The ring of your phone shatters the silence... (MMO addiction)

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

The ring of your phone shatters the silence of your home in the middle of the night...

Your friend at work (or school) you knew liked mmo games, but played one of the mmos that you haven't yet tried. He is dead. The sister of this friend tells you that she just found his dead body in front of his computer and this mmo on his screen. She is calling you because she found your number and name scribbled on a piece of paper on his computer desk. In desperation, she asks you if you know anything. Slowly it comes back to you as you wake up from a dead sleep that he has called in for the last several days after being on vacation for the whole week before that. Must be almost two weeks now since you even seen or talked to him at all. You tell her calmly that you don't know anything about why he would have died while playing this mmo game. You just heard him talk about it a little is all.

If you vote here, please explain your answer further, especially if you choose "Other" as your answer.

7.) I know this! It's the plot of that particular movie where the players die in real life if their avatar dies inside the game.

lol. I honestly didn't know there was such a movie. Sounds interesting. Was it just dying inside a video game, or an mmo specifically? I assume it's just video games in general.

The movie is called Stay Alive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stay_alive). It's a low budget film.

Yeh, never heard of it. Didn't get a good review at all at the website where I base if I rent/watch a movie or not at. I use www.imdb.com because it gives an average review of thousands of peoples' ratings. I typically say that if a movie gets a 6.5 or higher on that site, it's probably worth my time watching, under a 6.5 - then probably not worth my time. This movie "Stay Alive" sounds pretty corny from the review I read and it got a 4.3 or something. Sounds like a GREAT idea for a movie, but it just didn't get the funds or inspiration that it needed to make a good movie out of a great idea.

..Could you imagine actually playing an mmo where if you die in the game, you die in real life??!?? That's a little too hardcore for my taste even, heheh. It would certainly make you consider who you grouped up with in the game a little more carefully wouldn't it? ;-)

hehe it may have bad reviews but the budget of the movie is only 9 million dollars and it grossed 23 million which is considered a financial success (it made money for the movie makers).

Maybe i didnt read it all that well, but, it seems that it's unclear as to why the person died in the first place, sure, he was behind a pc, and sure he might of been logged on. but i dont think MMO addiction would cause death. If the person was willing to play a game for weeks on end, without food or rest, then they simply bring it on to themselves. It's harsh yes.

But i also take it that this person lives at home? with guardians or parents? I live with my mother and step father, I'm 22 and without a job, I spend alot of time in my room gaming, as a hobby and profession. If, for any reason, my parents notice i havent been out for simply things, like eating and changing my clothes (silly but true) They pop in and ask if anything is wrong, and if they can help with anything.

I'm not saying this person's parents are bad, i'm simply stating that MMO addiction is something that has multiple variables, like living condistions, social, mental, and physical health.

also, I'm not saying it never happends, We all know it does, but cause it's happend a few times, people are waking up and saying "Wait, how long have i been playing?", and taking a break/rest.

But as a gamer myself i voted on the first option. Knowing what the person did before he died might be a clue as to how and why it happend.

Well then we can certainly look forward to "Stay Alive 2" then can't we? Hehe. You know anytime they make a damn dime on a movie that they strongly consider making a sequel to it to try and squeeze even more money from it.

I voted 5)   Just because my friend in college was such an alcoholic he dropped out of school doesn't meen I should swear off alcohol, or even swear off drinking his favourite drink. It would remind me not to drink 6.5 days a week though.

This reminds me of the first mmorpg-related deaths I read about. People taking their own lives over a loss of some sort in Everquest, or people dieing from exhaustion and lack of nourishment.

It's scares me because it's real, and it's always on my mind when visiting some of my more mmorpg obsessed friends. If what you describe was to happen, I don't know what I'd do, but I doubt I could change the general opinion about the risks of mmo addiction.

What games do you play professionally and does it make you any money, usually for something to be a profession you have to make some sort of living from it. Im intruiged as to how you do this?

People die from MMO addiction because they lose their grip on reality and don't make an effort to get it back.

People can become obsessed with anything, whether it be drugs, sex, MMOs, whatever.

Just because someone dies of an overdose of sleeping pills doesn't mean I'm going to swear off Nyquil when I have a cold. If someone dies of alcohol poisoning I'm not going to avoid beer for the rest of my life. If my poor friend died of MMO addiction, I'm not going to never touch an MMO again.

All things in moderation is the key.

    LOL.

One thing I have discovered while being a member of these forums over the past several years... People will attack you, or worse yet attack you personally almost regardless of what you post. If it isn't because you disagree with their game of choice, it's because you post a hypothetical situation that "creeps them out" for some reason.

Lobotomist, sorry to have ummm creeped you out sooo bad man, heh. It's just a hypothetical question and something different to ponder then the 12,678 threads titled something like "EQ2 vs WoW". Sorry if something different "creeps" you out. Don't worry about me however buddy. I am a perfectly normal member of society, have been married for 4 years now, have two great kids, a 40 hour per year job, and live perfectly healthy (don't use drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc). I just like to stray from the beaten path a little, and again, sorry if my doing so on these forums "scared" or "creeped" you out.

As creepy a topic as it might be folks, it IS something that DOES happen with mmo addiction. There seems to be more and more such news reports of such deaths with every passing year. It is infrequent, sure. But certainly no less real then anything else about mmorpgs.

Good to hear mate. Cause you got me a bit worried.

As for people dying from MMO addiction... its sad.

I heared a girl killed her self to just so someone would put her memorial in myspace.

    Now that is sad.

No wait that is INSANE. As dying from MMO addiction is

At least people that die from Heroin addiction are actually enjoying

Alternative 1 to some extent. I would probably check it out and play around as a detective, I wouldn't however push this to the limit to try to find some conspiracy. It does of course depend on the persons personality, if I knew that the guy was an addict who had problems controlling how much he played I would simply let it be. If he on the other hand was more like the most of the my friends and liked to play but usually control over it I would consider it pretty strange.

Regarding the topic of dying from your in game avatar dying I would suggest checking out the Otherland series by Tad Williams, which does not only feature avatar death -> your death but also a very thoughtful topic. The Otherland series I would recommend to every person who plays games.

I actually thought this topic was going to be about embarassing cell phone ringtones, where some dorky mmo/game-related tune comes on and everyone goes dead silent giving you that  look.
