Any recommendations on how to make the most of my trial time, what to avoid, what to be sure to do?

First run through, meaning first few hours, I'd definitely recommend playing a fighter class just to get a hang of things.
As for the whole ten days? Play as much as you can..GROUP FOR SURE...see how far you can get.
most importantly...
HAVE FUN IN STORMREACH!
p.s. BIG suggestion, when you group tell people you are new! Lot of low level characters running around are just alts of high level characters, so they know the quest really well and tend to rush through.
If you say you're new up front, usually they'll slow down and let you enjoy it!
You should definitely get into a group to do the waterworks and maybe even STK or the catacombs if you get a high enough level. The design of STK will take your breath away the first time. The catacombs will introduce you to one of my favourite and hated monsters at the same time..........the wraith! *Shudder*
You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.
My first "Wow!" impression in DDO was in STK in the "super-fire-kill-you-allovertheplace" room in the 3rd part... I was with my friend I volunteered to scout ahead first (I was a 4th level fighter mind you) and I kinda flipped out and dropped my mouse and died right there...
So yea, the game rocks.
The part I remember most in DDO is seeing a Beholder a split second before it killed me with a death-ray. Those things are really neat looking. So yeah avoid Beholders unless you can make them dance.

For me, it was the first Giant I saw on my way to Threnal. First of all...they're freaking GIANT! And unlike STK, they aren't the boss, they're EVERYWHERE!
but yeah...if you ain't ready for this guy...you're in trouble...

By the way, VON 2 the prisoner of the mind is another outstanding example of the design of some of these quests, its amazing!!

I sadly never got to finish Vons and see the red dragon. We got up to this guy and he was bugged or something. My first time there, was told stand in a circle around him. I don't know he did something and it was over. They all didn't want to redo the dungeon as it was late. So lucky you We3ster, hopefully someday I will see the red dragon in VONS.

A) Kudos to you for not mentioning anything
Kudos to you for being willing (or at least willing to risk disintergation)
C) I wish I could have been there to see it happening, because your description gave me a good chuckle/LOL moment at work that almost got me busted.

First wow moment, the troll in water works, funniest wow moment and comment," What was that about rust monsters and warforged?" while stepping into a new room.
My first major charcter is Amdaus the warforged cleric/fighter, he ran in the Anzac and Dungeonslayers guilds, both are great guilds.
Big tip for better game play in DDO, make sure you have a working microphone, voice chat in this game is very easy to setup and really brings the players together and don't be shy to group, some pepole just want to voice chat instead of typing, also make sure even if you don't have a mic, to active the sound setup so you can hear the rest of the group, makes it a lot easier to coordinate a group or party in a dungeon and to hear coments like," don't step there it's a trap! " or even," Oh look it's a rust monster! "
this is a great game, it's a very in your face style action game, not like wow or the others which are point and click and go make a cup of tea or coffee while your char fights for you, be warned thou at higher levels it becomes a group or die a lot game.
so good luck in Stormreach and may the Lord of blades watch over you.

I'd have died 10 times for the group because it was so much fun. The comments of 'wow' and the genuine fear the group had was well worth it for me. XP is easily achievable but experiences like that last forever!
