to this game.

I couldn't find a good screenshot so I just found a gameplay video and turned it to fullscreen and screenshotted it and then edited it with Paint, so yeah it looks like garbage, but you get the gist of the UI.

The UI in WoW (and LoTRO) is very simiilar to the AC 2 UI, which was itself a slightly more user freindly iteration of the UI in older games such as AC, EQ and DAoC.  Those games in turn could be argued to have drawn heavily on older "3D"  CRPGs such as Eye of the Beholder or Ultima Underworld.  Hotbars and health bars have been around forever.

In any case, AC II pretty much nailed that style of UI.  In older games you nearly always had to spend some time fidgiting with the UI to get it playable.  For example the first thing I would always do in EQ was move the hotbars around and adjust their opacity so that I could see well.  AC II was pretty good right out of the box.  Not that surprising then that WoW decided to draw on one of the best for inspiration when designing their UI.  And really, they would have been idiots not to.

WoW popularized that style of UI, and because of that developers have a two very compelling reasons not to screw with it in their products:

    (A) WoW is now the defacto gateway MMO.  In would guess that at least half of the players in any new MMO will have played it, there is no reason to confuse them

    (B) Don't "fix" something that isn't broken.  The devs of WoW swiped a lot of their UI elemenents from AC II (a MMO that was really never very popular, after all) because it worked so well.   LoTRO is the next interation of that UI from the guys who made it in the first place.  But I would also argue that they would have borrowed much of the UI design from WoW even if Blizzard hadn't done the same to them in the first place.  It works really well, you would be stupid not to.

And so what does this mean for us as gamers?  Well apart from giving posters on message boards cannon fodder, it means that we now have a nearly standard UI.  Much the same way that UIs in FPSers have been standardized for years.  I personally think it's a good thing.  When I fire up a new game, I don't want to spend my first 10-20 mins  fighting with the UI.  I want to play.  The point of the game is the gameplay, not "Adventures in UI Management."

A little more on topic, the gameplay in WAR looks like the next logical evoiution of RvR warfare.  They are also doing some innovative things with public quests that i am very interested in.  It's definitely on my radar.  As for the UI, as long as they don't fuck it up I really could not care less.

To anyone familiar with table top gaming, the art direction of WAR is quit distinct and recognizable.  And it's a source older than WoW or Warcraft in general by a good decade.  I would also expect many gameplay elements to be similar between WoW and WAR.  However the majority of those gameplay elements are at least as old as Everquest.  I am not looking forward to thousands of net kiddies not getting that when WAR launches and accusing it endlessly of being a WoW clone.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

It's just a default UI anyways.  Most of these games have drastically modified UI elements shortly after release (even during beta at times) since they are almost all designed to be totally customized by those into that sort of thing.  So no big deal, and has been said before...who cares?  It's a ui.  The gameplay is what matters.  The UI is functional, that's fine, it's similar to another game, oh noez?

Now to expand on this, and how unimportant a matter as default UI comparison is, here is a link to a screen of a UI from Lotro that has been modified, so as you can see, if the similarity between the UI in the two games gets to you, then simply change the way it looks, as this UI from lotro looks *nothing* like the UI from WAR.

    Modified Lotro ui: www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/full406.jpg
