Deep Crafting, like SWG

TyfoTyfo Member Posts: 18

Hello all.

I'm looking for a game with a solid, complex and deep crafting system, where items are "unique" (in the way that stats differ depending on resources used). Does such a game exist?

The reason I'm not playing SWG is that I'm worried about the small population, and whether it will die soonish.

Looking forward to: WAR, Darkfall, Earthrise,
Playing: Age of Conan
Have played: WoW, SWG, Runescape, EVE, LotR:O, ... and a lot of other MMO's.

Sort of, Ryzom's crafting is very deep.
But, if you are worried about the population and future, then Ryzom is not for you. The future is extremely uncertain, as the publisher is bankrupt. At the moment you can download and play the free trial, but not subscribe to the game.

You want a run down of all the games with decent crafting.  Here is my list.

    1.  Star Wars Galaxies -  This game has the best crafting in any mmo although it has faced a lot of prejudice due to NGE.   I would not be concerned with populations if you play on Bria or Bloodfin.  P2P.  Free Trial.

    2.  Eve Online-  This game has plenty of players so that is not an issue although the one thing that turns people away is the fact they they spend the entire game in deep space, and you never get outside of your ship although that is going to change here in the near future.  P2P . Free Trial.

    3.  Irth worlds-  This game has a lot of crafting and a lot of bugs.   The population is really low...like a ghost town.  Its a shame because the crafting is there. F2P.

    4.  Horizons -  This game is heavy on crafting as well.  I found this game to be empty when I was testing it out.  I have heard from some that the crafting is the best there us but have not played enough to verify this myself. P2P. Free Trial.

    5.  Ryzom -  This game has good crafting although I would stay far away from this until they resolve the issues with ownership first.  You can download and play for free right now on the noob island but with no billing in place you are unable to leave the island.

Thats about all I can really say as far as crafting.  I would say your best candidate as far as population and stability would have to be EvE Online although I would consider SWG as my definite second if not my first.  Irth and Horizons are 2 dead to enjoy the crafting and Ryzom........who knows where this will be.

There is my top 5.  I have been hunting for a good crafter as you are and have played most games listed on this site.  Anybody that can suggest anything better, lets hear it and why.

Yeah runescape killed crafting and merchanting with the kid-friendly fair trade policy. sniffle. and SWG, I wouldnt keep with it. Yeah ryzom has deep crafting but not necessarily interesting crafting. Wacraft has next to none, although Age of Conan has nice town building which is a type of crafting. EQ2 has cool crafting but IMO it doesnt have many players.

The OP asked for a game where the mix of materials made a difference in the item's stats. Every Caldari Charon freighter is exactly the same, no matter who made it. As I understand it, crafting in EVE is more an economic matter than figuring out the optimal stats for the item.

I know.  I guess I just listed my top 5 crafters.  Just take Eve out and I hit 4 out of 5.

I have tried EVE Online, and even though it's a good game and all, it was hard getting into, and crafting wasn't what I hoped and expected. The learning curve is extreme, and even though most people suggest to play at least a month until judging whether you like it or not, I couldn't live with logging on and not knowing what to do, or even have a clue of what to do.

Fallen Earth isn't out yet, but will be this year, and beta will be starting soon according to the devs. Check it out here or the main site at www.fallenearth.com for much more info about this upcoming game. It is not on most people's radar yet.

I can give you a few more games with crafting if you are really going to dig deep.  I guess the obvious is EQ2 based on responses from some.   I guess I have to throw Runescape and Ashen Empires into the mix if you can deal with the graphics.  That is pretty much it.  I have listed any crafter worth mentioning IMO.  You could say Voyage Century to go out on a limb but aside from cutting down trees and mining..there isn't much aside from that.    Basically crafting and good mmos is not good right now. lol

Runescape have as deep crafting as WoW. Which is definitely not what I'm looking for. The same with Wurm Online. And no, I don't care for graphics, as long as it has a decent playerbase.

Anyone know anything about the crafting in FFXI?

If you are after deep crafting you could give Vanguard a try.

I'm not much of a crafter myself, but alot of people in game say it has the best crafting system after SWG.  I've provided a useful link below.  I hope you find what you are looking for.

I love Vanguard, but the crafting is NOT fun. I do not know of a single person in my guild who enjoys crafting, even (and perhaps especially) those who have ground it up into the 30s and 40s.

I came late to SWG, but the crafting there was quite enjoyable. Especially the harvesting. Vanguard's crafting is just playing a mini-game over and over. Making the "real" items can be fun, but 99.9% of the crafting you do will be work order that require no harvesting or real items and that are repeated ad nauseum.

    Cannot recommend Vanguard crafting.

Really, why not go back to SWG? I found the population on Bria to be reasonably high (though I doubt it compares to SWG before NGE).

SWG does have a great crafting system, and the Dev team have demonstrated that they are commited to improving the Trader professions and making it even more interesting.

I would recommend the Beast Engineering process for anyone that likes really complicated and deep crafting systems, I really enjoy making pets with that system.

And if you enjoy the traditional crafting system, Beast Master brought a whole new bunch of items to make for each crafting profession that are used by BM's.  If you can make them well, they sell very well :)

So, now I've tried Age of Conan, not any deep crafting either.

Are there any new games on the horizon that would be interesting for me?

AoC's crafting system currently has some huge issues that need to be worked out. But the devs have stated that they are aware of the issues; I'm just waiting it out.

Doesn't matter, the system still isn't anything like SWG. :)

atm, I'm playing Age of Conan, but I'm gonna quit already. The promised an interesting crafting system, but honestly, it sucks. There's no market for your items, quest items are all a lot more powerfull, there's no customisation, ...

I like the game, but looking at it rationally, it failed to make true what it promissed.

Sadly, the problem lais for a big part in the general design, and that's something one can't change in a couple of patches (unless your name is SOE and the game is SWG, but that's an exception).

Actually, I'm thinking of going back to SWG. Somehow I keep returning to it, I don't know why, I suppose the positive side of the crafting system and the economy overpower the negative sides of the leveling system.

Saw you mentioned Wurm Online above

I have to say I really am enjoying that one for crafting. And they are just releasing ships - which you have to make, of course, like everything else on wurm.

I dont think there is enough crafting out in the MMO worlds - pretty sure there is a bit of a market for someone to work on if they were brave enough.

    Sound and Music for anything

SWG def had the best crafting system (crafting, survey, resources) ever, before they dumbed it down significally with the NGE. It is today nothing but a shadow of its former glory. Despite the NGE changes I dare agree the crafting system still is the most rich and complex ever seen in a mmorpg. It was that good originally.

If you are looking for a crafting system like SWG - why don't you just play SWG? It remains the best crafting system in any game ever.

And it's a virtual Star Wars world - whats not to like?

Forget the past. Just play it.

Bloodfin and Bria are doing surprisingly well population wise (as are some Euro servers)

If you have done SWG's crafting before the NGE which im sure the OP has, he will have no desire to go back to it.

Once you have had Pre-NGE anything, its impossible to go back, unless you are a completely dire hard Star Wars fan.

WAR does, surprisingly, have a system like you mentioned. However, there's no armourer or weaponsmith professions or that like. There're only about three on the line, at the moment, but they mentioned considering adding more in later updates. I personally think it's brilliant that they didn't even ADVERTISE their crafting system as interesting, whilst it is.

For example, with potions, you can use various ingredients to increase the length of the potion whilst diluting it's power in certain things, or increase it's power whilst radically decreasing its length. He, unfortunately, didn't go into a terrible amount of detail.

If you are like me addicted to crafting MMORPG

    ATITD 4 ( A Tale In The Desert 4)

Its only about crafting .. no fighting at all .. evrything you see in the game was crafted by player , you level with tests

This IS THE only real crafting MMORPG .. no limit as what you can or cant do

ex: you need bricks ? you will have to gather grass ..let it dry on the floor (if you havnt made a drying rack) then mix it with mud and sand .. (that you have to gather arround) then build a brick rack ..(for it you will need to gather wood , slates etc) its infinite..

so for those who are really into crafting mmorpg it worth take a look and try the 10days demo

oh ..and its in egypt .. 1/2 the real distance ..dont even think about crossing the map as it will take several real time days lol

and the best is that there is no 'zoning', all in one big world !

you get yours skills at Universities (if players of your region have unlock them with mats)

    Have fun !

I know this thread sort of aged ... but also, if you guys haven't tried "Fallen Earth" you should.

It has a very engrossing, involved, and deep crafting system.   Lots of farming (without feeling like your farming), 1000s of items to be crafted, involves subsystems, and you are allowed to queue things to be crafted while you are offline.

Aside from the fact that its the first MMO I've played in years (and I've played em all) that actually has me addicted and thinking about it all the time even when I'm not playing, it has a very mature and friendly community.

Its not your Daddy's MMO ... you have to learn to play this game (which I like).

Also the world is huge!!!  Constant exploring, constantly finding new places and "stuff".

They are very liberal with the inventory storage on your character, in your vaults (three personal vaults plus a guild vault) and you mounts and vehicles have storage.

Also, for those that appreciate it (like me) it has some of the best writing I've seen in an MMO ever.

Its PvE and PvP ... but you never, ever, have to PvP if you don't want to.

Its a one-world server (that is placed in Apocolyptic Arizona) with ZERO instancing ... none!

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of this game ... and I've played UO, Acheron's Call, DAoC, Horizons, CoH, WoW, EQ2, LoTRO, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Star Trek Online ... Fallen Earth is the first since DAoC to hook me, line and sinker.

Come join us, and research and build your own ATV, Motorcycle, or Car, your own armor, food, and weapons ... from the sub-systems up.   :)

As I write this, they are offereing a 10 day free trial, and a conversion to a full time subscription for $20 for the client (which includes 30 free days ... that gets added on to your trial time you haven't used yet).   $15 a month subscription rate.

NOTE: This is probably the best game I've seen that is casual player friendly, and both solo'ers and raiders alike feel at home together, and don't feel like they are stepping on each other.
