Just a beginning note. This post may seem wierd or even stupid. It wouldnt be the first time for me But this is one topic I think WAR as a game can/will thrive on.
How much realm pride will you have?
This is a serious question I keep asking myself. How much realm pride will other people have? It falls under many catagories. Will you over price your goods? Will you take that weapon drop thats rare, but only a minor upgrade for you when it will be a major upgrade for the person standing next to you? Will you bother trying to work out strat's in RvR battles or will you just try to kill whatever moves? Will you take that extra 10,20,30,60 min to help out that new player later down the road? There are many more questions involved with realm pride but this gives you an idea of what I mean.
Lets face it. Not all WAR players will have played DAOC or be an avid fan of Warhammer. Not everyone will have played a game where realm or faction or whatever you want to call it actually matters.
So how much realm pride will you have? How far are you willing to go to help your side out as a whole, not just becomming the best or richest YOU can be.?
Remember. It is one thing to say you have realm pride. Its another to do what you can to help your realm become the best.

I have never played a RvR game before, but I know how I usually play mmorpgs. I have a lot of time to spend in the game as Im disabled and spend most of my days at home. With much time on my hands, I can take the time to help out people, without feeling stress. From other games I have played I notice that I tend to almost help out other people too much without thinking about my own game session. But as long as I think its fun, well then its alright. Thats why I play... for the fun. lol

A lot! But Im not sure how the rest of the playerbase will act... Gonna be fun to see if the realm unite or if it is as every other game out there, every man for him self. But still again, I have never played a RvR game so I might get suprised how things roll out.

No, I have many times given away armors, weapons, master skill upgrades for free in EQ2. I always try to go with "Need before greed". Once there even was a really cool armor piece that I could use myself, but there was this poor guy in the group... he didnt win any loot rolls at all. Just to see how happy he become when he got the item, was rewarding enough for me. The other in the group even told me I was a idiot for giving it away. lol... I play to have fun...and that was fun.

Did that in SWG. Dont know how many "newbies" I helped out. It was so much fun. Starting up groups with new players, doing missions and learning them "the ropes". 2-3 hours later they got it and I send them away with 20.000 credits(Enough to get started in the pre-cu era) each on their journey. Man, that was really fun. I even got /tells several months afterwards from some, with "thank you" in them.

Im willing to help as much as I can. Have never played mmorpgs to become the most über, richest, handsome(lol) character in the game.I really looking forward to play a RvR game for once. Just to see if the common goal makes the community more bonded together. Gonna be fun.

Will I have realm pride... yes, to an extent everyone will. When we are in an RvR battle, people will look out for each other. BUT when the time comes to group and do some PvE or PQ's, you can bet that everyone is going to be looking to upgrade themselves. Unless the group revolves around a guild environment, then people will be giving items away for the betterment of the guild.
PS, not to the quoted poster.
I told myself not to do this but I have to If your sides city gets sacked a couple times in a row are you going to pull a Belichik and walk away or are you going to stick with it?
Nothing is worse than someone who says they have realm pride just to switch because one side is winning at the time
about being greedy.... is it even possible since city siege gonna be like a public quest, and therefor you get points. I remeber a video, where it was mentioned that it was gonna be like "Vegas" where you could use your influence points on 1 item and hope to get it, or spread em out on a few items and have less chance getting em ?
To me the best illustration of realm pride would be when a group of 50+ players are raiding a pve boss and stop the raid after 3/4 of the dungeon is completed to go defend the City from invading enemies.
This happened in DAoC, and was to me the ultimate proof of Realm Pride.
IF WAR cuts down on instancing and does not sets caps on raids ( so player 26 can join the 25-main raid ), then I am sure it will happen.
And yes, I would stop my pve session to go help and defend important keeps or the city.
I would also pass up items if they are only a slight improvement to me, but only to people I know, and one only get to know people if you play with them, and you can't play with your realm if endgame raiding is limited to a certain amount of people. That would seperate the Realm and divide it into guilds.

I agree... If I am on a PvE raid, I will gladly drop what I am doing to help defend our city! As to the group, I will also hand over that weapon or piece of armor that is more needed by someone else in the group. It's not like I won't see something similar sooner or later, and if I don't then his ass better be watching my back on the battlefield:)
Realm Pride is huge. I mean, it's an MMO, it's about the group, not the individual.
For me it's just pride of my character.
The game forces you to work for your realm, if you don't you will become a looser along with your realm.
When players begin to realise that they need to work together to accoplish goals in the future, that's when they begin to feel responsibility and pride for defending the realm.
I's also good to really hate the other side, that way you won't even consider to play on their side.
It really makes me happy to hear these responces. While I didnt play DAOC to know how a good game does rvr (f2p) people usually dont stick around long enough to bond with them) my one concern is that while I would feel pride in helping people which in turn helps my realm, others would be all about me me me. While I am sure there will be thoes people, there always is. it seems at least so far everyone is on board with me in wanting to make our side be the best it can be.
This is good for both sides. The more people help eachother and work togeather the more fun its going to be for both sides. It just seems to me like it would be no fun if one side dominates all of the time. It would get boring not having to struggle to win your zones.
Great post OP
Thats a very crucial part of the game. The realm that helps each other out the most will int he end be stronger and better force.
So Realm first me second...!

Yes great post. It brings back so many memories of DAOC for me when i saw realm pride. I and most people i knew did what you said in DAOC giving X item to someone before me etc. I actually remember some of my best times were when i was on a Glacier raid with can t remember how many more and we were near the end. Well in Alliance chat pops up ALBS ON RELIC KEEP !!!!! we all promptly suicided without even a second thought. We all as a raid group went to said keep and helped beat back the Albs Also i mean anyone lvl 20 or higher was there helping knowing they would die repeatedly we didn t care. The more numbers there the better was awesome times. This scenario happened numerous times and each time loved it and can t wait for this in WAR. Realm pride is huge imo as an above poster said if you don t show some ralm pride you ll become the marked loser of the server:)
Realm pride is something that you build over time. It isn't something that you can say you have before you've experienced anything. Maybe some of you haven't played DAoC, it is built over time. WAR might do it even better, since you'll be butting heads with your warring factions more times that you can shake a stick at.
The OP's definition of realm pride is different than mine. The OP talks about sacrificing your time, gold, items, and energy for the betterment of the realm as a whole. In my opinion, that is just going to be determined by the individual personality. Asking someone how generous or how greedy they are going to be seems a little odd. Generous players will always be generous. Greedy players will always be greedy. Wowheads may or may not have a difficult time adjusting to the overall atmosphere of the game, I think it is those players who will be the most likely to put themselves ahead of everything.
I think realm pride is more of a loyalty issue. If you're out hunting and a nearby fort has been overrun by the enemy faction, how willing are you to help, no matter the odds? If you're sitting in town tooling around and you find out that your faction needs your help in one of the tier 4 zones... will you care? Or will you drop anything that you're doing and go help the cause? Will you go hunting enemy faction members because of pure hatred? Or will you do it because you can? Or will you do it only for personal gain via realm points?
Not all of us are friends. Even if we're on the same server, same faction. Most people (and this applies to the real world) will look out for themselves. If they can help someone without it inconveniencing them, they will. Maybe sometimes you'll go out of your way, but you don't make it a habit. Friends and family will be the most important. By family, I mean your guild. So, if you are asking whether someone is greedy or not, it's not the same as realm pride. The only reason I'm taking the time to type this out is because I did play DAoC, so I have firsthand experience on how it works.
Well, I remember when I was playing DAOC in the glory days (pre TOA) players frequently dropped what they were doing, jumped on long horse rides out to the front to help take/defend a crucial keep that might help us gain/retain control of Darkness falls.
I didn't answer all of them if I was engaged in some other activity, but if it was crunch time, or those damn Hibbies were holding a key Albion keep, I'd get out there and throw myself into the fray.
Relic keep raids brought out the best in everyone. I recall defending our keeps even when my frame rate was slowed down to a slidehow, and still managing to kill 1 or two players, rez 3 or 4 before dying myself. (probably too me 30 minutes to do that with all the lag going on)
I used to love hearing that we were about to retake DF. I'd head out to the frontiers with my guild, smack down a few keeps, then head for DF to clear out the vermin (Hibs/Mids) that were inside. Later, when we lost DF I'd battle to the death trying to keep it out of the hands of invading hordes.(which was pointless of course)
No, early DAOC had great realm pride. I later moved on to the FFA PVP server and that was an entirely different (and more fun IMO) game. There it was all about guild pride, and we battled the big guilds on a constant basis for personal control of "our" keep.
