If Taram speaks up then you've got unbiased... Me, I think EVE > All and anyone who disagrees should be destroyed...
Is the 14 day trial enough time to get a feel for EVE? I can only play maybe 2 hrs/day tops.
It is more than enough. After day 2 you will be so bored out of your mind you will quit Eve. Eve is a very unique game but it is the most boring thing you can do with a computer. You might as well "play" creating Microsoft spreadsheets or something because that activity is more fun than Eve.
Granted I only have limited beta experience in POTBS but I will say this.
If you only have a small amount of play time per day per week... then EvE is strongly catered to you with their Skill system.
You gain skills at a fixed rate online or offline. So if you and johny highschooler start the same day he plays 20 hours a day and you play 2 you will progress SKILL wise at the same rate.
Now, the only grind eve really has is the money grind. You need money for everything. However... its really not that hard to make cash. Its a bit tedious at times, and certainly as a new player your options will be limited, but after 2 months or so of play you can make a few hundred million a week easily.
If you dig player run economies, skill systems over leveling, fleshed out trade/crafting environments, dynamic land control, and the ability to actually affect your gaming world... Id say eve hands down.
Try to find a decent sized corp that accepts trial characters if you do try the trial. I did the EVE thing 3 times attempting to solo and quit each time before I tried the corp thing out, makes all the difference in the world. (imo)
"almost an EVE lite" -- yes i agree 100.. based on crafting and market.
while the game deos differ alot in alot of ways eve is more of a mature hard core game.. Potbs has a complex crafting system and semi complex market all player run.
Crafting: 0-10 (based on how complex)
WOW- 4 (any 10 year old can master it)
SWG- 8 (one higher then potbs due to materials having quality as well as complex craft requirments)
Botbs - 7 (complex crafting due to materials needing different buildings to construct and only 10 building alowed).
EVE - 10 (number of items to craft far greater then any game over 5000 types of items to craft with. some are only able to be harvested buy elite players (corperations and alliances) in very dangers areas. also some items are next to imposable to craft buy a single person (eg titans) which are muilt billion $ projects
Market 0-10 (based on how complex and how easy to use)
WOW - 5 (not much to it and easy to use)
SWG - 5 (not much to it and easy to use)
Botbs - 7 (easy to use but due to differrent areas having different resources and different markets and the fact that you DONT see the prices that items are listed AT but what they are last sold at. makes the system i little harder to use. but also can help you make more money or lose money if you dont know what items are worth).
EVE - 10 with stock market like charts to watch price points of all in game objects on the market dating back form yesterday to last year the market in the game is very complex and alot like a basic real comodites exchance market. The market in EVE like in POTBS are split into different areas and they all have different prices for some items. you can however see all items exact prices and even sort them cost.
As for combat POTBS has 2 types of combat EVE is ONLY SHIP TO SHIP. thats 1 up for POTBS. as in EVE you cant even leave your ships (one at a time many types).
Differences in game play:
POTBS has a story ark that you can play.. and missions that are story driven.
EVE has no such mission types. they all have a story in the sence they tell you what you are about to kill or haul or mine ect. (but no persistant story ark that you follow) in EVE. YOU have to MAKE or NOT make the story and hence this is the reason why you get a HATE or LOVE split in the people who try EVE.
personaly i play EVE and have so for 2 years.. and in that time i have also taken breaks from the game some times for a month or more (although i still pay and skill in that time) i like the game for it complexity and politics in dealing with the taking of territorys in EVE. Somthing about knowing you distroyed some poor guys POS (starbase) or taking there outpost after destroying there POS's (1-10 or more of them) and inflicting a loss of billions or even trillions of isk (EVE gold). loss in EVE like POTBS is harsh even more so in EVE.. in POTBS when you lose a ship so many times its gone and you have to buy or build a new one. in EVE every ship you lose is lost right away. and anything you build in game can be destroyed or taken from you in areas know as 0.0 space (or the TOTAL PVP areas).
PVP:
POTBS has territory as does EVE, players fight for control of the areas and claim them. so they are similer in that respect. with differences to how it is done but all in all the same basic idea. although the complexity of EVE's version of territories if greater. (thats not alwase a good thing and would be up to you to judge which is better).
personally i like POTBS system better because its easy and it can be done solo. in EVE taking a system solo is NOT possable in any way.
1 VS 1 - same idea in both games. although tatical combat the POSBS is more hands on and real time. VS in EVE its more about ship type and seting up your ships mods and equipment. the outcome of a battle is more based on ship setup then skill. not to say skill has nothing to do this it. but in BOTBS somone who is totally out gunned in ship type CAN make up for it in real time with thinking his way through a battle ALOT easer then in EVE.
Few VS Few - standard pvp max for POTBS is 6 (not including port attacks which are more) (at this time). so large scale pvp is limited in POTBS in EVE its not limited at all.. In EVE i have been in battles for POS (and outposts where we had fights that numbered 250(us) 340(them) in the same system and in one fight. (if you can call it that mostly it was LAG... lucky if you get a few shots off and die from who knows what) OR LAG and kill many many other players if you are lucky!!
Battles in ports for POTBS are short. maybe 2 hours to get contention. and then after the timer final battles for the port is about 2 hours to 10 minutes as i have seen so far.
Battles for POS take hours to complete. and outposts can take hours or weeks to clame a outpost. or even months in rare cases when the fighting is back and forth fight. so claiming a system in EVE is alot more complex. also in POTBS a group of say 6 people can turn a port solo.. if there is alot of action going on in the map(or no action at all). in EVE to take out an outpost with 6 guys is NOT possable.
Over all i hope this helps..if you like POTBS in beta there is hope for you to like EVE as well but is only hope my idea would be for you to play POTBS for a few months and if you want more complex move to EVE after and see if you can handle it.. as its not a instant action game. NOT a game for everyone (MOST of the people who play EVE are over the age of 23 and some in my corp/alliance are in there late 40's teens are almost none existant in EVE and tweens 10-16 are almost 0. YOU really are in control. or NOT in control of the game. you can be anything from a solo miner while watching TV or listing to music while you look around the market. to the owner of a alliance that is at war all day everydayand fight for contol of you 30 star systems(or more). its all in how you play it.
As for me i play both now and will take a break from EVE to play POTBS (but i will also skill in EVE) so that when i come back in im more advanced. but i like the style and some of the similar aspects of POTBS mostly crafting and market and the fact that PVP in game forces you to think about pvp with wind direction ammo types and ship types and numbers. and its all on the fly.
Also one other thing to note. EVE has only ONE server. so all 250,000 people are playing together. where as POTBS there will be multiple servers with pop's of around 5,000 each from what i have gathered.
another side note in EVE there are system that have had more then 700 people in the same spot (market hubs like Jita(starsystem) and the game still runs with a bit of lag.. but is still playable (not all in combat) and that on its own is impressive. no other game does that. and no other game has servers as advanced as EVE. most of there market systems are run on RAM drives and are only backed up on HDD's
Impressive post futchmacht! Even since I only plan playing PoTBS now, I've been into EVE for a while, back and forth. Personally I really liked the sandbox but didn't like the "money grind". Hopefully a mix with both sandbox play and player run economy with all that it means in risk taking will be a winner for PoTBS!
Your comparison made it much more clear to me and on the points on crafting you pointed out, I think you are pretty spot on!
I'm considering picking up a new MMO, and I've really enjoyed playing the PotBS beta, but I've heard that it is very similar to EVE in game mechanics, almost an EVE lite in some ways. Is this accurate? Is it likely that I'd enjoy EVE even more? PotBS suits my playstyle pretty well, but there are some things about it that I don't like. Most of them have to do with the avatar combat, but I would rather have crappy avatar combat than none at all. My favorite MMOs I've played so far are UO and lineage 2. I'd still be playing L2 but I don't have time for THAT much grinding anymore. Although I enjoy the polished feel of WoW, I really disliked the game mechanics, namely the heavy restrictions/lack of incentive for PvP and the lack of anything to do other than questing all the time. What do you guys think?
It's kind of like asking if a vegetarian would enjoy meat. They are so funadmentally different in gameplay, style, graphics, content, storyline, lore, playerbase, community and developer that you really can't compare them at all other than they share two words: ship and game.
I would always recommend every gamer try every game out there when they get a free-trial opportunity, it will either introduce you into a game you may enjoy more or it will remind you why you enjoy the game you are playing more - both yielding a positive outcome.
The one thing you must steer clear of though is comparing a game in beta to a game's free-trial. Free-trials are typically given to the public once the developers have reached a certain stability in their codebase, whereas a beta is a vehicle to help them get to that stability.
Try them both - as you point out, it's free to play EVE for 14 days, be don't compare them so closely yet, PotBS isn't even released yet.

Is the 14 day trial enough time to get a feel for EVE? I can only play maybe 2 hrs/day tops.
I got a feel of the game within 3 hours.
Within 3 days I had a really nice ship.
Another day later I was in a really nice corp, and got like 5M ISK for free (Yeah, they just... handed it to me )
Another day later I was in 0.0 killing pirates with my corp.
Next day I was participating in a kinda small fun PvP battle.
So yeah, its more than enough
EDIT: also PotBS is VERY different from EVE from what I saw (played PotBS in closed beta)
in potbs u position your ship and then fire, in eve its pretty much just target it then shoot (though theres lots and lots of goodies, like u can stop ur enemy from targeting you etc)
as for PvP, I liked EVE much much better.
EVE is a seemless world, I hated potbs's instancing.
So what I say is... If you liked a lesser game, you'd definately like EVE better.
Give the 14-day free trial a shot, and remember to join the EVE University as soon as you enter the game. Its a great corp for beginners.
Play both for a bit and see which you prefer. IMO it's best to do a 14 day trial of EVE then chuck out 19.95 and try it for 1 more month (19.95 is purchase price and includes 30 days of play) to really get a feel for it. 14 days is enough for some but most people don't really 'get' EVE within the free trial period.
IMO EVE is far superior to PotBS. PotBS has it's charm but it's just missing something at this point. Just my opinion.

I used to be fascinated by the idea of EvE, and really fell for the "it's a casual game" argument about the skillset being able to train while offline.
Yet all they did was replace one form of grind with another. In EvE it's the money grind, which is near horrendous until you have the skill set to be able to better enhance your mining/market/ratting ability, which can take months.
Pirates is alot more casual friendly in the fact that you can be a solo marketeer/hunter(pirate/privateer) and still make a decent impact on the world. Granted, you can't take a port by yourself, but you can build high end ships yourself, albiet in a decent amount of time. Also, the PvP in Pirates is alot more accessable, whereas in EvE you rarely have "good fights" but in EvE everytime I got killed it was either a gate camp or a dock camp.
If you like creating your own story EvE offers alot more oppurtunities for that, but I know that Pirates has plans in developement for such oppurtunities as well.
Also, remember that EvE has been out for four years, whereas Pirates isn't even released yet. I strongly believe that once pirates hits the 4 year mark that it will be much better than EvE. Heck playing EvE at launch was like trying to watch a pregnant cow run through a forest, it was the most frustrating game I ever played (at the time).
In short they are both unique, and vastly different at the same time, with each of them appealing to their respectable player base.
Avatars are soon coming. You will be able to exit your ship.
Even in EVE's "safe" zones you "can" attack someone. You will however get destroyed by NPC police. You still however can suicide kill someone. Eve's unsafe pvp with risk is BY FAR the best in any mmo out. When you blow your ship goes pop. All gear on the ship goes pop or is dropped as loot. You do have available insurance, but for the higher tech ships it don't cover much and don't cover moduals ship was using.
EVE is a TOTALLY different game once you join a player corp. You don't really experience EVE in mission running NPC starter corp. EVE is true in the sense of being a Massive Multiplayer.
There are corps to suit everyone. Role players, drunks, pirates, you name it. A good corp to start with is EVE UNIVERSITY. They can help you learn the game. Give you a leg up before sending you into the vast cold space.
EVE is a HUGE universe. Much bigger then any mmo out there.
Skills in EVE are time based. You can quicken them with your attributes, and items. You set the skill and it trains itself. NO SKILL GRIND. You don't need to be logged in for skill to train. Just to Switch to the next skill. Only grind is cash, but cash is easy to get and many different ways to make it.
EVE has longevity. It has been around for years and has upgraded to the point of a whole new graphics engine. It has a very strong future. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME. As I played Star Wars Galaxies and had much of my time ruined by a company that stripped everything the game was away.
EVE is not the same game for everyone. Some like small pirate gangs, some never get into combat, some are Generals in massive wars.
It is an aquired taste. Don't start EVE in the mindset of any other game. Make sure to follow the tutor and look up EVE UNIVERSITY to start as a player corp.
The 14 Day Free Trial is more than enough time to figure out if EVE is the right game for you. I personally loled and uninstalled after about five days but hey, different strokes.
Think of the 14 day trial as sort of an aptitude or IQ test. If you keep playing then you've passed, or you get what we have right here.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care? Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Yes it is an IQ test.
Are you dumb enough to think EvE is a good game and that it rates you actually paying real money to grind through its boring and monotonous gameplay?
I passed. (the test and on the game)
Good thing there is a trial or I would have wasted $15.
I played EvE for a few months, got into a nice corp, moved next to 0.0 space. It was fun. The biggest difference to me is in the ship combat. In EvE, you outfit your ship, and when you attack, you basically are on autopilot. You typically try to orbit your enemy at the best distance for your equipment, and blast away. PoTBS has wind, meaning you need to actually STEER your ship, and plan your moves with the wind in mind. This sailing mentality makes PoTBS more fun to me.
They are both skill based, in the sense that your ship is way more important than anything else. In both games, levelling a skill allows you to use larger and better ships. And in both games, if you are still in the beginner ship, it doesn't matter too much what your level or skill is, you will die
Both have the concept of PvP areas, or zones, although in PoTBS these are player made and move around a lot. EvE is more rigid, with fixed "safe" areas, and fixed "0.0 security" areas.
Both have the economic aspects of auctions, moving stuff between auctions for profit, harvesting materials, and constructing ships. EvE is more elaborate.
The look and feel of EvE is very cold, and computerish. You don't see people, plants, or any other living things. PoTBS is more alive, with animals, water, beaches, people, etc.
Try them both, and report back to us what you think

Eve is far from boring. It is the most engaging and game I have ever played in my life. What you can do is non stop and ever changing with the story being created by the players themselves. You would not believe the drama in the game and it is all player created. The catch though is few experience this right away. Most of the better corps wont accept you unless you have 6 months of experience. The more elite corps expect 1 year of experience (and you can't grind your way up).
Now Eve realizes this and have been making lots of changes to make it easier for 'noobs' to catch up with some pretty new badass ships that require little experience (Electronic Attack ships) and starting players out with more skill points.
Another interesting thing in the game is there is only one server/instance and everyone is on it so it feels like one big huge universe.
If you only have 2 hours a day the game might not be for you as you have fleet battles and roaming gangs which can last much longer then that.
The irony of this thread is I was here looking to see the reviews to see if I should try the game. Since people say it is like Eve Lite I really want to try this game out now.

Hmmm......the fact that you think an IQ test is something that you pass or fail pretty much speaks for itself here.
Ooh an Eve thread, so I can post what was on my mind!
One element that I'm very happy POBS got form eve is how RL time affects gameplay. In Eve, you learn skills by setting them to train and waiting RL hours for them to finish. Some skills take several days or more to learn. In POBS, you craft by creating structures. These structures take usually an hour to "build" and afterwards produce RL man-hours. So, last night I built a tar distiller. After clicking "build", it finished in about an hour, and started the timer towards accumulating labor hours. By the time I get home from work I should have about 16 hours of labor built up, so I can create four batches of wood tar (since one batch requires four labor hours). There is no possibility of failure at this process; it only requires actual time to build up labor hours.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
As with any time you ask for an opinion on a game, you're going to see people who think it's the best thing since sliced bread and those who think it's just a step up from death by Ebola. Like they said earlier, try it out for free and see what you think.
Speaking as someone who retired a 20-odd million skillpoint character when I quit, I have mixed feelings.
When I was first introduced to Eve it seemed like the most amazing MMO I'd ever seen. The world is beyond massive; even with all my time playing there are still whole regions I didn't explore. The players are given a very free hand to help, hurt, carjack and swindle each other, which had a strong appeal to my dark side. You can carve out and invest in many different kinds of virtual lives, and I tried a few: honest miner, righteous Navy defender, corporate extorter and ore thief in secure space, and pure blackhearted, evil piracy in unsecured space. If you're the type who enjoys fiddling with gear you can spend whole days tweaking the loadout of your ship(s) and experimenting with different fittings. If you're the type who wants to build a cutthroat merchant empire, you can do that too. Every aspect of space is dangerous and loss is very real. These were all impressive and incredible aspects of the game.
Then one day I realized that when you strip away the setting and look at actual combat itself, I was bored out of my skull. You turn on the guns and they fire themselves. You click the 'orbit target' button and the computer flies for you. In a small ship like an interceptor the only thing I was really doing was toggling on and off special-purpose modules like warp scramblers (prevents people from warping away) or webbers (electromagic flypaper so they can't crawl away). In a big battleship my only real concern was to maintain my defensive systems (read: click "repair armor" button every X seconds) while my ship's computer fought the battle. There's no maneuvering for weak sides in shields or armor, so a lot of times you just end up sitting there, occasionally clicking at each other.
Eve is like a giant funnel: At the wide end you have a massive amount of skills, ships and equipment to consider. Intrigue and danger lurk behind every rock, empires rise and fall, and fortunes are made, lost and stolen. At the narrow end, those things are compressed down into a handful of clicks so that the computer can play with itself. Truly, most battles are won in spacedock and with the decision to engage or not engage; not during combat itself. The actual combat plays out like a simulation of a simulation. You make a lot of choices leading up to that moment, but then in that moment you watch as the numbers crunch themselves into the expected outcome.
This works for a lot of people, either because the rest of the game is so rich -- which it is -- and/or because that kind of combat appeals to them. But after playing for some time I decided it just wasn't fun enough for me.
POTBS swims in the shallow end of Eve's gene pool when it comes to the richness of the universe. There are similarities but the equivalent mechanics are light by comparison. On the other hand you actually have to maneuver your ship to fight effectively, and even if the "avatar combat" is clunky you do at least have the option of sticking the enemy captain with a sword.
I'm sticking with the suggestion that you try it and see for yourself what you think of the game.
Good points, Stealth. I wonder if EVE will consider removing that auto orbit button, thus making it more interactive. Also, I don't think Eve had positional hp or shields or weapons. Basically, regardless of your facing, your weapons could still hit the target if it was in range, and when you took hits it was just to your "general hp and structure" slot; you never had the option of "keeping your weakened starboard armor" away from the enemey. It wouldn't matter if you got behind your enemy in Eve, since there isn't "that weak aft armor" like there is in POBS. Also, boarding wasn't an option.
Would be cool if EVE implementing similar combat mechanics.
It's been years since I've played EVE, so please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
To be fair, sometimes there is some maneuvering to be done if you want to make the most of your To-Hit% with direct fire weapons. A gun has a "tracking speed" which is its ability to keep up with the position of the target as it moves across its field of view, which means that battleships spend a lot of time missing the little gnats that swarm around it at close range and high speed. I suppose it promotes group combat, where smaller ships protect bigger ones.
Still, when it's two ships of equivalent size duking it out you mostly just sit there while the numbers crunch. There's no "turning fight" to get at weak shields or armor because shields and armor are bubbles, not sides. 50% shields is 50% shields no matter where you're facing.

All I can tell you is to play both.
Remember a couple notes on EVE.

It is more than enough. After day 2 you will be so bored out of your mind you will quit Eve. Eve is a very unique game but it is the most boring thing you can do with a computer. You might as well "play" creating Microsoft spreadsheets or something because that activity is more fun than Eve.
Think of the 14 day trial as sort of an aptitude or IQ test. If you keep playing then you've passed, or you get what we have right here.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Are you dumb enough to think EvE is a good game and that it rates you actually paying real money to grind through its boring and monotonous gameplay?
I passed. (the test and on the game)
Good thing there is a trial or I would have wasted $15.
Great post futchmacht, one of the best comparisons of games I'v seen on these fourms.

In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

You're not mistaken.
