AoC and Casual Gamers

I've been following AoC for a while now but I'm curious if this game will be suitable for a casual gamer?  I understand theres a lot of soloing capability, and although it's not forced, grouping is beneficial. 

Also, I was hardcore PvP'er when I played SWG but it's been a while since I've played an MMO and I think AoC will make me return.  Am I gonna have to rely on sieges or raids to make me fair competition in PvP or will I be able to buy my equipment without investing hours of time with sieges/raids?

    for the most part, crafted gear will be best for pvp. But there will be nothing like the seige battles. They are already starting to test them with over 300 people.

    I don't think enough is known about sieges to really answer your questions.

    It's a hard question to answer before release. There's also a question of definitions. What is a casual and what is a hardcore gamer?

    I've heard Funcom describing it as a casual friendly game, but we'll just have to see as I've heard of several hardcore gamer features lately.

    Wasn't there a comment in that video of the community visit at Funcom that the game will try to cater to people that have 10+something hours a week to actually play AoC? 1-2 hours/day in 7 days sounds quite casual to me :)

    Without knowing anything about the matter but by looking at all other MMORPGs released after WoW the probability that AoC will be casual friendly is very high.

    I wouldn't call playing 2 hours a day casual, I'd put that at about normal. I would say a casual gamer is one that doesn't necessarily even play every day.

    Ya, as a casual gamer, I'd play about 2-3 weekdays for about an hour but much more on weekends.

    A statement was released a day ago or so, saying that raiding(24 man) WILL be a major part in endgame(sound familiar?) so my guess is raiding gets you the best gear...which means lots of time raiding..which means i wont be playing....

    Well i realy hope that the game will be good for casual players... i playing WoW atm and im getting sick of Raiding...

    Serius i realy hate the fact that you will have to raid to get some decent gear and experiance the game content...

    So im keeping my fingers crossed X and hoping this will be the game i can change WoW with...

    Games are about choices and about what people make out of those choices.

    If you take the raiding out of the people, those who like that aspect won't have the choice. Those who don't like raiding, won't raid, regardless if the choice is in the game or not. So to strike the balance (an unknown factor unless we play the live game), raiding should be there for those that like but should not be an obligatory experience for those that don't.

    That was WoW's original (pre-expansion) mistake where people with raiding gear were dominating the PvP frontier. Right now raiding gear (in WoW) are pretty much useless for PvP (and the other way round), thus people don't have to and don't step into any raiding instances if they don't feel like it.

    So the game can have raiding for those that like this aspect and make it an optional activity for those that don't. More choices is generally a good thing.

    I'm more worried about their ability to balance those choices towards what they feel is their target audience. It's very hard to make a game that appeal both to casual and hardcore because their preferences are completely different.

    Argreed. The balancing is the problem.

    AoC has tier based raids. This probably a lot of fun for the raiders. They level up and start with tier 1 raid to work through the raod progression.

    EQ2 did the same with the RoK expansion. The problem is, either you run with the raid crowd from the start or you are locked out from this content. If you are slower because you cant commit enough time or if you commit one day to roleplaing friends you fall behind . If you  would like to raid once a week you are out. Even if you decide to join a raid guild you are out. They are all tier 2 or 3 and wont run you though the previous tiers.

    Thats why tier based raids scare me and why i think raid item progression is wrong. It should be a 24 people vs. mob and not 24 epics vs mob. I think i am a minority though and raiders love raid progression and i have to accept it :(

    Raiding gives PvE gear

    PvP gives you PvP gear

    Crafting makes versatile PvE and PvP gear because weapons have sockets and you can get gems from PvP and PvE, ones you get from each are not suited to the other.

    So in this game you can actually choose what you do instead of having to do everything to be the best in a certain area - naturally this has yet to be proven in game, hopefully they will stick to this.
