Will MMO's die due to lack of interface on the console?

MitaraMitara Member UncommonPosts: 755

Will the change from PC to Console's for MMO mean that all the guild stuff and communication between players will suffer, or will there be a new way to communicate? Will keyboards be sold for consoles?

There are already keyboards and headsets for consoles. Have been for years. Used to play Everquest Online Adventures on PS2 with a keyboard for typing. So I really don't see your point at all. And mmos sure as hell ain't gonna die from being on consoles, as they'll always be on PC as well.

Your absolutetly right about keyboards being availble to consoles, but they are not standard and the vast majority of players do not have one yet.

Consoles have a long way to go yet before they are used more often for MMO's. But saying that Consoles are coming more and more like cheap PC's.

MMO's DIE because of limitations with consoles?? I think you need to rethink the phrasing of that question...since when did MMO's ever care what consoles were or did?

MMO will indeed die on PC. But they will still be alive on consoles.

Imo, the next generation of Microsoft consoles will come bundled with a keyboard and wii-like remote instead of a mouse.

it's obvious to me that Microsoft is trying to separate "gaming" from "PC" and transfer it to consoles.

It's not for the current-gen because they are still improving graphical quality and Xboxlive, but for the next Xbox... i'm sure Microsoft will have a MMO ready only for its console.

Also, since the MMo market became all about money, think what Blizzard could have done on million-selling consoles...? Yep, more money.

    My addiction History:
    >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
    >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
    >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

Like any other genre, no MMO on a console is one that I will willingly experience. I would sooner switch to a Macintosh, or cease gaming altogether, than support this unfortunate trend.

Microsoft has a horrible history with mmos

MS sold AC back to Turbine, MS cancelled their own mmo Mythica

Erm...allot of the things they did and are tweaking in vista is pretty game-centric...like the DX10 thing...if they were moving things off the PC, then why would they be making such a big push for people to buy an OS?

Aside from that, keyboards/mice aren't standard for consoles and most console players don't have them...kinda...Pretty much every house with a console probably has a computer floating about that just so happens to have a keyboard and mouse and enterprising rascal may hijack. Otherwise they can buy a keyboard/mouse for cheap. It isn't rocketscience when it comes to consoles and mmos, there's some painfully easy and cheap ways to make it perfectly viable.

As for the mmo dying on either system, I doubt it. If anything the mmo concept will eventually be used to network all our systems together effectively into one friendly interface. Not really as a game, but as a  way to just get things smoothed over between phones, PDAs, consoles, PCs, TV, and any other fancy gadgetry that can be used over the net and requires an interface and quite likely will have data transfer between one or more of the prior stated systems. Wouldn't be a game, but would be very damn useful.

As far as games, somewhat same thing, the games will be made compatible with systems that are capable of similar things. As technology changes and shifts, the mmo won't die out on any singular system but instead change to encompass the new systems and drop off eventually the systems that just don't make money.

Consoles are good for people that only do gaming. I was going to buy a console just to play AoC on..

  • DrulisleDrulisle Member Posts: 15

You got that half right...consoles are only good for people who do twitch gaming. And there is a reason there are no MMOFPS's. Not because there wouldnt be a TON of money for someone who could create one, but because of limitations on server tech. Server lag is the number one complaint about traditional MMORPG's these days...especially pvp games. Until server tech catches up, all you fps fanboiz can stop your dreamin about a true twitch MMO...not gonna happen for many years. And if you dont believe me...just wait and see what happens to AoC and the screams that come from that game.

    I'm not a console fan

but theres been at least 3 console mmos over the last 5+ years

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQuest_Online_Adventures

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XI

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Online

never played any of them to comment tho

I have to say, I think i missed something here.  Right now there is maybe 4-5 console games available that are mmo's, and i'd assume FFXI is probably the only one that is rather successful.  So where is this change at, and why would PC's just fade away from gaming?  Computers are far easier to upgrade, customize, and build then a console, and I'm sure as a group of gamers, no one would doom themselves to being limited to using just a xbox or ps3.  No customizing = the death of the computer market.  I doubt anyone would do that.

There are true twitch mmo's, planetside for example, and during the time I played it played smooth enough.

The main reason imho why Planetside never got that popular is because the rpg part was lacking ( only few ranks, too easy to get max rank ).

I have done large scale battles in Planetside, and it worked.

    So get your facts straight.

To me the ultimate mmorpg will combine SWG pre cu/nge with a twitch based system like Planetside and the quest content and polish of WoW. And perhaps more depth and PvP ala EvE Online.
