    I play EVE now.

So you haven't actually played the released game. Why even respond to this post beta tester?

Tell me, what did they change before Beta?

    Played:
From Earth & Beyond, Anarchy Online, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa (Beta), EvE Online, City of Villians, Atlantica Online, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, PlanetSide, RF Online, Second Life, Fallen Earth.

The quests are fine to do along if you like  storylines.
Shipcombat feels very basic and kinda slowin pve so your best option is to shot down the crew & board every npc ship to shorten the battle.
Wih this tactic you can win with two lvl 16 ships
vs a lvl 36 ships.((and thats how to grind xp and loot 8(   ))
Avatar combat is clunky and complicated at the first view, but very simple once you pic the right sets of skills and not all that bad. Still NPC tend to swarm you in some missions what means certain death.
The concept is fun but when the lvls come slower it turned into a very repetiv grind for me, the suroundings & szene wont change much and the exploration is non eixtance. Economy can be fun if you want to get into it.
Im a bid sad, cause you cant *train* & *hire*your own crew.
Also the outfitting of your ship is in no way realistic but you have upgrade slots like on a mmorpg paper doll?? 8(
FL somehow  felt also  to go with skills + cooldowns like the norm of mmorpgs rather then micromanaging & training you crew for certain abilities or a ton of modification for your ship.
Giving ships lvl requierments is in my eyes also a bad idea.Still the FL Devs are the nicest team
of a game company i enountered and i think
they will make this game great in the ways it is,
means: new maps, new ports, better AVcom
    exploration maps,

O well maybe im just to old for any form of grind
only EQ2+my guild there  managed to make me go  to max lvl.
Yes.. the fun is many time better with a good
society/guild in POTBS like in Eve what i play now.
    Cheers

Nice update to this game would be "control over your crew". For example I whanted to make my Pirate an old Rastaman (you can make one in the game and thats great) and then when I see my grew it's a gang of skinheads hehe. So what do I end up with? One Rastaman and a group of boneheads. =D

I agree, I remember playing as a Frenchman during beta and it was awkward having a bunch of crew wearing clothing which obviously shouted Pirate.

That would be a nice thing for FLS to add early on, to increase the level of customization offered so far.

FLS has some work to do but it is a nice break from the normal crap. PotBS needs some help with the ground attacks. I think that is one of it's weakest points. I like the idea of having a smaller less powerful ship take out the floating tanks. It really evens things out. It gives everyone a chance and you will see in a lot pf pvp battles not everyone is out there in a battleship because of this fact.

It's only been a couple of weeks since launch. Things are always rough in the first few months. FLS is already working on the first patch and I would assume within the first 4-6 months some kinda of content update.

Leveling is the fastest I've ever seen in any MMO. There are already a few 50's out there. I dunno if this is the answer to any prayers but like I said it is a nice diversion from all the fantasy crap / wow clones out there.

    My 2 cents.

I don't think the bug fixing will help. Under the five years working on the game they forgot some important things. And by looking at the population after two weeks... well It don't look good.

    • People (not all but many) do not like instances. This game is full of that. From ports, to ship combat, to boarding combat. Mistake number 1.
    • Avatar system is bad and the Dev team must work on a new version. This is something that will take time and Dev's told us last week that it will be hard. Mistake number 2.
    • People like the freedom to explore the world. You can only visit ports and on land we have invisible walls that keep you away from going into the woods behind the town. Mistake number 3.
    • 80 Ports and many are exact same port with a different name. Mistake number 4.
    • Level 50 in a week and the only end game is PvP. Not all players like PvP. Mistake number 5.
    • You can't jump. A simple little thing like this. Mistake number 6.

This game have too many mistakes and that will lower it. I didn't post this to troll.

    "Misstake" number 7.  Its "mistake"

Your points are all valid, but I think EVE's proven that there's a market for a game that has most of the "issues" you listed above.  No, it won't be WOW, but I think if PotBS matches EVE's success the developers will be satisfied with the results.

Being the intenet we normally don't comment on spelling (since the US Americans can't and it's unfair to pick on them).

I think the Key difference between EvE and PotBS is that in EvE everyone plays in the same game world.

PotBS is split between several different servers.  IMHO it would have been much better if PotBS had been designed so that everyone played in the same world.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

The server population on about 1/3 of the servers is "heavy" or "very heavy" on weekends. So I wouldn't bury them yet. However I do agree with some of your points. The instances in towns are unecessary and don't do anything to help you immerse yourself  into the game environment. I thought I understood why they did this but now I have no idea.

Also, and this really bugs me, it's always day or night at a port and it never changes. For example, in Bartica, it's always night, in another port it's always daytime. Sea battles are almost the opposite. In macro view, its always daylight, good weather and calm seas, but when you enter a combat instance, it might be day, night, sunset, sunrise, stormy or clear. Then, when you board a ship, it's always daylight and clear weather, even if you were in the middle of a storm before you boarded. Kinda makes your head spin.

It seems to me this game could have been much better. To be honest I don't know why it took them close to 6 years to create it unless they were understaffed or short of money, or both. After that amount of time I expected a much more polished product.  I'll keep playing for a while longer, but I know the game won't hold my interest for anymore than one or two months.

  • SpeiberbobSpeiberbob Member Posts: 233

Yes i expected it more polished too.

But for me other points are the gamebrakers:

-You said no jumping was a mistake, but i dont wanna see bunnyhopping pirats and naval officers, so i consider that a wise descission.

    - No synchrone Day/Night circle realy steals from immersion

-You said walking in cities is not needed. I say it is. Eve will add it for the social hubs and to be honest the Ports are filled with live and i like it. Without the game would attract less people.

Still to few layouts around.(and that is also why they have day n night citieas ^^)

    - Avatar combat is not TeH blast but its also not all that bad ..bad is..theres only  a couple of maps to run around, and in some maps npc will swarm you 5to1  regardless how you approach. I think they will fix that.

    - some instances are needed but not all, please read the dev logs they explain pretty well why they have so many instances. For my part i dont mind em so much, lets hope they will get the best out of it.

    - Only one server, i absolutely vote for that

    - i dont see lvling in a Pirat game making any sense, i would have went for a *skillbased* System plus  a trainable crew, lots of upgrade slots for your ship which make realistic sense.

Upgrades that allow the player to plank his ship till it wont move anymore or put guns on it till it sinks, anyway lots of options. I would try to avoid

the mmorpg feeling with paperdoll fitting where upgrades are just like armor or weapon slots

,consumable are just like potions, and skills are the speciall attacks and buffs *copy paste eq,WOW*

Ya..well.. the game aint bad its fun for sure, just not my white rabbit.

I'm shocked by one thing and only one thing.  As a pirate captain, I cannot make anyone walk the plank.  That just takes the wind right out of my sails...

You can't jump. A simple little thing like this.

I didn't post this to troll.

Well that's where me and you differ:

    1) Jumping. I love the fact that there is no jumping. Why would anyone aside of 8yr old kids be bothered with that? When I played Counterstrike the biggest joke was everyone constantly running around. I was like, "riight..". So no jumping is a plus. Also, I liked Guild Wars. 8yr old players from WoW complained about no jumping. It was ridiculous.

Get over it, jumping in a pirate game? Have you ever seen a pirate movie where anyone jumps around? Any movie at all? A single movie where people keep jumping like their *** is on fire? Have you ever seen ANY movie where people keep jumping all the time? Have you ever seen a war movie of any kind where people keep jumping? I saw more jumping in one game of Counterstrike than in all the movies I've seen in my life.

Besides, what is it with jumping in 21st century? Is every MMO player glued to his chair, lacks fresh air and parks? Do you people not do any physical activity, so that jumping in a game is the only way of ..stretching?

    2) Instances. They are good. Without instances you would have.. what exactly, open sea? And it would take.. days to get from one end to another? Yea yea, you're smart and all that. You would have done it better. Oh wait, more people would quit because of that than because of instances.

    3) PvE endgame. Your PvE endgame is playing Freetrader and supplying PvPers with goods. Not good enough for you? Find another game.

    4) Yes, you're a troll. If you don't like the game, move on. You don't have to create 100 posts on a game you don't like. Only trolls do.

    1. So jumping in an MMO is for 8 yr old kids?  Let me get this straight.  In a game that prides itself on realism and historical accuracy, asking for the ability to jump is childish?  Oh, and btw, I've NEVER watched a pirate movie where they didn't jump at some point while boarding and fighting between ships.  Never.  And that comment about jumping in game is the only way MMO players stretch?  Was that supposed to be humor?  If so, it failed.

    2.  Nice that you have a magic ball and can tell us that more people would have quit without instances.  Of course, no one would really care how long it took to cross the open sea as long as it was interesting.  And while we're speaking of instances, what's with every room in every building being instanced?  How exactly does that fit into your theory?  I just love the crafting trainer -- talk to me outside, now come back inside, now back outside, now back inside, etc, etc.  What a painful use of instancing.

    3.  I suspect that as this game matures, more PvE will be added.  If not, it will get old VERY fast IMO.

    4.  Why would anyone aside from 8 year old kids start name calling over a game?  Food for thought.

It is actually more or less historically correct as it is now. At that time not even officers where issued uniforms, that didn't come until around 50 years after the time the game is set.

So every crew member had to supply his own clothing which meant they wouldn't look much different than pirates.

    1. No, but demanding jumping where devs didn't include it - is. And not just in MMO. Yes, in a game that prides itself in realism and historical accuracy, demanding to jump is childish. See previous poster msg. Also, you didn't reply to the part where I asked what is it with teens these days and jumping options in games? Do you really have so little or no physical activity these days that jumping in online game stimulates brain and muscles without any IRL moving? This is a serious question actually, I cannot imagine someone who daily goes outside the house for at least 20min walk, to demand jumping in a game where jumping would be pointless and doesn't add anything tactically, strategically, or esthetically.

    2. You don't need a magic ball for that. Devs already TRIED to make a more realistic game, where you travel realistically over the open seas and all that. And you know what? No one liked it, except few hardcore people. And even for them, who knows how long they would stick in the game before it gets tedious.

Regarding every room in every building, yah I might agree with you there.

    3. Well it's MMO :) Of course things will be added :) I mean, hopefully :) Still, I have to admit, this is one of the rare games where I find being Freetrader an interesting concept. Haven't tried it yet though, but fueling PvPers seems more interesting to me than grinding for some self-items in other MMOs. I do understand it's a personal choice though.

    4. Frustration :) But I offer my apologies :)
