However, part of me thinks that this is just a poor attempt at trolling, seeing as how you've already:
a) figured out that you believe you are more part of the story in LotRO
b) said you feel more detached while playing WoW
I wouldn't call such a harmless statement "trolling", but yes, there is not much new in asking this question. And the LotRo or WoW forum would probably a better place for this thread.
point taken. Maybe better on those forums. No trolling intended. Just a opinion on the difference I feel in the games. again, I like both, as well as others(I even enjoyed auto assault).
LOTRO lacks customization to more of an extreme. It's one of the most cookie-cutter (western) games I'd played in a while. Even differences in equipment seemed so marginal as to be insignificant. Made me feel like there was nothing to strive for, if my character would be effectively just like every other character of the same class.
At least WoW gives the players a few options which mean something to the gameplay, which sad to say, makes it the deeper game, in my opinion.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Book 12 is taking care of some of the customization problems. Its still not going to let you have pink hair but its giving more options. Truth be told LOTRO needs to be realistic on its armor or looks of actuall avatars. It would severly break the IP to have any hair colors that would require a dye kit to do.
As far as character cusomization you are completely right. There is a complete lack of it. The dev team did say however that there main focus now is fixing that problem. They are working on more options for characters. They said it would be through traits and virtues and another system they are not talking about yet. I wont speculate but my hopes is the virtues will be another line ontop of what they already have for a more specific purpose. I am also hoping they do something completely new for the system they arent talking about yet. Either that or a talant tree. But my hope is something completely new.
As far as the lack of variables on mobs it doesnt really bother me. I wish they would use some diffrent skins but most games have basicly the same 10-20 mobs. Sometimes they have diffrent skins and diffrent names but in the end they are the same.
Not easy to make neutral opinion on this. I will try to make it short since I've played both.
WoW - Good
Very good and responsive gameplay
Animations and graphics are "just right" for the game
Very good UI that can be changed however u want
Huge varity of diffrent goals in the game without having major effect on the overall gameplay
WoW - Bad
Resently balance of individal classes has been ruined abit
PVP versus PVE content balanced has been destroyed in terms of skills, effort and time. And thats the basics of every MMO. This will be costly
LOTRO - Good
Good story driven gameplay
Great looking world - Top job in that
Alot of social options like music and housing
LOTRO - bad
The story is not really suited for MMO cause of limited class variety
Animations are poor - Characters and mobs are kinda "dead looking" in this great looking enviroment. Sad really.
Poor UI and limited customisation
Unresponsive gameplay
Conclution:
Basicly - WoW has alot of more things that are "just right" compared to LOTRO. There are alot of warning signs in WOW atm tho. Overall balance of the game is at risk. Players will be checking out WAR and AOC and WoW could end up as the "biggest fall from the top ever" if those games deliver.
I feel that LOTRO was made 5-10 years to early in terms of MMO settings. The story is full of emotions and epic fights that current MMOs just can't deliver. Great graphics are worth very little if it doesn't support the gameplay. It still has some potentials tho. But that involves really hard work.

I think the trait system is fatally flawed right at the foundation, so I hope they don't just build on it. To me, it's not like developing a custom character, it's just collecting as many traits as you can, and using whatever's best. Last I checked, it was just token little differences, but even with more pronounced variance, I'm not sure it could ever really feel like customization.

I enjoyed the trait system, I enjoyed the new world to explore.
If you had played neither, I would recommend you WoW without a seconds hesitation. If you have already played WoW and want something new, providing you are willing to take a drop in quality (but also price) LOTRO wouldn't be a bad place to land for a while.
Nothing revolutionary or excellent in this game, but plenty to keep you busy. It's chod. A time filler. It adds nothing to the genre but it is a welcome distraction nevertheless.
Comments
That's a fair assessment.
But I think you'll find a bit more mature player base in LotRO.

It's pretty difficult to find an unbiased opinion on this forum, so maybe you should just play both of them and see what you think is different.
However, part of me thinks that this is just a poor attempt at trolling, seeing as how you've already:

b) said you feel more detached while playing WoW
So... why are you asking this question?

Lotro is a good PVE game. It has an immersion that WoW does lack to an extent. PvP is better in WoW.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
you mean there's a difference ?

Loved Lotro for a while but lack of character spec and customisation plus mob similarity across zones killed it for me.

LOTRO felt to me like a cut price WoW.
