    If you continue to experience network lag even with things like Norton turned off, try adding the following to pirates_local.ini:

    forceTcpFallback=true

    (Do not edit pirates.ini.  If you don't have a pirates_local.ini file, create one using Notepad or your favorite text editor.)"

    Thanks a MILLION!!  I hope this fixes the problem because it put a damper on the entire evening as my friends and I tried to enjoy the game.   Regarding the graphics gliches, I suspected it was due to my uber video card since my other system didn't have the problem.  It wasn't a 'minor" gliche though; it was major.  The screen flickered 99% of the time, and often when i scrolled around, the texture would copy and I'd be looking at absolute junk on the screen.

    But even considering the problems,  we still played for four hours; so with these issues resolved it should be much more enjoyable.

    Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
    In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

    Ill try what you suggested as well Vince... I hope that solves the problem.

    I agree with you completely too... if this was in beta and just didn't get included with the release that is a MAJOR issue. I think they should have that patched immediately but maybe its up to the end user

    Seems to be a pretty big issue, even if only 10% of the folks are experiencing it. I am one of those 10% and it puts a HUGE damper on playing... given I can literally do absolutely nothing in any part of the ship.

    At least I know it is a known issue and something that can hopefully be fixed and quickly. Again Ill try what you suggested and let you know the result. I thank you very much for posting that! :)

    Cheers!

    BTW, after using this fix it seems that it was common to get an error after logging in stating something like "can't connect via UDP, falling back to TCP"...but just ignore it, as it doesn't seem to mean anything....and most importantly you can actually move your ship LOL!

    My internet speed is extremely high; and my rig is TOP of the line (EVGA motherboard, 8800GTX video card).  Frankly, if you are reading this the odds are high that my rig is better than yours.
    I can't see how anyone can objectively say the game is fine.  Graphics gliches alone were terrible on my rig; but my other rig (years older) didn't exhibit the graphic cliches.
    I don't really care if lots of folks on this thread say the game is problem-free.  Buy the game based on their advice, but don't say I didn't warn you.  I am utterly shocked ANYONE could say POBS is a polished game.  What planet are you on???
    I do intend to check it out tonight and hope their 1:30am patch fixed some of the problems.

    Well you said it right there, the nvidia 8800 cards have a known few problems within the game at the moment.  Those running on vista tend to have more problems.  Some of the issues deal with the latest Nvidia drivers.

    Edit: there is a posted fix for this as well I do not know the validity of it.  I'm just reposting something another user had fixed with.

    This can be fixed with falling back to TCP.

    See this thread and look at the router answers section:

    http://www.burningsea.com/forums/sho...ghlight=router

    Alternatively see answer #36 in their issues database.

    You may have to creates a pirates_local.ini file and fallback to TCP instead of UDP. The answers you seek are in the above threads.

    Perhaps true - but it is also true that the game is extremely inefficient.  It isn't that it looks bad but given the resources it consumes it should be looking like Crysis and not mostly looking like a 2006 game.  Static skies, no dynamic lighting or shadows, no HDR, almost no advanced modern graphical technolgies at work just old school graphics with the polygon counted upped.  PotBS looks good enough, it just struggles to get that look way more than it should.

    After implementing the workaround mentioned above, I had no lag problems.  More specifically, I created a text file in my POBS folder, and named the text file pirates_local.ini.  Inside the text file, I put the following two rows:

    [Network]

    forceTcpFallback=true

    Then I saved and closed it, then kicked off the launchpad.  The game worked fine, with no lag.  Also, perhaps coincidentally, the graphic problems I had last night did not occur this evening.  So, I actually had a fun night of shipping.

    Thanks all, have fun.

    For an uber computer and a fast internet connection it sounds like both are having issues. And Id bet my system is faster than yours, and I have had no problems at all. Netowork or otherwise. The only bug Ive ever even seen in 2 days of playing is a certain port has water flickering- the known issue. The game has played like butter for me, way way better than vanguard plays a year after its release. Comparing the two is silly.

    You know, telling people that it's "their computer" when it's a known bug, so known that the fix for it is in the POTBS knowlege base, is no way to win friends and influence people to like your game.  This is a VERY well known issue, it has affected a large portion of the population, and it was well known in beta and left unfixed.  So it's great that your experience is all buttery, but instead of telling people that are xperiencing problems they're wrong...why not try helping them.

    btw, by help I mean what I did...a non-player or fan...posting the fix for the issue.

    Been playing solid for a week now.

    My loading screen in and out of a mission has locked up once. I repeat once.

    Game runs pretty solid I think for a new release. We have about 15 guys in vent playing and noone has complained at all about bugs or issues..

    LOL...and again, telling people who are experiencing a documented bug that affects a lot of people...and by documented I mean by FLS on the official sight...doesn't really help.

    This is a real bug, it's a fairly widespread bug, it's why there's an answer for it in the knowlege base.  glad you don't have it...but a lot of people have.
