Straight up, I cant bear another World of Warcraft day. It just is so boring to me now that I cant stand it. I've been playing just because of my friends but soon as I log on now of days I just wanna log off.
I been playing mmorpgs now for over 10 years (Sad isnt it?). I played eq for years and years and the rest I have spent on WoW. I tried EQ2 at launch, and it wasnt no good, but I know however the game has changed drastically. I'm primarly a PvE raider, who does enjoy quite a bit of solo content. So on to the questions
My questions are as follows.
1. Is the population good? AKA am I going to be able to hit max level and find a raiding guild without much problems?
2. Can you level solo to max levels? Granted I'll still group and such just when I log on for an hour or two am I going to find stuff to do? Also once you hit max level is there still things to do solo or is it all group/raid based.
3. What would be a good DPS/soloing class? Would going the mage/necro route be good route to go? Do they have trouble getting in groups or raids?
4. Is the game losing population? I worry where it grows older im going to be getting into a sinking ship ;/ thats kinda last thing I want.
5. Finally from level 1 to max level (whatever that is) how many hours would one expect a fairly decent mmorpg player to take before he got to max level and ready to raid?

1. Population is decent. Its definately increased since RoK though. Alot have old players have returned. Unfortunately most of the low level zones are wastelands much like EQ1, since vast majority of the population in the 70-80 range. I find it hard getting low level groups most of the time. But if you get yourself into a good guild shouldn't be that much trouble getting help. If you play on Antonica Bayle I'm sure this is different since that is the most populated server.
2. Yes you can defintely solo 1-80, there's buckloads of solo content...level range 70-80 is practically all solo content. I guarantee you'll always have stacks of solo quests to get busy with if you can't find a group.
3. The classes that are often considered the most effecient/strongest at it are Necro, Conjurer, Wizard, Fury, Illusionist and Shadowknight. They all good great DPS. Necro probably takes the top spot because of Tainted Heals, ability to continually heal their pet through the use of certain spells and are single-target focused DPS. Mine is only 28 but they are by far the easiest soloers I've played with since I got that ability. You might find it harder getting into a top raiding guild playing those classes though, but it really all depends on who you know.
5. Dunno exact hours, but probably get can to max level in a bit over a month if you play alot and don't switch off combat exp, as well as do alot of instances and hand in lots and lots of Collections. I got to max level in almost 4 months, but that's cause I took my time. I heard of some players doing it in something like 3 weeks, but I'm guessing they don't shower, eat or sleep.

Short answer: You won't find salvation here.
The visuals are a breath of fresh air in Everquest II, to be certain, but unless that's all you're looking for then look the other way.
Man, ive character at Runnyeye and at percentage numbers: 20% players from my friendlist come back, 70% left game, and 10% are still playing.
Dont think, we can call it "increasing population".
I played EQ2 at launch too but left for WOW and GW
i returned in august, post EOF expansion
and been having fun for the last 8 months -- already have 1 80 and doing some alts
EQ2 is not for everyone but its a *much* improved game since launch
Friendlist is not a good tool for monitoring player activity
when I returned, I rerolled new characters
--- my old EQ2 characters I didnt bother with

thats cos runnyeye is a bad server.......:)
If i could mix EQ2's features like guild levels and achievements etc etc. then it would be perfect but the problem is EQ2's graphics lack int he art department and WOW lacks in the stuff to do. So i end up playing none of them lol.
1: The population is fine. There are plenty of raiding guilds around.
2: I've never maxed a character, but I've solo'd just fine into the upper 50s, so I'm sure it's doable.
3: Necros solo well, so do Furies(but they aren't really DPS), and I solo well with my bruiser.
4: I haven't seen any sign of a population loss. My guild has recently gotten a good number of new members, and there are always people on the /shout channel asking newb questions, so I don't see it dying any time soon.
5: This one I can't really say for sure, since there are SO many factors involved, but I'd say a month or two if you focused on that as your goal.
The biggest risk you run is that EQ 2 might not be different enough, and you'll find yourself bored fairly quickly since its too much like WOW. I had the same issue when I quit WOW and played LotRO, I just felt burned out.
I took a break from fantasy MMO's and don't plan to return to the genre until AOC or WAR come out later this year.

I think EQ2 is the best MMORPG out now. I disliked it alot back before the newer expansions and updates but now I am completely happy with it and it has all I need for now

Finally broke through Blizzard's brainwash, and quit WoW again. Reactivated my old EQ2 account, and found the RP back in MMORPG. Even though there's a lot of solo contents now, and most people prefer to solo. I will continue to play with my LFG tag up. No longer having to do the gear chase is nice. Felt too much like work that way. Just slowing down to see some sights, and explore some lands. Much better to enjoy the journey this way.
Look me up on Kithicor if you need a 40 warden. I'll be on as Zelf Silverwolf. I may suck due to not playing in a long time, but needs the actions to get back into form.
1. Population is good on some servers. I play on Najena and it's good throughout the day and night because it has a lot of Australian people.
2. Yes, you can solo to max level. The trick is you need to keep your spells and gear upgraded to at least AppIV's and basic crafted gear once you're in the 20's on. But like any mmo, getting in a guild and a set of friends you can group with regularly makes it so much more fun!
3. Both mage and necro are good solo dps classes. I have a lvl 70 necro, 70 fury, and 70 wizard and all 3 were fun playing solo content. In fact, EQ2 was the first MMO I actually enjoyed playing as a healer. I haven't been able to get on and play much since RoK came out as I'm currently deployed and the internet connectivity sucks here.
4. Actually, the game has gained in population since EoF release! And, like EQ1, UO, etc... I doubt it will ever die in the next 10 years. There will be loyal fans who will make their own servers and stuff if SOE ever pulled the plug. However, I doubt SOE would pull the plug and worse case scenerio would be that they'd sell off the license to a smaller company who would devote more time, money, and resources to making it even a better success!
5. Hmm, starting out new and not knowing the game, I think to get max lvl will take you about 80 hours. Just a guesstimate, but it's better than nothing .
Thanks for the replies everyone I went ahead decided to try out EQ2 again using 2 week trial instead of opening up my old account (Penny saved is penny earned).
However, lol, I found out I could only be one of the new Fae hehe. Well my wife simply adored the Fae however left something to be desired for me O.o .
Anyway I think im going to just open up old account give it a go. I only have the orginal eq2, am I going to be missing out on most of the new updates and such? I would figure as much.
If I am, what expansion should I get to ever "everything".
the trial lets you play everything but Sarnak
- you are forced to play Fae for your 1st character only
but can ignore that for subsequent characters
Kunark includes all expansions and all expansion packs
