You all know me Lobotomist. Harbinger of doom and gloom.
Truth is - I am passionate gamer. MMO gamer. And i am unforgiving for degradation of quality in games. Degradation brought by corporate and marketing bloodsucking.
I say Funcom , you have a problem. Share with us. Be honest and gamers will be honest to you.
Today i watched this video

Gaute Goadger is so passionate about the game. He truly completely believes in it.
Call me crazy , but this is enough to bring me back on the tracks.
Bit honesty

Not to mention that it's Funcom. With their reputation for quality, what could go wrong??
*cough* Anarchy Online *cough*
Exactly, only somehow I don't think you meant that as the compliment it really is.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

It was not a compliment.
I was there at AO's launch.
And have played several times over the years.
AO just never really recovered from the disaster of its launch.
If AoC has a similar launch . . .
And that is the real worry.
Anarchy will never live down the reputation of its launch, that is true. By my comment, I meant the degree to which Funcom was able to recover from said launch in terms of the game itself, in spite of the lost interest by the community at large.

Maybe they are trying so hard to avoid another bad release with the delay(s)? Personally, I prefer waiting a bit longer if it means getting a better result.
It is quite simple. Funcom probably has put more or less all its assets and investment into this single game. It is the maker or breaker for them and they cannot afford to have this project fail. Nowadays you have to invest millions into the development of a triple-A game and if it does not pay off you have to be a very big and healthy company with very gracious investors to gulp down the loss without getting a death blow from it. My personal opinion is that either AoC is going to be Funcoms best game or it's going to be their last game. So they better be very enthusiastic about AoC

I agree with Jupp. Well said.
It wouldn't be fair to hang the whole of Anarchy Online's woes on Mr. Godager. IIRC, the project lead for the bulk of AO's development was Ragnar Tornquist. (Yeah, The Longest Journey and its sequel are brilliant pieces of work, but they ain't MMO's.) All the same, Godager was the technical director before he replaced Tornquist, so he's far from blameless. I wouldn't expect AoC to have anything remotely like the problems AO had, the fact that the company weathered that misery implies they are smart enough to learn from their mistakes. All the same, the game was long on promise and short on delivery. (Anyone remember the '5 year evolving storyline'?) I'm hoping they don't repeat that mistake; AoC has made allot of claims regarding innovation, I hope they pull it off.
As for the video, where did Midgard figure in this equation? Back in 2001 or 2002, Funcom announced development of this viking themed MMO. I remember seeing concept art a bit of commentary. The next thing I heard was the Conan announcement. I just assumed that the former morphed into the latter when they acquired the Conan IP. (not that it matters at all)
Off Camera, Gaute and all the developers and community guys at Funcom are so enthusiastic and proud to be working there and on AoC. This shows on every floor of their building in all area's. Walking around these guys are pumped to get this game out and show everyone why they think its special.
They are all down-to-earth guys and girls who are happy to be working on this special project, they are excited for everyone to see what they have nearly accomplished - honestly.
From what I saw and knew already it has the making to be really different - in a good way.
Its not blind faith either:
They said come to Oslo visit us, no NDA, paid for all expenses for Press from all over and said come in, come and have a look what we are doing. We are proud for you to see this and hope that upon completion people will feel the same as we do right now.
Jon Wood, editor here was there too, he saw the enthusiam and the product itself was nearly done and looking really good!
Sorry -aehm- Lobo-san -aehm- you mean -aehm- this in an -aehm- ironic way -aehm- -aehm- ??
Seriously, I was quite unable to really listen to this. I mean, I had quite enough of Paul Barnett's flamboyant elogies, but maybe they should let someone explain this who has a wee bit more charisma and doesn't speak like he had taken a package valiums, ja ne?
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Perhaps that is a diference right there.
Paul is entertainer ... I am not surprised he is director with all his charisma. This is why they put him in front spot.
Gaute sounds like on valium , not really charismatic at all. But he is director because of his game designing skills. I rather have him speak from hearth, than bring some clown to try to emulate Paul Barnnets stunts
Wish there was another vid showing the next part of that meeting. Sounded like it would be interesting.
Why operate on belief? These things get released. You don't need faith.
Patience is virtue and appearances are decieving. Competent looking people are often the real schisters and some dishevled geek often has a far greater ethic of quality than you could ever realize until you see his work.
... me too... want to see more.

Gonna be further friday updates, there was about 2 hrs total Q&A.
There is definately more coming!
