SWORD OF THE NEW WORLD!
About 3 weeks ago I started this game, and it seemed great, but once again another korean game down the drain...
This game was great for the few weeks, I paid $140 for item mail items, and then the last patch they make 3-4 of the follwoing changes...
#1 No automatic attack like it used to be, I can understand this for some terms of the game.
#2 No automatic healing
#3 Costumes can no longer be chosen at the start of a new character, which really pisses me off.
#4 Lots of bots running around nothing done.
#5 The item shop when I joined didnt give others unfair advantages over other players who did not pay a dime, however now since the last patch, anyone who is rich can kick anyones ass with the items they have in the item shop...
So just a warning to anyone who wants to try this once great game, do not play it, its a waste of money, if you play, and a waste of time, I am seriously speaking...
Koreans make great games, but destroy them in the end, as usual, Im going back to world of warcraft, call me gay if you like, but world of warcraft has never had any issues with nerfing, or anything, or changes, everything is really discussed/talked about, and any changes that are made in this game are not that bad compared to what koreans do...
Korean games are rumored to be working along with gold sellers to leech U.S Money, although they use the FREE to play term as a cover up, it is truely free to play, however they on purposely make it hard to get around in some of their games without using the item mail which makes it a lot easier...
Comments
You payed $140 in 3 weeks for items that gave you no significant advantage over anyone... in a free game?
Um....
HAAHAHAHAHAHA $140
Lol doesnt sound so free to me
And yes its true, buying in their cash shops make the game easier, but they are always careful to keep it on daggers edge, it makes it just easy enough that it almost seems worth it, but nothing so great that it ruins the game or makes the game unplayable w/o cash shop items.....$140 OUCH
OP deserves the satisfaction to know that his $140 payment has helped 20 less fortunate children somewhere in this world play this game, who otherwise wouldn't be able to without his financial support. Amen.
It's a pity they made such poor decisions. It was quite a good game and it could be something REALLY good with some tweaks here and there. It's surprising that they change such core gameplay aspects at this time in the game's lifecycle. I could understand such a change made in beta, but the game has been out for over half a year now, and even longer in korea.
but seriously man, 140$!? in 3 weeks!?
But to give you a bit advice: Try www.ragnarokonline.com
It's made by the same designer as Sword of the New World, but they never introduced such a hell patch.
HAR, OP spent more dough on the useless cash shop items than I did buying ISK (120.00) in EVE over the last 6 months.
And the ISK certainly made my game playing experience more pleasant.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!
"I paid $140 for item mail items"
It is comments like that why I stay away from so called F2P games. Now, before we all jump on the pulpit and berate this guy for spending what some may consider an excessive amount of money ..understand that most MMORPG players spend MORE in monthly subscription fees. At close to $15/month that really is only about 9 months of WoW. How many of us have played more than 9 months of WoW. I best most.
However, F2P MMORPGs and their Item malls can be very deceptive and you end up spending a LOT more than you expected to (Course, thats how all Malls, virtual or RL, work). Buyer beware. At least with P2P games, I can budget and anticipate the costs.

Man....who spends $140 buck in 3 weeks on an MMO? That's worse than a friend of mine who got a bill for a $16 grill cheese at a fancy restaraunt.
I hope they sent u a jar of vaseline with your order to help sooth the pain.
Im just going to sit here and wait for Candygirl to come over and tell you how EVIL item malls are.
Oh wait, this isnt an SOE game is it.
Actually, he should use a water-based lubricant. Vaseline is oil-based.
140$$ on the item mail, that coulda got u alot of piss instead
140 bucks, impressive.
Well chalk it up to "leasons learned"
Post some screenies of what you bought for 140 dollars....I gotta see.
$140. That's insane. That's more than nine months subscription to most MMOs. No wonder so many publishers want to try this micro transaction and item mall thing. They hit the jackpot with people like you.
To echo the other persons comments; 140?! If you were intending to discourage this type of gameplay sorry to tell you your dollar votes have told the company quite the opposite. Don't play games with item malls if you don't want more & more of them to come out.
No more auto attack/auto healing? sounds like they are finally fixing the game to me.
It could have been a game that takes more skill than all the other crappy auto-everything mmorpg, but they opted to make it even more automated when they first started. Might be too late though, hopefully developers learn from this though; the market is not entirely full of WoW newbs who need everything automated for them.
I don't think that's a big deal at all. You are right, it has to be put into perspective.
I mean, seriously, how many people drop that in a weekend on bars? I mean, that's only $46 and change per week.
Play tickets are going to cost you 50+ each. Great dinner can run you $100 and up for two people. And seriously... buying candy and popcorn at the movies? Now THAT'S the biggest waste.
Sorry they ruined your game. Though I never got the idea as to why people would want to play a game on auto.

You need some moderation if you spend $140 in only 3 weeks. Usually f2p companies have the integrity to put these limits in the game. Not surprised K2 doesn't.
Still very sad to see what K2 did with Sword of the New World. The only time they should take away the Auto-Attack is when they fix the insane grind that makes AFK leveling concievable. However, the game is probably the most intense combat in any mmo game once you are micro-managing all 3 characters instead of using the auto systems. Too bad the game right now does not reward you for doing so.
Auto attack and auto heal still work, sort of, you just need to press the space bar after you get knocked down.
Yes, taking it out makes it hard to play it while away from your keyboard, but then you weren't really playing it that way.
Anyway, I don't think they had much of a choice. K2 licenses the game from some other company. They had to have the auto attack/heal coded especially for them, but that caused them to lag behind the game in Korea (and other regions) in terms of additional content.
So basically it was keeping the auto attack/heal all the time (and the picking costumes at character creation) or get new content. They went with the latter.
As to cash shop stuff, it is tempting to buy it, but mostly the stuff in the Sword shop is pretty minor. I think they make most of their money off of costume boxes, not power-up items.

Although I still enjoy the game just as much after the patch, I understand the difficulty for others to accept these changes - which I hope will not come too late!
At release, SotNW followed the subscription model used by its Japanese/Korean GE counterparts. However, the title failed to establish a strong subscriber base in the North American market. I blamed the failure mainly on the auto-defend combat option which encouraged AFK-leveling and prevented the level of player interation necessary for a healthy community. This problem may have been overlooked if K2 had analyzed their launch condition with GE progress in Asia as reference.
Afterwards, K2 approached the problem with the switch to "free play with microtransactions" business model expecting to retain the remaining user population. Unfortunately, the SotNW community (with poor forum activity) remain anti-social for the most part. Together with the lack of income to support further marketing and the need to bring in more players, the situation becomes a Catch-22.
Now, it appears that K2 has decided to tackle this situation by stimulating the need for microtransactions in attempt to increase income from current players. Maybe this will be enough to get SotNW out of the vicious cycle!
I think Sword of the New Worlds problem was that it was picked up by K2Networks who base thier decisions on Smedly 101.
Well thought out post. I think you have made a pretty valid analysis about the game's problems and it sort of makes sense why K2 is trying to change the situation by taking the AFK leveling aspect of out it.
I guess they should look into the "insane" grind that so many complain about, but it seems that its designed for the Asian market which historically has a higher tolerance for grind. (though let's face it, they frequently look for ways to bot and what ever to get through it, just like folks in the west)

I agree. I do think that they are already looking at the grind issue. They (K2) basically all but said that the XP boost is permanent at this point. So they are aware of the concerns.
I disagree that any company should stop a paying customer from spending money. You won't find any retail store that will stop you from spending money. You need to be mature and intelligent enough to know when enough is enough and it sounds like the OP:
A.) Was nothing more than an AFK'er who doesn't actually know how to play the game. You can still auto attack and you can still auto heal. You just have to be at your keyboard and hit the space bar. not only that but there are myriad other ways to communicate with your characters individually.
B.) Probably bought the wrong items in the cash shop. I spend about $15-100 a month but most of the items are cosmetic (Costumes wigs etc) or minor buffs (+20% XP, +5% Hit, +2 Armor Rating etc) that last for a short period of time.
C.) Really isn't into the type of game that Sword is at it's core (which is ok).

You continue to bash K2 Network with little to no reason. So, I will ask again, what has K2 Network done to make Sword so bad?
Change the name? ZOMG DA NAMZ BIN CHUNZD!!!
Add the Lock defend mode? It's gone now.
Gone F2P? All other versions are currently F2P so...
Launched as P2P? All versions except for China launched as P2P so...
I just don't understand. They serviced the game as well as anyone could have and in my personal experience has time and again proven that they value me as a customer. They answer tickets in the same amount of time as Blizzard and SOE. They respond to players in game and on the forums more than any other game company I have worked with. They have live in-game GM events daily.
And most of all, anytime there is an issue they are quick to respond to it, if not bring it to our attention first. Case and point the removal of the Lock Defend Mode was first brough up back in early December in a Podcast that they plastered all over the website. Since then they had 2 other interviews discussing it AND 2 separate forum threads where they clearly outlined their position and why they took it. More than anything (whether you agree with it or not) it is refreshing to see a company put their money where they mouth is.
John Smedley has NEVER gone to the extremes that I have witnessed K2 Network go through.

Just one think btw the kidding. Perhaps this is just your point of view, I mean, some other could love the new changes, or... then why they did them?
I spend over 1000$ /month on some of my hobbies, 140$ is really nothing. I cant understand how that is the only thing some people reacted to from OP post.
