I tried EVE online the other night and have come to the conclusion space just isn't my thing. Are there any MMO's that take place on the ground that's as complex as EVE?
Dungeons and Dragons is not a sandbox mmorpg like EVE-Online.
I am afraid there is not much out there that is as complex as EVE with a sandbox style ( sandbox means, you choose what you do, with alot of freedom ).
Ultima Online is one of the few other sandbox games, altho it doesnt have as good PvP. PvP there was never structured enough, and they even made a mirror land where you cant PvP at all, that wasnt really the right solution.
I think Jumpgate has some cool stuff, but that is space as well
Ryzom is a nice sandbox game, altho there are no player made structures, and atm I dont think you can subscribe ( they going thru another round of bankrupcy due to bad marketing and organisation, cause the game in itself is pretty good ), you can try the free trial tho.
SWG was the most revolutionary 3D mmorpg, that was not in space, but got WoWified and buried, so no luck there.
Vanguard didnt make it.
I am afraid, that if you want a complex and polished sandbox game, the only choice currently is EVE-Online.

Well, another sandbox game is Entropia Universe, but I don't really like the system where you buy items with real life cash and stuff.
On the other hand, they are making a major graphics update ( using the crysis engine ), so I am sure that game is doing pretty well.
Plus you could say you only invest like 15 a month in the game, similar like subscription based games.
And lastly, you could even make a profit ( but don't count on it )

I wanted to add that EVE-Online is busy with Project Ambulation, where you have a real avatar that can walk and do stuff on stations.
Maybe eventually, some day, you may be able to walk on the planets and have groundgame like SWG ( a person can dream can't he? )

You could always give PoTBS a try. I would wait for an trail though as it is simply not everyones game. It is not as complex as EvE though.
Wurm online is also an complex game, However it doesnt have a lot of players. You might wanna give both a look. Not sure what type of elements from EvE your intested in.
EVE is interesting. It couldn't keep me subscribed, but I check on its progress every now and then. Asherons Call was sandboxy. Its still going, but its ancient.
I can not understand this shift to linear story-based game play in MMORPGs. Thats exactly what MMORPGs are NOT supposed to be.
well runescape is very good, in terms of things being added, population, the fact its sandbox, almost entirely based on crafting and the fact that the most lucrative thing you can do is play the market, or pvp, unfortunately graphics are aweful, and the game is packed full of 10 year olds, if they could only remak the game as a downlaodable client im sure subscriptions would sky rocket

I've never played it, but I've heard dungeons and dragons online is pretty complex (aside from the combat).

Runescape is probably the most evolved MMORPG around lol. It's not even a joke, you can even have your own farm in that game lol.
If it wasn't for the graphics, I would be playing that game none stop
