Hi, i had a few questions as im thinking about picking LOTRO up
1. Is this a feasible game for the casual player? I dont have more then 1 or 2 hours a night during the week, am i doomed to stay at lower levels forever?
2. Is this a WoW clone? I'm coming from WoW and im looking for something just a little more complex and mature that will keep the 13 year olds away
Comments
1. It's definitely casual friendly. In fact, most people classify it as a casual MMO. It may take you a while to get higher level, but the gameplay doesn't really change dramatically as you level up. You just get to explore new areas.
2. The gameplay is very much like WoW, but in general, the community is a lot more mature. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of mature people in WoW, or immature people in LoTRO, but the average maturity level is much higher. I recommend Landroval as a server if you're looking for a mature community.
If you're unsure about whether to buy it, just give the trial a shot and try to get as far along as you can.

I am a very new player to LOTRO (Began last week) and have been a WoW player since testing, so I'd like to offer this player's perspective to your questions.
1.) Absolutely. Although I do consider myself a "power gamer" when I do play, I cannot play every day nor can I play hours on end on many days. This game feels like I got something done with the time I spend in it. I can focus on one thing to do per play session: Work on obtaining a new trait, exploring a new area, leveling up some of my crafting skills, work on the leveling of my character, make some money on the auction house, etc. I really feel like my time within the game is time very well spent and not "wasted" in the least.
2.) Absolutely not! I have to say that some of the things LOTRO does really shocked me and set it apart from other MMOs that I play. Here is my little list of uniqueness in the game:
a.) Monster Play (PVP). This is just a blast! For someone who wasn't big on PVP with other games, this is actually very fun!
b.) Music! Your character doesn't actually just /emote and /play generic music in the game; there is an entire music system within the game! You can 'write' your own music or play some famous music you already love with your character.
c.) Traits system. OK this part I absolutely love about the game. I am an explorer by heart. This game actually rewards you for some of those 'weird' things you do. Like wanting to uncover/discover all of a particular zone. Or using a certain skill a number of times. And slaying a number of a particular creature...etc. The game rewards you for your actions through traits that you can slot to enhance your character - Similar to how WoW allows you to customize your character with talents.
d.) Community. I cannot stress this one enough: Overall the community, on the forums and in the game, is the most mature and absolutely most helpful I have ever encountered in all my time of playing MMOs. Period. I was absolutely shocked and it took me a while to get used to it - I mean, who would have thought, I don't see anyone typing in public channels in numbers or cool dude talk; complete sentences, wow!
e.) Environment and attention to detail is some of the best I have laid eyes on for an MMO. If you've got an awesome game rig, then you will probably be floored at the graphics. My system is going on five years old now and I am absolutely amazed by the beauty and graphics on my system (with the settings turned to medium). You walk around the towns, or the zones, or even look at the gear on characters and everywhere you look you can see painstaking attention to detail and patience. I am very pleasantly surprised on this one.
f.) The story! Every quest you do has a purpose. Yes, even those "kill xx wolves for us" quests. Just read the text and you will actually feel like you are doing it for a cause/reason - Not just busy work that is totally insignificant.
g.) Life. From the little creatures that roam the wild and harm nothing to the absolute abundance of townfolk and casual conversations that take place among NPCs, the game is just alive. Everywhere you turn you see life and the world feels like it goes on with or without your involvement - i.e. feels real.
Anyways, that is my perspective. Goodluck with whatever you decide!
I'm getting a pretty good vibe about the game, so ive got another question, and this one is kind of dumb but..
Does the purchase of the game come with one month of play time or does a subscription have to purchased seperatly from the get go?

LOL....that's quite a lot of very specific detail from someone who has only played for a week. This game is the definition of a WoW clone. Not sure though why that carries such a negative connotation as WoW is an excellent game.
As for maturity, comparing it to WoW really isn't fair. There are abou 8 1/2 million more people playing WoW so you are definitely going to have more immature idiots playing WoW at this point.
(at least, not paying any attention if doing so at any time)

I LOL'ed at your LOL
The maturity of the players absolutely floored me as well. I have been playing since December and I have only run across one group who I considered idiots. Other than that people have always been friendly, even when a boss has been "ninja'ed" the other group has stuck around to assist in killing it. The advice channel actually has advice and not insults being given. The kinship I am in quickly became supportive of me assisting me when they could and providing info when they could not.
Still have a lot of fun playing at lvl 44 after two months (actual time, not game time).

Yes, also if you are refered by a funder you can access to a discount of $5 per month ($10 montly fee) or $199 lifetime!
From what you wrote. LOTRO is perfect for you!
1. Yes yes and yes - LOTRO is heaven for player that has only 1-2 hours daily. Actually the main complaint about LOTRO is from people that play heavy hours and burn trough content. You will be in better position
2. Majority of LOTRO players (at least on my server) are married people with kids. Everyone is friendly and helpfull. The game is not more complex than WOW. About the same level. But story , and immersion is way higher
1. Mostly. Depends if you want to group/solo/what you want to do in this game. To do the main storyline you're going to be grouping up most of the time. There are plenty solo quests outside that though yet there are group quests.
Crafting components can be required by other professions or elite mosters (requiring a group unless you're way over there level) to advance your own. You can buy those on the AH unless you have friends who will aid ya on that.
At least it was that way when I crafted that year and doubt that changed.
2. It's a good community like others here have said. I know for sure it is on Gladden. I've helped others there that's for sure.
Aye you get a free month when you snag the box.
Err Edit: That group content is still casual group content. Thought I'd owe a clear up there.

Yes, you get a free month when you buy the box, but, as with all MMO's, you have to set up your subscription from the get go. They just don't charge you for that first month.
As for if the game is a WoW clone or not, that really depends on what you consider a WoW clone. Does LotRO have quests, combat where you click different skills to fight, levels to raise, etc.? Yes. So do a lot of games out there. WoW's not even the first to do it. All that started back with EQ so in that respect I suppose WoW is an EQ clone.
However, the game does not feel like WoW. At least it didn't to me when I played. There will always be some commonalities between games, but there are also always things to set them apart from each other. Overall I think LotRO is a good game even though I don't play it anymore. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a decent game to play that doesn't require making it a second job in order to progress.
