I played lotro in august (so, before any bad news on Ryzom) for about 40 days, personally i didn't liked it at all. Just a clone with cool graphic, but the environment has no heart in it, just a good exercise.
I don't know how ryzom lovers can play it, maybe if you RP seriously u can enjoy it. I can't.... I hate being flooded by quests, a dumb harvers/crafting system and a world with so few mobs around doing absolutely nothing. Also, at least for the Champion class, the combat seems out of your control...I mean, it seemed to me that the char was not synced with your actions. A Loremaster class got a better impression. On the other side, the game is very stable and polished. So, definitely i don't understand how veteran MMO players can enjoy Lotro, while i think it is a good starting MMO for newbies of the genre.
If i have to play a quest based game i prefer something non-fantasy as CoH/CoV, that don't need any lore, any 'magic' environment and can be played casually. A fantasy game must provide something more.
This is just my opinion, considering the sandbox style seems totally death i don't think we'll see another fantastic game as Ryzom around (yes, with the proper development of course).
Anyway many homins are still around Atys and are still enjoying it.
Hey Gil, I just voted on one of your pretty pictures earlier today
Ryzom in it's current state is so sad (no new players on mainland, and uncertain future) that I hardly play any more. I wish I did, because the other games I tried lately has been nothing but dead ends.
Vanguard. Despite it's huge world and a few nice ideas (like Diplomacy) - I feel I spend more time changing my settings than actually playing it and the dead-looking Mobs can't compare to the hunting Gingos in Fleeting Gardens.
Tabula Rasa. I think the game do have fun combat and decent Mob AI, the game lacks the social stuff that makes Ryzom great (chatting ain't easy in a FPS UI) and I wouldn't mind anything else todo but combat-combat-combat. I haven't given TR a thought during holidays, while I wanted to come home and play Ryzom and even Vanguard.
I wish I could stand EVE Online's cold and hostile world, but I know I don't want to log in to that empty space everyday. Maybe Pirates of the Burning Sea will do, I don't know enough about it yet.
About Vanguard, i didn't found any trial key so i never looked at it, except forums and fan sites.
It seems having some nice feature such as a decent crafting system, not a dumb and boring one like most MMOs (except Ryzom, of course).
I tried Tabula Rasa in open beta, but it's too much as an FPS than an RPG game. It doesn't fit my tastes.
Aion seems promising, but i believe it will be a korean style game. Anyway I have good opinion of NCSoft and maybe it can be a surprise.
For what i've seen on the net, the only game that seems original and with a different approach is TCoS, The Chronicles of Spellborn. But so often the promises didn't matched the real release....
When Ryzom went down I drifted a bit from trying SWG yet again (UGH!) to trying Horizons, which did not appeal to me at all. I found myself staying on in a game I was in the beta testing unit for: BountyBayOnline. While nothing like Ryzom is has been a nice haven for me. It does have diversity in skills to some extent but, nothing like I am used to on Ryzom. But, like i said its a decent diversion till either Ryzom makes a comeback or I actually find something I can enjoy more then what I have now.
Aion seems promising, but i believe it will be a korean style game. Anyway I have good opinion of NCSoft and maybe it can be a surprise.
Nah, not really a Korean style game. There seems to be a lot of customization and it will be quest based (though there will be a heavier pvp component in certain areas).
The Dev on Aionsource.com indicated that to get to higher lvl will be a little more steep than WoW for comparison. That is quite different from the usual korean game.
Having said that, Ryzom players really have/had? something unique in that you had an open world as well as the ability to create your skills. There are very few (if any?) games that allow that. Then again, even though I played Ryzom for a little bit, it was a bit too "open" for a game where there wasn't a definite goal to shoot for. I realize you can make your goals but I wonder if most players need at least a "loose" track to guide them. Perhaps that is why Ryzom wasn't as successful as other games. It takes a very unique player to fully get the benefits of a game like Ryzom.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Spending most time on LoTRO (Laurelin /European server)and it really makes me miss Ryzom. The constraints of class based, quest driven gameplay in a world setting that is previously established and rigidly enforced is almost the polar opposite to what Ryzom was, and the lack of overt PvP can not build a friendly helpful community -like early ryzom- when the game mechanics prevent you helping other players in any significant way.
One of the best community building things that ryzom had, was the ability to rez anybody and everybody, so new players were always able to ask for help, and older players were able to show off their wonderful characters by waltzing in naked, massacring the pack of gingos and reviving the group of lowbies ... or the race to some obscure corner of the map, trying to reach someone before the clock ran out, Good fun, and great for the community.
Other games I have seen try to hide the presence of other players - perhaps to create the illusion of travelling in an uninhabited wilderness - but Ryzom wasnt set up that way, and while it was inconvenient for the PvP'ers, I beleive it helped the game have the feel it did.
Thank you for sharing your opinion with us. Now .. Go away.
Sad to hear. The game wasn't a fit for me, but I enjoyed it for the short time that I played. I hope this isn't the end of the last sandbox-style MMO... but I can't think of any that are still alive. Well, maybe EVE counts.
A ver large portion of Saga of Ryzom Arispottle community is getting together at the english fan forums of WELL online. It's a highly opriginal sci-fi MMORPG now in beta.
We are loking forward to it cause if they manage to implement even 110 of what is promised it'll be an extremely cool game.

W.E.L.L. Online appears to be the choice for most Ryzomers, even if its still in development. Though alot of players have made their way to EVE Online while in waiting for W.E.L.L. to be released. I am one of those players.
If any of you roleplaying Ryzomer's are looking for a place to hang your hat, while waiting for W.E.L.L. can feel free stop by the House of Marek.
Best of luck to Ryzom, and the greatest MMO community I have ever had the chance to be part of.
Eventhough Saga of Ryzom wasnt my cup of tea, its world really amazed me. Especially the mob behaviour made it feel like a living world. But Im one of those players that needs grand story arcs and sidequests a la Oblivion or Morrowind etc.
Still, I really see the world in SoR as example of how mobs could behave. The way herds of animals roamed the surroundings with carnivores hunting them, really impressed me. As opposed to many newer games where mobs are so obviously placed with some kind of editor and act as if there are no other animals in the game.
Bah, it is like SWG, which is probably one of the last games with descent citybuilding still out there. The sandbox MMORPG's seem to be disappearing and replaced with lvl treadmills
Never be another game like Ryzom. The part that pisses me off is the idiots who ran it into the ground headfirst, Gameforge, keep sending me invites for their stupid browser games that they apparently thought were so much more worthwhile.
But, in its heart, this game wasn't grindy nor difficult.
I think I can understand why some might call it grindy. Without story-driven quests linking things up, levelling any of the skill trees could be grindy.
But I liked it - even the especially grindy harvesting/crafting which I found a nice, restful way to pass time while waiting for other stuff to happen. And the fact that the environment was so unpredictable (eg. aggro mobs chasing each other around and wandering into harvesting areas) gave the world a sense of being alive.
Though I can't understand how zig could say it didn't feel different to other mmos he'd played. I've played most of them at least for a month or two and never seen anything like SoR.
Its sad to see an MMO go down that has a loyal following, but with so many coming out its inevitable that these things will happen. I hope that Ryzom finds a buyer for the players sake.
The problem now isn't lack of a potential buyer, it's the fact that the liquidation (a.k.a. the selling process) is paused for a time that could be as short as three months or as long as 1.5+ years, to allow for tangential legal proceedings (details available here).
At least, that is my understanding.
By the way, selling to Sony a game that appeals significantly to SWG pre-CU/NGE refugees is a very bad idea.

I don't think there's a relationship in this instance. The kind of gameplay SoR offers just isn't available anywhere else. I couldn't claim to know the low-down on all the mmos due for release in the next few years, but for the most part they seem more the 'standard' than anything SoR'ish.

I am staying. The lag is gone, the domain (which expired) has been renewed and there has been some changes (Silan level cap raised).

EVE Online is the only real alternative if you want a world that is open and player driven. Everything else IMHO is a rehash of EQ1 style gameplay.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:
GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

I think he was joking - particularly with the reference to Vanguard.
Just about anyone who knows what "mmo" stands for knows that Sony is the touch of death to them.
I don't even want to start imagining what unholy things Sony would do with SoR if they got their hands on it...
