I was looking at what they planned on doing with the PvP in the game and found the weekly Q&A. Since this board is more or less dead and they ain't talking over there, I figured I would take matters into my own hands.
2. How large is the PvP zone in the game? I'm coming from Eve Online, where the entire game is basically open-PvP, but unless you want to get owned by police, you don't fight in high-security systems. What is there to do in the PvP zones besides killing (i.e. regular grinding and whatnot)?
About a 25-35% of the game territory is zoned for PvP conflict. Outside of these areas the LifeNet collars worn by the characters will not allow them to harm each other. The main point of interest in these areas are conflict towns, the heart of our PvP experience. Players can complete missions to take control of these towns for their faction. Players can't take control of a town just by killing other factions, but instead must accomplish specific goals; however, these goals will often lead players into conflict with each other. Once players have achieved enough goals to claim the town for their faction, the NPCs in the town ally with that faction. Guards will then attack members of enemy factions, merchants will only sell to characters with sufficient faction rating with the controlling faction, etc. By completing additional missions for the town, players of the controlling faction can upgrade guards, merchants, trainers, and other NPCs. These upgrades can boost the abilities of the guards, the selection the merchants offer, the knowledges available at trainers, etc. Through this upgrade process, characters can gain access to knowledges and equipment not normally available to them, such as knowledges for skills their faction is not well versed in. Also, each town has a number of special items and knowledges that can only be gained by the controlling faction. Players from other factions can complete goals to undermine the controlling faction and steal control for their own faction, so the town's allegiance is not static.
It sounds similar to how DAoC handle its castles in the frontier areas. Sounds interesting but I'm not to sure how this separation is going to impact things. Will it turn into "gear / skill quest" until everyone is maxed out so to speak, then get into this portion of gameplay? Or will it actually have a dynamic, world impacting feel to it?
I was sort of hoping for a world or semi -open system like L2, at least between factions. I really don't like "compartmentalized" game design as games are going these days. I like virtual world designs with choice and freedom. The last thing I'm interested in is another game with NPC's leading me around by the nose with makers over their heads, telling me what to do next and sending me off to kill 10 rats for a ripped pair of gloves.
But thats me and my opinion lol....
I'm still looking for info so maybe that will happen...
What do you think?

Well if I am not mistaken you can spend you whole game time in the PvP zones. It has a lot of quest with are not perse PvP orientated. Also taking enemy towns will be vital as you gain resources, more quest, etc. I will with my faction surly spend most of our time there.
Also it is gonna be imposible to max out everything. You can max out a couple of stuff. However they can also raise the skill point limit with easy and unlimited. So if new areas are being released (they have plenty of unused space already with are block off by chemicals and such) they raise this limit. I get the feeling this game relies for 70% player skills and 30% skill points and having the best weapon.
Yeah, last year there was a very good video of the starter area with the zombies in it. The dev was showing the quest and how combat worked. I went from a FP perspective when shooting to a third person when he was doing other things. He was saying the shooting didn't use random math like EQ or Tabula Rasa but FPS mechanics.
It all sounds good but....well still waiting. Now that they have some competition (Earthrising) maybe they will get their arse in gear.
As long as I get to live in the waffle warehouse and take pot shots at zorvan or baronjuju, I'll be happy.
(anyone who has that dev movie of the clone starter area, link it please, I can't find it anywhere)
FE seems to have a good mix between hardcore and casual PvP. The FPS combat system will also help the gameplay to feel a lot more alive compared to other MMOs.
Basically, if your reticle is over a target, you'll hit it. That's the FPS part. Thankfully, there's no leading of targets or anything like that, with the way the software is designed -- there's both a front and back-end packet bounce to check for targeting accuracy, and to keep people from using things like aimbots and such. It's also supposed to eliminate the issues with latency on slower connections.
The damage part is the RPG aspect, a basic opposed roll. Your skills + your weapon vs. Their skills + their armor. It's that simple
Also, be sure to check the new QotW this week, as well as FE-InfoTerminal.com, the most up to date resource for your Fallen Earth needs.
Meh! now we might even get PvP looting.
Hewwooooo Gank squads!
The last of the Trackers
This game is never coming out...
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
This game will indeed come out. They are mere months away from being complete, presently going through QA and fixing the small amount of bugs that are rooted out.
As for PvP looting, today's question of the week mentioned that the devs are looking into the possibility of 'consumable' PvP drops -- you won't drop your primary gear if you die(weapons/armor/etc...), but there may be a chance to drop ammo, medpacks, components, etc...
Not trying to be rude but would you mind linking something to back that up? Im looking forward to this game as much as anyone else but I haven't seen anything to indicate they are any further along now then a year ago.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, I would like that in this case.
There's TONS of new info that's been released. For all of it, check through fe-infoterminal.com and just browse through everything.
But for a more focused search, try this specific link:
http://www.fe-infoterminal.com/multimedia/multimedia.html
(The multimedia section -- specifically, the videos of the past few gaming conventions)
And from there, just wait a couple of weeks or so until GDC2008, and look at the info and videos that come out of there. Hell, if you can, try and go there -- last I knew (at least at AGDC), they have a fully playable demo set up for interested people.
Lets see, what else... they're in the middle of a major graphics overhaul and might be finished by then, I'm thinking that they're trying to get as much of their shine on before the convention.
I looked through it but I still don't see anything that implies they are almost done. If there is, its tucked away.
Considering they are doing a graphics overhaul...I would think that would hold them up not make things close to being complete. They are basically redoing work they already did...probably because they have taken far to long on this project and technology passed them by...which will happen again and again.
Hopefully I have to eat my words, as you said AGDC is coming up but....well, time will tell.
