Good luck in your search
Some of my fondest MMO memories are from having pets. The 2 that I remember the best are UO, which is not in your requirements, and SWG.
SWG no longer has the same kind of pet class it used to, I was a Creature Handler back in the good days and it was a blast. The only other game that came close to that was a Tamer in UO.
For me it was more fun to go out hunting for that unique and/or powerful pet, tame it and train it as your own. It felt more like a true extension of your character and not just another spell in your arsenal with a creature skin.
Yeah Gendail....miss those days
I play WoW since I left SWG/NGE. I rolled a hunter of course...but it's just not the same. I had quite a business in Mining, Hunting, harvesting, supplying mounts....several nice homes....I truely miss the pre NGE SWG...and YES...the most gratifying part was spending weeks tracking down a rare pet and taming him.
I would so like to see another mmo like pre NGE SWG...it had sooooo much to do.
I've seen things, you...people, wouldn't believe... . Attack ships on fire, off the shoulder of Orion... . I watched C-Beams, glitter in the darkness near the Tannhauser Gate... . All those...moments will be lost in time... . Like...tears...in the rain...

oh lol thanks but that stinks that the only other choice is a WoW hunter
Unfortunately I have to agree...it is sad...but I'm still looking. WoW is getting old hat.
Even with their updates and patches it has turned into a gear grind.

City of Villains mastermind class. Have a choice between commandos, thugs, ROBOTS, zombies, and ninjas.. they each have their own trait.. obviously because robots don't kill the same as zombies. You also get to choose a second powerset, to support your pets. Dark, poison, traps, archery.. All of the summons have a ranged attack, and melee.. you can get a bind pack to further your control. From there you can pretty much command their every move, and make them do sweet dance moves.. There are 3 tiers of pets.. you have the goons, the lieutenants, and the boss.. (3 goons, 2 lts. 1 boss) you'll have the full set at I believe level 38.. until then it's not exactly hard, but once you get the last guy in there.. "you'll" be stomping everything.
Thug/poison was my powerset of choice, there is no "best".. because COV/COH is about what button you press, and when you press it.
As stated before, when SWG-emu (which rolls back crap SWG to its original blissful state.. which we all came to love, and skip our jobs/classes/meals for) then it will have a rock solid creature handler class.. full of Star Wars creatures, and diversity.

You have at least 6 pets fighting with you (at higher levels)...and as many as 17! Dark for example, give you a dark servant at level 38...which is basically a pet doing most of what you are doing, just not as wisely.
The Masterming can start, at level 1, with a pet (they usually all do, but you could take an attack instead if you want...then at level 2, you are presented the option to take a new power)...at level 6, you summon 2 pets instead of 1...at level 12, you can select a new power with another pet...eventually you have 6 pets from your primary, 3 nearly identical (the 3rd may be slightly different), 2 nearly identical "officers", and 1 leader pet.

mmmm gang wars +10 mini-goons! Also referred to as minions.. with their sledgehammers, baseball bats, and shanks.. it's hilarious to watch them all fall to one giant fire bomb.. also, as thugs.. there is one crazy arcanist that throws molotov cocktails.. how cool is that!
One thing that always irked me as a mastermind though is, COV is full of zoning.. and you lose your pets once you zone in or out. Even for a split second, or log in or out. So you have to spend 1 minute to re-apply upgrades to them (which is a must)
Here is the link to the free trial.. just remember you want to make the character as a villain, not a hero. Heroes don't have a minion class. http://www.mmorpg.com/freetrials/cohissue11_trial.cfm

Star Wars Galaxies still has a pet system under the name of Beast Master. It's a rather indepth system and the process of actually creating your pet is rather complex. Your final crafted pet will be a very effective weapon - my Beast Master/Bounty Hunter can take on alot of things solo that aren't generally soloable.
That class used to be Bioengineer...but was also eleminated with NGE.

Basically a pet breeder/warrior class. But you have to wait for it to launch first, or pray to whatever gods you beleive in for a beta invite. LOL

It has simillarities to BE, but it's also rather different in many other ways too. Over the last 2 years, a number of pre-nge themed features have been returned to the game - although in most cases done in a different way to what it was back then.
Anarchy Online has 3 pet professions (engineer/meta-physicist/bureacrat)
engi has a big robot and on later lvls (with shadowlands expansion) a dog (next to the robot) who hits v hard but doesnt have much hp, mp has a heal, mezz and combat pet, at later lvls the combat pet transforms from a "floating meatball" in a demon, crat has one attack pet but can "charm" any mob that isnt very high compared to the crat, so crat has 2 attack pets, at later lvls he can charm unbelievable powerful mobs and can solo a lot, just takes a while.. the crat can even have 3 pets at the same time with a 2nd very short charm nano
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
Check out Mythos!

Rapplez is very pet centric mmo. It is f2p with an itemshop so you might want to try that.
yea...I've been playing AO the last week or so...have tried each of the "pet" classes... If you stick with it past the starter zone, AO actually seems to have a lot of content. I tried it several months ago and didn't give it long enough to det past the starter...so you might give that a try.

I would try Rappelz. Pets play a major part on your abilities in that game.
Rappelz is great if you're into a involved pet system, but be warned, the grind in the game is truly epic, and even more so in regards to leveling pets.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Um that's rediculous. Wow is NOT the only MMO with a pet system. In fact, almost every MMO I tried had some version of pets. There might not be another mmo with a pet system just like WOW's, which is an awesome pet system, I agree, if u want to give Blizzard more money they don't need. But if ur willing to kiss a lot of frogs (download a bunch of duds) I bet u'll eventually find a game with a pet system u'll love as much as WOW. I did. I'm not the typical testosterone rich gamer, but I'll list the mmo's with pet systems I enjoy.
Guild Wars' pet system is not nearly as well thought out as WOW's, but the hero system in nightfall/eye of the north is really a nice pet system in its own right. The hero pets are humans/intelligent creatures. U can have up to 3 out at the same time. I LOVE the GW's heros I collected. I actually like them better than WOW pets in a way. Their skills/gear is customizable. Their silly sayings are entertaining. I have made some of my heroes more powerful than the char they are on. I often sit back & let them fight for me and entertain me while my character picks up loot.
If u don't mind grinding or enjoy playing the economy game to make quick $ & u like c-ing ur pets evolve (like i do - 'course, i'm a girl remember), u might like these f2p's: Silkroad Online & Last Chaos.
In Silkroad, there are 2 kinds of pets u can have out simutaneously, 1 kind fights w/u & the other can collect & store ur loot. u need to either buy the fighting pet with real $ (about $10 US I think) or earn a million gold 4 the free grey wolf, which takes some ferengi talent. By buying and reselling I was able to buy my wolf in two weeks worth of afk merchant stalls. The fighting pets in Silkroad start out as cute young animals (like a puppy) and then evolve as they mature. The loot/storage pets will stand by ur side with ur fighting pet, but they don't evolve or fight. They gather loot. These are super cute & quite useful 4 the necessary grinding and optional PVP (other players drop loot). But these must be bought w/ real money (about $5 EACH month, they will die after 30 days and to revive them u must kick in another 5 bucks). I am tempted to pay for a loot kitten on Silkroad. I really enjoy that game & they're SOOO cute.
Last Chaos is the most mind-numbing grind fest I've ever endured, but I play it all the time because I love LC's pet system. U can hatch the pony or dragon (LC has only 2 pet options) at level 1 (if u get a quick lucky drop, have a generous friend or can make quick in-game cash (players ask 2 much 4 them imho)). Mine droped at level 8, after about 3 hours of play. The LC pets level slowly (after an embarrassing amount of grinding) and do not fight. They can get ur loot, buff u, and evolve into mounts at level 30. (I have both options, the horse has defensive buffs for when I'm grinding skill points and the dragon has attack buffs for when the fighting gets difficult). The pets grow from cute young ones to impressive mounts in a similar way to the fighting pets in Silkroad.
There are lots of other good games with pets out there. My first rpg was Dragon Warrior Monsters for gameboy, which had a pet breeding system I loved. If anyone knows of an mmo like DWM plzz let me know. That would be the ultimate for me.
