AoC = fail?

i dont know about you guys..maybe im just too old school but when you throw in special combo moves in a MMORPG like Mortal Combat .... i score that as a >FAIL< ...i can see it now..tons of people running around with programs set to run combo moves just like the old video game controllers for xbox lol {you remeber tha ol'program your moves to play controllers and sit there and watch radin kik ass without doing anything as the other player is scratching his head like..wtf? as he's dead in 5 secs } i see this game looking great and nothing else for the real mmo players out there...AoC < imo > = fail ..and just add this one to the stack of mmo's that have had recently been released that are crap / look great and  are too busy trying to keep up with w.o.w and the ever growing community of 6-14yr olds that play it.

Congrats of your first post, but you know you have it very wrong. Let me explain why.

To activate a combo you can press the key for it say 1-8, then the combat rose highlights a yellow marker for few seconds, you have to either click the yellow marker or press your direction (Q,1,2,3,E), when you either click or press your corresponding direction the next direction lights up guiding you to press or click the next one and so on till you have performed your combo. =)

If you know the correct order you can just do you (q,1,2,3,e) directions (or whatever keys you have mapped) and pull it off if you know it. (no initiating click or button press for related combo on hotbar)

So you actually have to do it, step by step and its not 1 button click combo = done.

Combo's start with different directions, so say you might have hotbar selections 1-4 and left leaders and 5+6 as overhead and 7+8 as right leaders so your ever changing depending on your opponents shields (dynamic)

You see AoC goes back to basics, it gets rid of AUTO ATTACK, no lock on, you have to face your opponent, doesnt matter if someone does a macro, you still have to face the right direction to hit something, and to have a macro in that regard is no different than you or I pressing the buttons. The program / macro what ever you want to call it can't tell where the player is on screen. You have to visually look. So no leaving your PC to farm / sit there watch / whatever. It won't work.

Opponents have visual indicators for shielding they have (Like dependant on their stance and your direction of attack) some are stronger on say one side more than the other. If your being attacked from the right side you move around and therefore stop the attacker hitting your right. Shields on enemies work just the same you start beating on the left of a monster, that monster will shift its shields over to that side - its dynamic - ever changing.

There is no set program the moves and it will work everytime.

Every attack you do is in REAL TIME, your defense is based on the game engine too.

Try watching this too: http://www.stage6.com/user/AcolyteAvery/video/1953748/Age-of-Conan-Visual-FAQ-Guide   Its a video guide, so you can pause to read. The combat part is still valid.

I hope you see that now.

Anyway hope that helps. It might sound complicated but its pretty easy to get to grips with. Just have to keep an eye on the shields of the foe.

Never mind he fixed it... disregard this.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I think what's gonna ruin it for me is the nipple removal.  more nipples in MMORPGS please

It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.

What can I say, I was attracted by this troll-ish thread title.

The OP has a valid concern, ie. how will an untested combat system fare in the test of time. A bit unfortunate that he choose a bad way to express it.

The answer is simple, we won't know unless we play it. And even then we won't know. Some things grow on us over time or we tend to hate them as time passes by. No real way to tell at this point.

Bottom line, if somebody doesn't brave to change things (even so slightly), we'll only get the currently default mechanics in everything we play now and into the future. Is this what we want?

In my opinion AoC combat system can be a complete succesfull or a complete fail, we need to wait and see.

  • Psiho246Psiho246 Member Posts: 482

AoC combat system is unique, and thats the reason why AoC should succed, not fail.

This is a pointless DOOMSDAY!!!! thread....move on nothing to see here

A squared wheel would be unique, also. Don't jump in conclussions just cause it has the "brand new" label on the hype meters.

It certainly breaks a path from what's considered standard in melee fight. I'm yet uncertain on how ranged or magic combat will play. How pet classes will be handled in the game. How healing, my favourite activity, will be implemented.

    Time will tell.

..Healing will also be positional so lets say your group member got poisoned and after removing the barb you will have to administer a healing herb enema, so you actually get behind your friend, undo his pants and.."

Do I still have to look at the screen during combat because it sounds like that will be a distraction from performing my combos.

I dont think AoC= Fail, perhaps it will not have the success as some expected, but will not fail... is better a lot (at least already saw on tests) than games like lord of the rings, and this last succeded been (for me) a copy of wow... this is a personal point of view with no flame on it, just an opinion.

Because I am too lazy, I'll ask this here since someone already talked about the 'no auto attack' in this thread...

What are they doing about people with a slow or laggy connection?  I mean, if there is no auto attack, then if you are slowed down you can't be reacting to oponents or even attacking as often as you should be...  On the surface, that sounds like a bad idea.

There is queue for your actions.

So if I lag spike and haven't queue'd commands, I just stand around and let the opponent beat me down?

    I surely hope so.

Is there an alternative I'm not aware of?

No, the game pops up a message that yells "time out" until you are ready to continue pvp'ing......  :P
