Hmmm...didn't take long to start the EQ2 vs Vanguard battle I see. Two different games going for two different players styles people. One is going casual and the other is hardcore.
I think the game looks great and I like a lot of the concepts the developers have talked about and shown on their website. Also, almost all of their staff have a lot of experience with this type of a game so they know their stuff. The only thing that I'm worried about is the release date. In a PCGamer two months ago it showed the game and said the release date so far is 2006. By then who knows what kind of interesting games will be on the way or how dated the graphics will look to us then.
Currently: Alpha: Guild Wars Playing: City of Heroes Interested: WOW & EQII (yeah, both... deal with it)
Also remember that the screenshots you are seeing of Vanguard now are from an early pre-alpha stage. We've heard that the next screenshots will show quite a bit of improvement. They are using a modded version of the unreal engine, and I think the graphics will be awsome. I think PCgamer's guess on release might be a little off, my money is on late 2005.
Honestly the state of the market today with so much competition I dont see it wise to even wait or be excited about a game until the official release date is posted from the CO. and beta is over. There have been many cancellations of games and this one would not surprise me.
This game is marketed as a 3rd gen game meanging basically it will learn from EQ2 and WoW and ultimately be better. So first you really cant compare the two, well you can but they want you to believe it will be obviosly better just because of when it will be released.
This game wont be released until like 2005 or beginging of 2006. They say they will upgrade the gfx as time goes on but that is a problem all companys have in trying to make a game revolutionary to keep up with the times.
From what research I have done of the game, they are going back to grass roots in MMO's which is nice to here. This game is not for carebears. Honestly I think most 2nd gen games, (EQ2, WoW) are carebear games, meaning, they listened to the whiners and the whiners won with quick fixes.
I am more excited about Vanguard and the next gen of games, not the 2nd gen but the 3rd.
So if I can give any advice I would not follow a game so intently when its this far off. Many things can happen. Who knows!, maybe Microsoft will only port it to Xbox and then we will never see it again. Would not surprise me none.

It is Microsoft's showcase XNA game. I would be really surprised to see it canceled, and there is no way it will only be on the X-Box since that defeats the purpose of creating it with XNA.
Both WoW and EQ2 seem to be gearing more towards the casual audience. I mean, in WoW right now, it takes only 10-12 days played to hit level 50.. 60 will be the final level cap, so prolly add a few more days onto there. Blizzard has said that they may slow it down a little bit, but nothing dramatic, as they figure people will enjoy leveling alts.
So Vanguard may steal away some hardcore players from those two games, but I'm kinda doubting it. Any truely hardcore players will have probably moved on to something else before Vanguard is finally released in 2006 or whatever.

Vanguard will be the game the true hardcore players will be looking for. And I am not just talking about hardcore in those that play a lot, but those who like their games challenging. It will be THE game when it comes out much in the same way EQ2 and WOW are THE games coming out this year.
It won't 'kill' EQ2 anymore than DAoC, or any of the other EQ killers even scratched EQ. Given it's coming out about a year after EQ2/WoW it will draw the hardcore players from those two, who will most likely have torn through all the content by then. Especially since Vanguard is being developed by Brad, and a fair number of the original EQ team, and hopefully they stick to their guns and don't dumb the game down to the point that later devs did with EQ Live.

Yea, if they stick to their guns and the vision they want for this game it will be a good game that will offer up some challenging gameplay. Alot of the people working on it miss the early days of EQ when stuff was just brutal. Lost all your stuff because you were a dumbass and ran into that cave of goblins? Tough!
But at the same time, they are building a really huge world. So no, its not going to kill EQ or any game out there just as the previous poster said. Everyone was predicting DAOC was going to kill EQ, it didn't. Although I did leave EQ to go play it lol. Ive been watching this game for awhile now, and all I can say is Im excited for it to get into Beta!
This game won't be coming out for a couple of years. Its pointless to argue which game is better now.

Do you relize how much a year can affect? I doubt that there will be much people who will switch from Eq2 to Vanguard, they will have been with their characters a while, know alot of people in-game, and are still having loads of fun, did many people switch from Eq1 when others came out......not really.

Yep, a year can change a lot of things. Just look at SWG. It is just over a year old and the combat revamp is being delayed once again, this time in order to soak more money out of their customers. Of course, I can't say EQ2 will be another SWG (hope it isn't), but I can't say it won't be either.

www.vanguardsagaofheroes.com for info, swing by the offical board if you have any questions.
Vanguard will be hardcore, EQ2 will be more casual. Vanguard could really hammer EQ and it will probably hit WoW harder than it hits EQ2.
www.okratas.com has a few screen shots. But I believe Vanguard will cater to both casual and hardcore gamers.
Those screenshots look pretty damned good, i'll have to keep an eye on this one.

No.
EQ2 can commit suicide alone, they dont need any help to died! *grin*
And if EQ2 dont commit suicide, this game wont kill it either.
Yet, I would wage on EQ2 committing suicide alone.
