*  You could meet up with real english-speaking GMs in-game.  And they could solve your problems?

*  You could go to the dedicated Chat window from the Log-in screen where there were dedicated moderators, GMs, and CRs available 24/7.  And, they could take care of issues for you.  Such as giving you a 'World-Kick' if you were stuck in the geometry somewhere?

*  Griefers and Abusive people were dealt with quickly and harshly.  Mainly because a GM was there to look at the logs and witness the bad behaviours?

*  A new piece of Leg Armor with +1 Wisdom on it was really, really, something special.

*  I remember getting my first Fine Steel (no bonuses) 9 dmg Mace for my young Druid.  It was a very nice gift from a passing high(er) level.  Worth about 2 or 3 Platinum (which was a LOT back in the day).

*  I remember how excited I was to discover I could gather Berries for my (ever hungry) Hafling Druid and would only have to BUY milk.  Allowing me to save those precious Coppers to buy my Spells.

I miss those good times.

When the world was new.

And a Druid's ability to Port was an important part of the game.

How many times did I gather up my Group's Copper and Silver, Port to Rivervale, ATM at the Bank, then Port back to my pre-set Bind point at the Camp.  Bringing back the converted, and now much lighter, consolidated coin (coin weighd a LOT then).

Good Times.

It is amazing how some harsh reality balanced by good customer service can make a game fun.

I thought mages did the port, the druid was SOW?

    Or am I wrong?

Everquest is my second 3D mmorpg that I have played and enjoyed the most (the first was meridian 59 and I didn't like it too much) and all previous mmos are 2D (UO, The Realm, etc.) My first character in Everquest was a halfling warrior from Rivervale named Swordhand, he dual wields two minotaur axe and is claded in full banded armor. Back then (in 1999) a full set of banded armor is hawt stuff and minotaur axe is probably one of the most popular weapons next to fine steel weapons. So at level 20 I feel buff enough to leave Misty Thicket and wander around Nektulos forest (back then Nektulos is a safe "teen" zone and isn't infested with high level undead yet)  and stumbled into to the massive western commonlands where I first met a dark elf player and a werewolf npc (which was promptly killed by the freeport guards manning the checkpoint).  While minding my own business and enjoying the scenery something attacked my character from behind and in a few seconds it took, I saw the dreaded "You have died. LOADING... Please wait ..." Reading the logs, I saw "You have been killed by a griffon." I quickly ran back to the commonlands while butt naked and yelled "Has anyone seen my corpse?"

Nerely there :), Druids could sow and port, they ported to the stone henge  looking things. Your thinking of Wizzard who ported to the spires.

Both druids and wizards can cast teleport spells. Druids port to druid rings while Wizard teleports to spires. The druids (and shaman) can cast Spirit of Wolf (SoW) spells.

I remember standing in the tunnel in East Commonlands to sell my wares.   Stuff like patchwork armor, ya know the high sellers for your lowbies.

When people would "sell" castings of SOW for 1-3p.

Camping Raster, oh wait I think a monk is still camping him now...

Using Research skill to make and then sell off wizard spells, on my necromancer.

    <sniff> memories...

    I find your post interesting.

I am not that confused yet and could have correct you as the other poster did, hehe...and he uses the correct term, wizard...not mages...mages have pets and cast CoH.

But, why I find your post interesting is not to correct you, or anyone.  It is because it display that we are forgetting and we realize we are.

EverQuest is fading, progressively, into oblivion, for all of us...and it seems to all affect us, in a nostalgic ways.  I am not as far as you are on the path of oblivion and forgetfulness, but I am advanced enought to not understand more than half of what the devs were talking about. :P

Goodbye EQ...eventually I will recall you as much as I currently recall my grade 6 class...can't name anyone but 2 or 3 persons anymore, from Grade 6...I doubt I would be able to recognize more than 20-30 peoples now  in EQ...considering I did know most of the players on the server back than...(A PUG-lover gets to group a lot of peoples hehehe).

I remember that dying had real consequences, including losing 6+ hours of experience, realistically having to travel back to your corpse to loot it, and possibly even losing your corpse and all the items it held.

I remember mobs having multiple spawn locations and wide pathing, agroing nearby players when trained near them instead of automatically returning to their spawn spot, so they were not predictable and they appeared to be intelligent and aware of their surroundings.

I remember quests actually requiring that the player listen to what the NPC said and think about an intelligent reply in order to unlock additional information to solve the quest, since the quests used a key word response system. Quests in classic EQ often required world knowledge, exploration, and deductive reasoning to solve, like a real quest should.

What all this translated to was a sense of realism and immersion like no other game. It was a dangerous world and you had to be alert and careful. You couldn't just go afk and feel safe because mobs were not stupid and stagnate. You actually had to think about tactics, explore intelligently, and problem solve.

Whatever happend to intelligent MMOG design? Why are modern MMOGs designed for the stupid and lazy?

I hope that another game will make us feel like EQ. The experience of first days, months, years, playing EQ was the awesome that I have had in my life.

When SOW was very important, and portals and you really need people to help you to go other cities, and you really felt scary about dying.

Desperately looking for another real game like EQ.

    I remember lockjaw

I remember looking for bandit groups in WK

I remember the first time i got payback on Dorn B'Dinn

i could name as much as everyone else in this thread that i loved the orig EQ.  I honestly dont think anything will top that experience.  For the time being i've given up on MMOs because every single one has been a letdown.

    And that blows =(

    Highold Keep was camped 24/7

Finishing the Stein of Moguk quest was a huge sense of accomplishment.

Getting a Yak was like having an epic weapon.

South Karana was an up and coming Druids paradise.

When you finally were able to take Hill Giants in Rathe Mts was like having access to unlimited funds.

Camping wisps for hours in hopes of filling the packs with Greater Lightstones.

The dang werewolf that would spawn in West Commons when you were medding.

I have succumbed to Pain and Suffering a few times.  Thanks for the reminder.

  • VirgoThreeVirgoThree Member UncommonPosts: 1,198

Although you have to wonder....Pain and Suffering must of had horrible eye sight to miss a unconscious body! Unless we somehow flop around like fish with out knowing it lol.

Oh and your welcome for the reminder

  • majochmajoch Member Posts: 599

Heheh I was such a noob that I asked around  " who was Pain and Suffering  as it just killed me and I didn't even see it ".  Got a few chuckles on that one.

The awe inspiring beautifuly of Halas and permafrost. The grinding the spider silks for enough copper for a shield.. Jumping down the well in Befallen at level 10 dying, only to find you body once again when you're 16 (and have all new gear)..

    1. My first piece of crafted(warrior only) armor.. Evil eye nerves!

    2. My first in game friend Korur..

    3. My old guild.. it was fun

Camping the derv camps in NRO, collecting the dervish cutthroat rings and selling them in felwithe for 2-3p each.

Getting splattered by the Sand Giants...

Not reading a patch note and then running through a (unknow to me) new Kith ... at night.

Getting a great feeling of satisfaction and relief when my SK finally got his FBSS.

    Camping the sirens in OoT.

Chilling on the newbie log in Nektulos.

Realizing that my Troll bst's croc would never get big....at all.....

You guys are making me want to cry.

    Here is somemore:

-Making my first character, a Barbarian Warrior and promply putting 3 corpses in the lake trying to learn how to swim. Then this magical thing called a raft showed up.

Everfrost was amazing the first time out the tunnel. At level 7 my buddy ran me over a full set of Bronze Armor and a Langesax of Wolves. I was so pimp. I later tried to equip full bronze on a Half Elf, he couldnt move.

Then since my buddies were all based out of Freeport i got to do the best thing early EQ offered: The Naked Barbarian Run to Freeport!

    - Running by Inn3 in commons and there are dead bodies everywhere. I think, "Hmm, what happened here?. Then i think "Hmm, what is that flapping noize???" Loading please wait........

What sadistic bastard puts a level 30 Griffon in a level 10 zone???

    - SPECS TO THE DOCKS!!  or SG TO DOCKS!!!

I never did understand why you pulled those guys to the area that all the teens sat at to heal up.

    -Dorn, just freaking DORN.

-GBS the first time i killed the necro outside Surefall. I wasnt even camping her, just ran by ruins and she was standing there. I was jumping around like an idiot, the wife was much impressed.

-Hmm, im a Druid, im 2 levels higher then Grimfeather and i have sow on, this should be an easy kill. Loading please wait...........

-Blackborrow trains were a thing of beauty.

-ported into Dreadlands for the first time. So beautiful. Found the tunnel, soo scary. Ran out the other side and Gore was stading right there. I almost soiled myself.

So many more, could go on for hours.

    I miss those days.

  • DrowNobleDrowNoble Member UncommonPosts: 1,297

    Hmm let's see....

Taking my bard once he got the water-breathing song (gah what's the name) and diving into the water at freeport.  Auto running into an underwater corner and then going to bed.  Get up, swimming at max.

Iksar warriors and SK's unhappy cuz they can't wear plate.  Unable to wear darkforge or crafted I see many wearing banded armor into their late 20's.  Official reason why is "it chaffes their scales".

Setting up my "train to zone" hotkey... used frequently in Crushbone.

I played on Vallon Zek (Team-PvP) so some are PVP related.

    - Successfully making my Trueshot longbow on my 12th attempt using my last components that had taken me days to gather.

    - Exploring Velious

    - First Nagafen raid that turned into a 4-8hr corpse run.  First successful Nagafen raid.

    - Completing Epic swords on my ranger (1.0)

    - Huge guild on guild PVP matches for zone control in places like Fear, Kael Drakkel, Hate, etc.  One tactic was to use Druid group wolf form to change the entire raid to wolf form to confuse the opposing guilds...

    - Killing Vulak on the progression server.

  • safwdsafwd Member Posts: 879

Shoal, did you play EQ as Shoal? If so what server did you play on?

I knew a Mage named Shoal on Bristlebane.

  • EverSkellyEverSkelly Member UncommonPosts: 341

i remember EXPLORING new zones. Sense of danger everywhere. You never know what will hit you and when.

I remember nearly 20,000 items on sale in bazaar on prime time.

People looking for group in oasis, killing crocodiles... oh and desert madmans :)

I also remember EQ for  "kiting". Never saw such a good kiting system in any other mmorpg. Druids and necros were gods. Handling several mobs at once.

Trains in Estate of Unrest and Paludal Caverns.

    Twinking alts

The sound that Scarabs make  :D

You could probably find all this in today's EQ as well, but these are the things i remember...
