Noob Questions

I remember the old days of UO, and love the idea of sanbox-style games WITHOUT levels or grinding, ANd I played Starflight for the PC, so needless to say this game intrigued me.

Already though, I'm a little frustrated -- I lost track of where my guide went in the tutorial and couldn't get a proper camera angle to track her down.  Should I just roll up a new character?  Also, I didn't see ANYONE else around ...

A few questions:

1) Do you get a starship early on? Or serve on a vessel first?

2) How does PvP work? Is it like UO?  What about things like stealing and stealth?

3) Where do other players gather on the server usually?  Like, is there one planet or port that is more populated than others?

4) Are there large-scale space battles? Or is the PvP relegated to the avatars?

5) Can you play in short stints? Or do the missions and such require one to play in hour+ chunks of time?

6) What should I dump points into for a first character, just to get off the ground?

- I hope to get back on soon and give this another go.  It seems like the game has a lot of possibilities.  Thanks in advance for any reponses, help, and advice :)

When you're in the training simulation, you're "zoned", there is no one else around.  If you say "End Simulation" you'll be teleported to Earth and into the "real" game
    A few questions:
    1) Do you get a starship early on? Or serve on a vessel first?
You can have a ship as either a civilian or a fleet officer, as a civilian you have to come up with the cash to buy it.  As a fleet officer, you have to reach the rank of at least Commander to receive a ship command.  In either case, the best way to do it is to serve on a ship's crew first to learn the ropes.
    2) How does PvP work? Is it like UO?  What about things like stealing and stealth?
PVP is a lot like UO, pre Renaissance.  You can pick pockets from other players or NPCs.  Stealth in SQO is called "shrouding", and it is a psionic power.
    3) Where do other players gather on the server usually?  Like, is there one planet or port that is more populated than others?
The players are usually on their ships, hanging around the Terra spaceport in New Seattle, or the starship systems salesman in Geneva you'll usually run into someone.
    4) Are there large-scale space battles? Or is the PvP relegated to the avatars?
The biggest battle I've heard about involved around 6 PC ships versus 10-12 NPC ships.
    5) Can you play in short stints? Or do the missions and such require one to play in hour+ chunks of time?
It really depends on the mission you are on, early training missions are pretty quick, but space missions can involve a lot of travel time.  It's a big galaxy that they have modelled
    6) What should I dump points into for a first character, just to get off the ground?
If you're aiming for a ship command, tactical skills are the way to go, especially weapons operation and starship combat tactics

     Hope to see you 'round
