Age of Conan: AoC Community Grows to 500,000

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Funcom has announced that the Age of Conan Community has grown to 500,000 fans, a number based on the number of players who have signed up for the beta, and on the number who have joined the ‘Clan of Conan’ official fan club.

Funcom and Eidos are excited to announce that over 500,000 gamers from all over the world have signed up to become a member of the Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures community by either signing up for the ongoing beta test or by joining the ‘Clan of Conan’ official fan club. Funcom is responding to the growing numbers by introducing websites and forums for the English, German, French and Spanish market to support the launch in all of these territories.

"The massive attention Age of Conan is generating throughout the international gaming community is simply amazing,” says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “The game seems to be already striking a chord with gamers across the world and we are thrilled and motivated by all the positive feedback we have been getting from both the press and the community."

Don't think everyone that signed up for the fan club also signed up for the beta? So thats thousands of double counting people? Then there is those that sign up for beta with multiple accounts but that is hard to count so ok for that.

But Grats to 500k signups to beta+fanclub.

I don't really feel as though I'm a part of this community even though I'm one of the 500k members.

Signing up for beta and buying the box are two entirely different animals. The majority of people who sign up for betas are people looking to play for free.

It's become so prevalent that some of the item mall games are perpetually in beta so people think they're getting into something new.

I wonder how long people realize this isn't the game they read about years ago. Since beta started, and all the WoW kiddies flooded in complaining about how hard it was, they've taken a very simple and easy game, made it even simpler. Nerfing the combat and all that. A huge amount of features are missing from beta, and the game has been pushed back twice. Isn't looking too good.

Let me ask you, how can a game in Beta get nerfed on unfinished content?

Was you aware the internal build in places of the game is 4 months ahead of beta, add to that 4 more months to release = 8 more months of content to be added in, and your worried about content and nerfing now? And your worried that because of the genre its in, its naturally prone to delays, just like everything other game out there and that effects you how? You jump up and down screaming like a baby who has dropped its candy on a dirty floor?

    Your statement wreaks of troll.

Once upon a time there were three billy goats, who were to go up to the hillside to make themselves fat, and the name of all three was "Gruff."

On the way up was a bridge over a cascading stream they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a great ugly troll , with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.

So first of all came the youngest Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

"Trip, trap, trip, trap! " went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll .

"Oh, it is only I, the tiniest Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, with such a small voice.

"Now, I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! pray don't take me. I'm too little, that I am," said the billy goat. "Wait a bit till the second Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Well, be off with you," said the troll.

A little while after came the second Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"Oh, it's the second Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, who hadn't such a small voice.

"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! Don't take me. Wait a little till the big Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Very well! Be off with you," said the troll.

But just then up came the big Billy Goat Gruff .

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap! went the bridge, for the billy goat was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him.

"Who's that tramping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"It's I! The big Billy Goat Gruff ," said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.

"Now I 'm coming to gobble you up," roared the troll.

Well, come along! I've got two spears,

    And I'll poke your eyeballs out at your ears;

    I've got besides two curling-stones,

And I'll crush you to bits, body and bones.

That was what the big billy goat said. And then he flew at the troll, and poked his eyes out with his horns, and crushed him to bits, body and bones, and tossed him out into the cascade, and after that he went up to the hillside. There the billy goats got so fat they were scarcely able to walk home again. And if the fat hasn't fallen off them, why, they're still fat; and so,

    Snip, snap, snout.

    This tale's told out.

How can you nerf combat when the game isn't even live?

Should be saying they have changed the combat to something they feel they want to put into the Live Version. Or say they tweaked the combat model to something more accessible to players of all ages.

You can't nerf something that isn't even live yet

Im also very sceptical about AoC. It looks brilliant, but its funcom (funcon?). loads of lies and excuses will come up when its gold for their shallow, limited mostly stupid gameplay ideas (but the dumb masses will play it anyways). Theres still a NDA for beta players active ?

I love how they futz with the numbers in order to appear competitive with WAR.

Tuscon has a "community" of 500,000; AoC, not so much

Anything that makes Blizzard sweat is worthwhile.   WoW has been essentially competition-free for too long, the next batch of games in 2008 need to challenge it.

I'm not saying any game will unseat WoW.  (No MMMORPG has ever been 'killed' by another game, UO is still around for pete's sake).   But competition will force ALL developers to stay on their toes.   And I suspect that the remaining WoW developers are lacking the imagination of the Blizz employess that left.

I wonder if we'll be seeing a 'nipple-visible' WoW servers after this announcement :)

Except for those in the United States; unless they are willing to find some sort of nipple patch. I for one am glad that they make it a choice; because I don't want some female character to suddenly flash me when my parents could walk by (yes, I'm 21, by the way; not all college students live in dorms or apartments)

  • I dont belive that there is over 500,000 signed up for the Age of Conan beta-test. I agreed with "Protest" that Funcom *ways* to PR. So far I understand there is only 10,000 signed up for Beta test a couple of month ago.

I think something needs to be done about beta testers who just want a freebie.

I suppose there is the argument of if the game is a good enough demo it may lead to retail sales.

It would be good if all pre-order buyers can get a chance to do some beta for example because they are people who count -  as well as eventual subscribers of course.

and yes I am pre ordering  AoC for sure

What do you mean by shallow, limited, mostly stupid gameplay ideas? That they are not american-made mainstream ideas or what?

Its not even out yet and you are accusing future players of being dumb masses? So what are you suggesting? that we all join the masses playing WOW?I think if it is too dumb a game the masses will not be playing it personally, nor if its too buggy.

We can only hope that it is original enough (more than just nipples) and not too simplistic and also bug free that it will not implode on launch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Wait for the NDA to lift before ordering this game.

Calling a game great based on the marketing hype Funcom is putting out is...premature.
