Key point between those two timeframes: What competition was there?
2008 will (hopefully b'jeezus) see the release of not one, but TWO huge new MMO's, WAR and AoC and those two titles are almost guaranteed to eat into the WoW playerbase, as will the "niche" titles that are also scheduled to be released this year. Every MMO player you speak to is waiting for the release of something.
Will the new MMO's kill WoW? .. of course not; it's a proven truth that uber MMO's don't die quickly, they just decline slowly 'til they become unprofitable and are eventually shut down. I'm continually amazed that UO is still going despite being dated in virtually every aspect, but it's a clear indication that (once the development costs are recuperated) it really doesn't take millions of subscriptions to keep an established MMO running.
Will 2008 kill WoW for me? .. Yes, simply. I'm tired of WoW, my accounts are all currently cancelled. That's not meant as an insult to the game, it's a personal thing .. WoW IS a great game and did a lot for the genre (some good, some bad) .. I just feel I've "completed" the game as much as I care to and am ready to move on to something different.
Imo wow is outdated, and no way that it will be better then AoC or WAR, but WoW is the best mmo of its time. Only thing i wonder, when they say 10 million people are playing WoW. Do they calculate that with all the inactive accounts, or just the active ones?
They only count the active ones. Some people try to claim otherwise, but they're either lying or ignorant, niether of which is excusable when you share information.
I think WoW will weather AoC and WAR just fine. Just because a game is "new" and hyped up, doesn't mean that anything will come of it. Vanguard should have taught us all that lesson. Who could have guessed that a game that soaked up 30 million dollars would fail right out the door?
I think its because the people playing it are finally realizing that they are fed, All blizzard has to do is keep making expansions and adding 10 more levels and 8 more armor sets and the people will just sadly keep playing without knowing whats going on. but if thats what they like..
I really don't understand the comments like "WoW is a simple game for the masses" or anything pertaining to WoW being of low caliber. Can anyone name a successful MMORPG currently in operation that is more complicated than WoW or has anything close to the open world that WoW has? EvE is the only one that comes to mind, but I've never seen it's population break about 31,000 players at peak hours, and it's certainly not part of the fantasy MMORPG genre, belonging obviously in the Sci-Fi category.
Seems to me that almost every MMO that has come out since WoW's success has been obvious has copied elements from WoW in an attempt to mimic its success, or because developers think that that's what players want.
Eve doesn't even come to mind for me. I can't think of anything more simple than watching my ship fly on autopilot. Everquest Does come to mind, but that game was dumbed down years before WoW came out.
That's true. I just bring up Eve because it is a bit more difficult to learn and even harder to master, but it's a very different game with its own issues.
I'm just amazed at how we keep seeing more and more of these threads that predict the end of WoW while subscriptions numbers continue to radically climb. It's like there's a group of people who have nothing better to do than come to these forums to cause trouble.
WoW die? Nope, but you are going to continue to see huge drops in the Western population while the asian population continues to grow. You will also see Korean grind games start becoming more and more WoW-like due to WoW's sucsess in Asia. I think the Western WoW population wil be devided between several MMO's. WAR , AoC, LotRO, and Biowares new MMO.
i beg to differ on the very last point.
The upcoming mmorpgs will not take a huge hit into WoW's western players, the reason? As the mmorpg market was very small and questionable before WoW, so will the rest of games be, the 4 upcoming mmorpgs gathers to a certain hardcore/oldschool grp of people, whom does not belong to a large grp in WoW.
WoW will still have as high or even higher number of western players, because WoW is not like the other mmorpgs, it has become a popular game, which is being chained to new people all the time because of the number of players. I remember at the business and economics school some years ago, there weren't many wow players there back then but today an insanely large portion of those are now playing WoW, types of people who do never normally even touch a mmorpg.
WoW is just like Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft (RTS) it somehow gets players who do normally never play that respectable genre....
But since i were a mmorpg player before WoW, i'll ofcourse go with the fact i'll prolly be playing AoC, when it comes out and does some good deeds but i'll certainly stick with WoW wotlk aswell, so many people i know RL plays that game now, it's like CS when it were at it's peak, a cool funny game everyone could easily jump into, some would be great and own the others, some would just relax and have fun whether they were good or bad players.
All 10 million people cannot be wrong. There is something about WoW that is very appealing to a vast amount of people. Even after some people leave for other games, there will always be a rich fanbase. Even if WoW gets knocked down to 5 million, that would still be a huge amount.
Many people, seem to state that WoW will die the more people it gets. I think that the more people it gets, the more new servers are going to come around. That is probably the only real thing that will happen. I think that WoW will never truly die as EQ never did.

It was a question and a statement. I didnt ask anyone to stop doing anything.

With all honestly unless they make a wow 2 (which they arent) WoW will probable be around for another 7-10 years just as EQ still is. People will quit to go play other games, people will quit other games to come play WoW, others will still make WoW there first mmo. Stop saying the game is dying to do so is ignorance
Oh, my mistake then. Not.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care? Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Hmm, you just proved your hypothesis wrong. WOW one day will see a severe decline in population, and if you think EQ is anything but dead right now I've got a bridge to sell you.
But you're right about one thing, it will hang around forever, I'll bet my grandkids will play it one day. (soon as I get some)

Sure. One day the sun will explode and the human race will cease to exist too.
And wow is not likely to see that day any time soon, at least not in 2008, given what the competition looks like.

I dunno about all of that. Better to say "we'll see what happens" than anything else. As for me, LOTRO is my game. All of these games will decline eventually. It's just the nature of the beast, unless the beast changes, which it can.
i really doubt ur grandkids willplay this, after so long when most ppl move on and just the harcore lovers stay, like EQ as an example, yes its been going on for a long time, but its basicly just vets. there wont be a huge amount of fesh meat comming in and getting addicted as there is now (though the new ppl rate is slowly dropping)

He he .. that is why I started my char in a low-pop server and moved him to a new one as soon as the opportunity opens up.
