MMORPGs and Chick Butt

Hmmm..... Am I dumb enough to actually start this discussion thread....  Aww.... What the heck!  Here goes nothing:

I play a female character in MMORPGs.  On a number of occasions, this had led others to question my sexuality.  So, I just wanted to take a moment to set the record straight on a couple of things:

1.  I never roleplay female while I am playing a female character.  I may roleplay my race and class, but you will never have a doubt that I am a male character.

2.  MMORPGs commonly are designed to play in a 3rd person view.  While you can select others views, commonly they are designed to be most efficient in 3rd person view.

3.  3rd Person views mean you are most often looking at the character from the behind perspective.

4.  I, like most players, tend to play for several hours at a time.

5.  Bringing these thoughts together, this means that I get to spend many hours at a computer screen staring at chick butt, while other players, who question my sexuality and choices, spend hours at a time staring at man butt.

So, from my perspective:  Chick Butt = Good, Man Butt = Bad

'Nuff said.

Lineage 2 is the impatemy (sp) of this

I play both a girl and a guy in rpgs and mmorpgs....no real reason..I just do.

However, I did get sick and tired of seeing my dark elf's ass jiggling around whenever she ran.  You could tell so badly that the game was geared for younger "horney adolscent males".  The armor design made no sense, etc.

I dont play to see a heiney.  I just play different sexes for the fun of it...nothing else.

Hrm....You started this thread.....Are you sure your not as well questioning your own sexuality? Hrmm......

Anyhow, I dont like to play female characters for the whole fact, I have a sense of roleplaying to my character. And being a chick is friggin creepy.

And well, playing a large breasted pretty elvish chick, and trying to be a fearsome foe....Well....Ya know, just doesnt have that fear factor. That, and it wouldnt fit with my usual case of names.

I play both male and female.  Female probably 60-70% of the time just because I think that heroines are alot cooler than heros which are a dime a dozen.  I'm all about roleplaying though and if you're playing a female, you shouldn't do anything in game that makes it appear that the character is not female by the way you speak, act, or whatever.  I usually send people a /tell or /whisper letting them know I am not female, but as far as public channels, I play the part.

That and it's a lot less risky to run around in panties in an MMORPG rather than around the house in my wives image

I've only actively played one female character past a certain point...ya know, the dedicated to the character point...and there are 2 resons for me doing so:

    1. The character is a rogue...so to be sneaky, I chose a gnome because they're so small. From an RP perspective, it makes sense...no halflings for me.

    2. Because of point 1...have you ever SEEN the gnome males? They're not roguish at all! and they're ugly...and bald...and it doesn't fit the character. That, and females are sneakier than males.

Other than that, all of my characters have been male, or not lasted long enough for me to save them. I don't play pure casters other than my druid, so I've never had to worry about guys in dresses (robes). That, and my girlfriend played for quite some time...and it would be very strange to be out of character as a female talking to my girlfriend...not to mention it creeped her out.

I don't have an issue with guys playing girls, for the most part, as long as they ADMIT to being a guy...otherwise it's just plain wrong.

AHH! Run away from the monster! He's going to eat us!

OK.  That's just creepy, man... image hehe.

On the subject of which, I guess it's not so much that I am in favor of watching the chick butt, but more that once someone borught to my attention that I was staring at man butt for hours at a time, it started to creep me out.

I tend to play characters of both sexes too, just for the fun. My favorites in Shadowbane was my Fury and my male channeler and ranger.

I have to agree with you about the characters in Linage 2. They are definately aimed for young males. A shame that such a pretty game has so poor support and gameplay. I stopped playing after two months - The grind and farming takes the fun out of this game.

I try not to stare at the butt, there's other things to stare at, like the enviorment... But if you think staring at pixelated "chick butt" is good, go right ahead. image. You do have an interesting point tho, lol

And as a side note, I play males because I like to imagine myself in the game, becoming a female sorta makes it feel creepy.

Pixalated? Turn up your screen resolution ::::35::

I usually play a female characters in MMORPGs. I don't try to act like a chick or anything and if people ask me if I'm male or female I'll be honest..

Also, if I do roleplay, my character's a Lesbian ::::02::

    How's animated sound?

Its sorta funny, female characters make better beggers. I usually get freaked tho, I dunno if the person on the other end is a girl, or a 40 year old bald man livining in his parents basement. image

This is exactly why there will never be a MMORPG based on the Mario Brothers games.

Here's my take on it.  When I start a new mmorpg (ones that allow you more than one character per server) I start as a female character and play the dumb noob and say "oh that's so expensive, oh my equipment sucks". Well in every mmorpg I have played there is always some guy who lives in his parents basement who has never had sex and only plays mmorpgs.  Well this guy comes up and offers armor, weapons, money, etc. etc.  When I have all this, I make my main character, transfer stuff to him, and delete the chick and the poor guys fantasy of having a loving relationship lol.

I play both males and females.  Nowadays almost exclusively males since my fiance plays with me so we end up playing a couple a lot.  Back in the early EQ days, I played a male up to 35.  I started getting frustrated with him (anyone remember the wizard issues when EQ was first out?), and rolled a female wood elf (ya know, them cute little hotties!).  HOly Crackers and Cheese!  I couldn't believe how much stuff was just outright given to me by people! lol  I was fully outfitted and had a fair amount of cash in the bank before I had even gained a level!

Similar to what you mentioned dekron, I thought ahh, its all clear now!  So I milked it a bit.  Lots of "teeheehees" and "giggle" and :) :) :) :)

I play both, and it's never a question of the butts really. It simply comes down to when I'm creating the character what I feel it should be. I guess it goes back to my old D&D days, when I start a character I have a mental image of it, what it'll be, background story, etc. Sometimes it's male, sometimes female. All depends on my mental image of the character.

I still get creeped out, but in some regards it could be fine.... I'd never wanna see a male amazon, that in itself is a nightmare...

Im glad i dont have the same perspective and view on things like you do. I play a male character because i think there cool. Some guy said he played females because he thought heroines were cool and that is fine by me and a good reason for playing one. But picking a characters sex just because you look at them for ''X'' hours and want to see a female ass instead of a male ass is just disgusting and pathetic and umm... HELLO its not like your character is real its a freakin 3d polygon ...sheesh pervs , you should stick to FPS games , i dont even see why you bother to play a character if you dont wanna see its new cool looking equipment and what not on it. imageimagethe guy that started this topic is a sickie lol.

Admit it, most of you just play women characters so you leech off desperate guys.

This is by far the most entertaining post I have read in a while...::::01:: I too don't play female characters as a rule...it just no comfortable for me I guess. Had a friend that role played a Dark elf priest I think it was and alway got into big groups on EQ. He said it was hilarious when it finally came out he was a guy...a couple of guys got mad...they really though he was a gril playing a girl and were attracted to him...that would just wierd me out..hehe ::::18::

I play both sexes. It's not about staring at my characters backside, although, I guess he has a point. It's simply a matter of what fits the character in my head, much like Kunou said. My character in SWG was female. she looked a good bit like Aurra Sing at first, and then once they added the new ID changes, she looked dead on like Aurra, and she was played as a tough smuggler/bounty hunter/assassin type would be played. Cold, only cared about herself, etc.

Also, playing a female character has been something of a learning experience, as well. some of the things people have said to me have just blown my mind. I've seen and heard some seriously disturbing stuff from people, up to emoting rape on a female character after incapping her in SWG. This character, however, was actually played by a female, who was pretty upset over it. Then, of course, were the people who felt that the event was totally acceptable, and defended his actions on the forums. I definitely understand something of what most female gamers go through from my time spent as a female character, and I see why so many of them choose to play as male characters to avoid being constantly harrassed.

I was never what you wanted, I could never never please.
I swallowed all our sorrow in the midst of my disease.
All my fortunes, all my gains, all the battles I have won...
Now collapsing like the rain, I stand alone, your only son...

Take some solace in these words, take notice of this place.
Hollow whispers that they are, like the wind upon my face.
Sing softly in my ear and look at me with wonder.
I will try to ease your fear as the darkness pulls you under.

I guess it's alright but being female I usually am assumed to be male because so many use the female avatars to get free items, etc... whatever the excuse is :P

And you play these games to stare at some pixel butt? Wow... heh.

Edit: Also, you hit the nail on the head, buddy... at least I haven't experienced anything like that, thank goodness.

OK, feeling the need to weigh in again.

I appreciate the variety of the responses and the honesty of the responses to this thread as well.

It appears that there are many reasons for going with a character of the opposite sex, with a wide range of accompanying ethics.

I'm too independant to accept gifts and other goodies that others want to offer.  Actually, I guess I never received any of this stuff because as soon as someone starts teaming with me, trying to find a "special friend," I make my true self very clear, very quickly.  Then, generally, there is a good chuckle involved or I end go find another team.

For me, there really is no 'turn-on' factor to the pixelated butt (although, I have to agree with the comments about Lineage catering to that crowd - the Dark elves adventure in armor that ends up looking like S&M gear).  I just find the pixelated butt of the females to be less irritating to have to look around over the long term.

And, in games where you don't have 3rd person view as your primary (Eve, for example), I have never played the opposite sex.

I think that any reason for playing any variety of character is well and good, as long as your motivations.

So, thanks for all the great comments!
