Best game for a beginner?

I am currently playing CoH (my first online game). I'm looking forward to trying another.

I'd like to choose from AC2, AO, FFXI and DAoC.  Which one would be best for a new gamer and why?

I would say CoH is best for a beginner. It is very simple, which was what turned me off of the game. No depth. Daoc is good, and not too hard to learn. I wouldnt suggest AO tho, as i hear it has a very high learning curve.

Dark Age of Camelot - 3 Years

I've played AO for a little over a week now and although fun, there is still a ton of stuff to learn. Wouldn't choose FF XI because I heard it is hard to find someone that speaks English. Never played DAoC. You can learn all the basic controls in AC2 in about 15 minutes and the newbie quests are designed to help learn about the game. Plus you don't have to choose what class you want to be until lvl 15. But, you better have a fairly current system for your pc. 512MB of ram at the very minimum or you will run into a lot of lag.

AC2 is the best game for a beginner.  The quests are fun and can pretty much be used to walk through levels 1-20, although you can choose to do other things.  The interface is easy to learn and character development starts out simple.  It gets more complicated when you get above 20 and start to really get into specializing.

CoH and AC2 are n00b friendly.

Whenever you want a cool mmorpg try AO, it has 7 day trial.

If you are still a newbie in the MMORPGs i recommend Asherons Call 2.

Just finished playing SWG after a year of playing...hate to say it but it is pretty muchn a beginner type game. Just stay nuetral and it will get you through all the beginner type stuff you need. Just don't take sides in that IMP v Reb war and you will be fine. There are a few nuetral guilds there that can be very helpful to someone learning the ropes...I'd steer you to my old guild on the corbantis server...they don't mind having a neutral in it, but it's an all wookiee guild.

DAOC or AC2..Very user friendly and most people there seem to be helpful

AC2 is very friendly for newbies image

Astonia was a real easy game to learn, but the people are not real friendly to the new(noobie) players.  The quest are not real heard until about the 30th level, there is a free 30 day trial, and 10 bucks the month to continue.

Like other people have stated, CoH is the best beginner game on the market right now. SWG can be OK for a while, but it grows old quickly. It depends if you are looking for a game thatwill be fun for a few months, or just a good game to get into the MMOG style of gaming.

DAOC is not very friendly to newbs (not the game itself, but all the playes w/ knowledge of the game are off fighting high lvl PvP and there is no one to ask for advice).

AO is probably the most complex of the bunch, but it also IMHO has the best community and a very helpful player base that will bend backwards to help out a newb (I know, I just started 3-4 weeks ago).

    My 2 cents anyway :)

Do they use some kind of game speak?

The worst game is Neocron, because every noob is asking the same questions and there is no faq or something that explains this problem.

Your best bet is to wait a bit longer and get one of the next gen of games like WoW or EQ2 or if you like long term PvP fun then wait for GW

City of Boredom... opps I mean City of Heros is the best MMO for a begginer.. Lots of Eye candy and FPS type game play (almost).. But huge lack of depth and could get boring quickly..

**Warning COH might cause Drowiness use CAUTION when operating Machinery**

AO, EVE, and SWG get my vote for having the biggest learning curve... These games just have so much stuff you can do in them.. Which is a good thing..

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

AO. then DAoC from your list!

I also recommend SWG if you do not mind playing in a Sci-Fi setting.

CoH is my first. I've just started some trials with AC2, DAoC, etc. and I have to say CoH has the lowest (if any) learning curve!

I'm starting to wonder if CoH can even qualify as a stepping stone to other MMORPGs...

I'm also playing CoH currently. I've played many Mmorpg's in the past including

    evercrap

    shattered galaxies

    Anarchy Online

Tried Eve but, the beggining is too complex for me, too much readin' etc..

IF I were you I'd keep playin' CoH untill WoW comes out

Guild Wars isnt out yet, and imo, cant be classified as an MMORPG. It's more a diablo-style game.

It's not hard to find an English-speaking player in FFXI. What's hard is gaining levels. It is not a newbie friendly game at all, and can be very unforgiving, however.

I also reccomend AC2, it's still incredibly easy to get into after all this time. You can run it with 256MB Ram if you have a good Video Card, but not with all the pretty features. It's worth mentioning that it is still the prettiest MMORPG that's out there.

Well, before any of us can actually guide someone usefully, we should ask what the fellow wants:

Do you want to fight other players or monsters and in what proportions?

Mostly large scale encounters, group or solo play?

Is social interaction important to you?  What kind?

Why do you/might you want to switch from CoH?

    Cheers, Nephtu

    Active MMOG(s): Everquest
    Tried: DAoC, AO, Shadowbane

Yes, I'm a smartass. Deal with it.

My point of reference is CoH

Monsters, haven't played other players (unless you mean something like Tekken).

Mostly large scale encounters, group or solo play?

Solo (easier to do than finding a team), then group. Haven't had large scale encounter (or intervention!image)

Is social interaction important to you?  What kind?

Based on the free trials I've just started, I'd like newbie-help social interaction. Some of these games make me feel like a tumbleweed in the desert...

Why do you/might you want to switch from CoH?

I've enjoyed CoH so much I want to try something else, and the grind has gotten boring so I want to try something else. I'll still play - just looking for something new.

    Cheers, Nephtu

    BTW Thanks everyone- helpful board!!!

AC2, SWG, and HZ, are the only 4th Generation MMORPGs out. And yes, the graphics in SWG are easily just as nice as the graphics in AC2. BTW, in the world of MMORPGs, graphics take a back seat to game features, and game mechanics. A MMORPG with dazzeling graphics, but dismal game features, and game mechanics dies in the long run. A MMORPG with dismal graphics, but nice game features and game mechanics will in the long run live. MMORPGs have an intended shelf life of 5 years - thus no matter how nice looking the graphics they will become outdated.

AC2 is friendly yes, but for solo-ability? Last time I was there, not the friendliest for solo playing. Thankfully, I had a group of RL life friends that played at that time too :) Now, in past year, not sure how much of that has changed. I am not overly fond of any game that has "forced" grouping. There are days where I just want to go out and explore, hunt, and search for the elusive dream piece of armor or weapons I may want.

Social interaction, easy learning curve, solo-ability, etc .. I still have to say the old game of AC1 hands down for those type of things. On the upside, expansion coming out end of year. Downside, it does not have the "pretty" graphics but does have a great game play to it.

On the downside, waiting to see how far Turbine goes against 3rd party apps in the expansion as well.

Left SWG, FFXI, Horizons, etc after about 2 months for each one. Eye candy alone wasn't enough to keep me.

Now, keeping close eye on Ryzom, since they say updates often too.
