Free trials or else?

with the current trend of mmo's..........mostly that they are garbage, it should be law that any new mmo that comes out (sans the free ones) will have a mandatory 1 week free trial, free download. this would save not only consumers money, but vendors as well as they would not need to stock mindless pieces of dung.

the toys that developer throw into "limited edition"!!! or "pre-order"!!! are laughable at best, where is my superdupergodmodetoon? as they know upon releasing the pile excrement it will need patches for days so i will NEED my omnipotent toon. many folks get drug into this trap, i wonder how many will be spazzing over the mammoth for aoc or whatever warhammer spits out?

ok enough, seriously the deverlopers need to think about this, all of them. as for me until i see 90% for a game on several diff boards.......i wont be buying it, come to think of it i havent bought one in a three years, they are that bad, and thats sad.

can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.

For one, I agree with you. I won't touch a P2P unless I've played (and enjoyed) a trial run first. I just won't spend the money without being able to kick the tires.

Most of the CE packins I've seen though don't add much to the gameplay (mostly dances or emotes or customization stuff), it's more atmosphere than godmodded toons.

If it wasn't for the trial, I'd never of played WoW.

I doubt the developers care about someone who hasn't bought a game in 3 years. Crawl back under your rock.

Free trials are nice but they are a decision that a dev has to make not a mandatory rule. some games are good enough that they don't offer trials until they have been out for months (even years) WoW and LotRO both did that and they are doing just fine.

It's their product, they can release it how they choose.

    I don't buy games that I haven't played and I won't subscribe to MMOs that I haven't tried.

    NO demo, no way!

The Hype-mo-chine ensures that on release you have a whole bunch of people buying the box and playing the first few weeks.

If you were to offer a free trial on release you'd have a bad all around release for everyone, full servers, over full starting areas.   in otherwords a buggy, laggy POS release even if the game works perfectly under high stress(just not extremely high stress) conditions.  (load requirments are essentially X2 for every person in one area x2+1.something is is likely more reasonable due to dropped/lost packets,  and this is for bandwidth alone.  that's theoretical you'll likely want to toss in a few more X's).

Essentially this is why you have no requirment(friend keys don't count) trials coming out 6 months to a year later, because the hype-mo-chine ensures that if you have your trial too soon after release you'll crowd out the starter areas.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I believe this trial call open beta or stress test, where they only need you to log in. Only one game I know didn't give out a free trial is Vanguard. What I believe they are waiting to release a trial for the game. so they can polish the game up.

i think we had this thread a little whiles ago, but my two cents on the issue again...

i dont like to go out a fancy restaurant and order a bottle of wine i've never tried before, without at least trying a glass of it first.

Why should i go and spend about the same on a game as a good bottle of wine, and be so disgusted with it that i cant even give it to the neighbor as a Christmas gift because of the CD KEY GODS say i cant

dev's will over-hype and over-hype a game, they all do it, every single one is guilty. Whats worse is when you get into beta and it sucks... then people start going on "well its just beta, it will get better" i hate to tell you this but its NOT GOING TO GET BETTER!! the only thing a beta is there to fix is bugs and performance issues. Whats the core of the game is not getting changed.

in short. no, i refuse to buy games anymore unless i'm in beta or a free trial.

Man I couldnt imagine being such a cheap @ss or so broke I couldnt even go out a buy a game that I wanted to try out.  I dont even waste my time with free trails I look up a game read the forums see if it has the aspects of a game I would enjoy and if it does I buy it and try it.  Never had a problem so far and I dont think I will.

I have to agree with most of the posters here in that, I want to try a game first or beta it before I buy it!

I don't agree on this point. I admit I have been disappointed in more than one MMORPG. However I always buy the game with the knowledge that the game could suck. But many games that are not MMORPG games don't have free trials either. Though I see the trend now to offer the trials more n more.

I have a copy of almost every major MMORPG that has come out over the past 10 years. The only ones I really get annoyed with is when some don't include that free month. At least when I buy a game, but have that free month I don't feel completely disappointed.

However...such is life. After all you don't get a free trial for much else in life...why should games be any different?

problem is tho is that people go out and spend money to not be pleased with a product that they cant return. If you consider me not wanting to blow my money on something i'm not going to be happy with and cant do anything about as a cheap ass, then yes, i am a cheap ass.

But then again, if you're willing to throw away money on a whim, i'm taking all donations.

The industry has a lot to answer for with some of the horrible, half-finished products that got send out to market. I know that I will not be paying for any mmo without being able to take test it first, be it trial or open beta.
