Ahh where to begin. I dont really know where i should start this off. Youll have to forgive the new account as ive been a member here since 03 ..... I just cant seem to remember all of the several accounts ive had over the years. So to start off i guess does anyone remember that little quote? It was on the box when i first bought eq 3 days after it released. It always made me feel squishy inside.....eh hem, anyway i was just scrolling over the topics as i do every few months or so. I keep reading every time i come back to this forum people reminicing about the good old times.
Things that people bring up in the topics i had completely forgotten, other things are still fresh in my mind, and yet still have memories of my own from this game and many other, but mostly the best ones were from this one. I dont know if it is the almost 8 years of play, avidly up until SOL on and off after that. I see people going on about there first vox or naggy raids, there first run from queynos to freeport, hell even there first boat ride. I dont really know what it was about this game that influienced so many people so greatly for good or ill , but i dont know i was 1 of them. Even though this wasnt the first online game i played as that title belongs with UO, i do know it was the first 3D ( and trust me that was a feat back in 99 ) game i played online.
I guess if you gave it a fair shake you could say that EQ was the basis for all modern MMORPGs, if modern is what you can call the half of them. You see that little link at the top of the page that says Game List? Well if you click on that and bring up the page under all of those games that have released over the years i can probably count the ones i "havent" played on my fingers. Yet how ever many differnt games i play i stil feel "empty" compaired to when i was an 3 4 hour a day player of eq.
I mean lets be honest here i used to call in sick to work because a buddy couldnt play untill a certain time, and we were gona go check out this zone called Unrest , and from what we had heard it would take us ( 2 erudites ) a good hour just to travel there IF we dint die a few times on the way , and somehow talked a druid or a shaman into giving us a sow , or even this new things discovered called a PORT that supposedly druids and wizards could do.Even going so far as to vow when we learned the game better to make a couple of those classes so we could get in on this PORTING..
I remember when we got off at the dock in queynos , and i promptly met my demise at the hands of about 15 guards as they rushed me LOADING, please wait......... and my last chat text of my friend going WTF????!!! O YA erudite necros were KOS in queynos. So we spent the next couple of days tring to figure out how the hell was i going to get through queynos out into the hills so we could comence our journey to this Unrest. I just remember im on my about 30th run back to queynos to try again thinking maby this time i can get an invisibe and the guards wont see me. So i jump off the boat onto the dock and dont move till i get my invisible right? So im standing there and this guy goes "HEY guys whats ya doin? " were like " Hey just tring to get this necro thru queynos here" and guy goes " O hey you cant go through the town m8 gota take him through the sewes" . , and i just sorta stood there. I finaly said " sewers" he goes " ya thers an entrence in the bay there gota swim a bit first O and watch out for the rats!"
Well im not going to get into a reminicing "GOLD OLD DAYS " post here but sufice it to say, to this very day i have yet to have an experience to match that feel of accomplishment once i finaly made it through to the other side of queynos. Yes it made me mad somewhat to because i kept dieing , and having to run back over and over, but you see thats it to EQ inspired emotion good or bad, happiness or anger. You were hard pressed to find someone that didnt love or hate the game, or both at the same time.
Lots of people miss the sense of community. Or just the feeling of being "IN" the world. You know what i man not really "IN" the world just IN it . LIke Darkness thats actually.. ya you guessed it DARK. You Know its surprising to think that a little thing like having a torch of all things would make you feel like your playing "IN" a world instead of with it, but if you look at the games now days they cant even get DARK TIME ( ya this thing some of us like to call NIGHTTIME ) rite. I mean come on can YOU see in the dark ?
Yes there is the argument from the "MODERN" gamers out there that grew up with a waterd down post SOL ,, POP that are like OOO its just to hardcore the level grind is insane. Then of corse you have the crowd thats like WHY would you want to make a game HARDCORE cant we just have it all nice and simple and easy with soloable all the way through like Wo ....... nevermind not gona get into that argument either. The fact of the matter is if you were enjoying the game , (such as my little story above) and not just playing with it. You know get the gear / lvls / status / BIGGER E PENIS/ BRAGGING RIGHTS, you really dindnt knotice the grind. I mean hell in my little story in that hole week there i think it was it took me to FINALY get to the other side of queynos i got maby 10 levels, dint pay much attention to it just hangin out with my friend gettin pissed at dieing 50000 ( add more zeros here ) times.
Later on when we both advanced a little, and learnd about the game some more we had a club. No not a guild just a little wizards club where we would just meet out in the middle of nowhere spire such as NK and just chat it up. Well it goes without saying theres never gona be another original EQ , or even a class server eq as SoE are to hellbent on stealing some of WoWs thunder that there to busy clo... well exploreing less options of revenue. I personaly think you could get a few pple together ... make a comparable old school eq model , even if it only supported a few hundred pple it would be well worth it , but there is no motivation to do so, and it just dosnt have the profit potential of the mainstream "games" if you can call em that, to grab any kind of online company that i know of as there all about profits now and not the games. I saw a quote somewhere that i thought was revelent. " just because McDonalds has BILLIONS of customers dosnt make it the best resturant" well just because the mainstream is geard towards insta grat GIVE ME NOW UBER LOOTZ PWANAGE dosnt make it the best game model. Dosnt mean old Eq was the best either, but weather you loved or hated it ........
HELL YOUR STILL READING FORUMS ABOUT IT 9 YEARS LATER WHERE DO YOU THINK THOSE MAINSTREAMS WILL BE IN 9, 10 YEARS EH? YA THATS RIGHT DROPPED FOR THE NEXT BEST THING!!

Lost potential would accuratedly descibe why I am here.
You recall this new legend in minor league? The guy who breaks all records? He was so damn good...but he never did better than average in the big leagues.
Peoples will still talk about this guy who breaks all the records in the minor leagues and was such a deception...
EQ could have been so much more...heck, listening to me couldn't have been as bad as listening to Afterlife...and I am definitely not the best person to listen to. :P

Great post there, and I like the McDonald's analogy; it's very true. Also like the end, lol where you say " you are still reading!!??" too funny.
There are other games coming out, all with the impractical goal of "being the biggest game world" or "having the best graphics" and such. But they just don't realize that gameplay > all. But, I do know it's shiny packages on shelves with awesome screenshots that lure many players in. Truthfully, when I first picked up EQ on the store shelf, I was not impressed enough to buy it. I set it down. It was only months later, when I planned to buy UO second age, that I decided to visit gamespot.com and saw that EQ was all the rage. So I took a chance and bought it. What a blast that was. Wild ride that first year, for sure.
If I wanted WOW-type gameplay, I'd buy a console. I expect a deeper experience for my MMOs. And none did that better than EQ before it evolved into the butchering of patchwork that it currently remains.
Long Live EQ!
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
Im not sure what happened exactly, when they changed the graphics engine, they just sort of lost the old feelings.
I too have many fond memories of experiences, both of excitement and anger.
I liked arguing and fighting over VOX or Nagafen. I enjoyed spawn camping. Some of my friends made real good money from the game as well, they were selling those boots that used to drop from a level 20 dungeon, but were changed to some crazy long quest (forgot the name). He would sell those boots for $1000 a pair.
Manastones, also a $1000+ item.
When I quit playing I sold off all my gear and made about $1200. The gameplay was great, feign death was the best skill I have ever seen in an MMO to date.
Im sad and still waiting for the next game that grabs my attention like EQ did.
Dude I invented the burger concept..
I am one of the Classic Champions (people giving SOE a hard time to make it)...
I wish I could feel the same way about everquest. not that I don't like eq it's just that I've never actually played it since I don't feel how it's good to jump into a game with 10+ expansions
