I like Burglar for its variety... I play solo a lot so i feel it suits my game... I can take down most mobs no prob, though a little slower that other classes... my survivability is high... I can pickpocket... can stealth through mobs i dont need... i can stun, riddle, and debuff... i can evade being hit... i have cool skills like Hide in Plain sight which comes in very hand when things go wrong... I just like it...
LOTRo minstrels are fun. It actually harbors a very varied playstyle. From a healbot to healer soloist, minstrels offers various mix of heal/buff/DPS. Actually one member of our kin (guild) max out strength as a minstrel and was able to solo big mobs such as the Snowbeast and damn black rare drake (I forgot his name). DPS minstrels, however are effective only at very high levels, with all the epic skills and such.
As for solo levelling, hunters are good classes to play. They are effective at killing singles around level 10, and after level 30 (quest bow, xbow), they got enough skills and items from the game to solo kill any yellow con mobs without taking damage. With a good trap, pulling 2 is easy. You need to play smart, use the terrain, and move a lot. But that is what soloing calls for. Of course, never feel shy to run away.
For duos, AoE champion + friend (say minstrel) is downright thrilling, just a tad too easy. Charge into a bunch of non magic non range enemies who do not run away (orcs, no no not goblins), and set loose the AoE :-).
I voted Champion of course. I'm tired of playing tanks cause chances are they will get shafted one way or another. The Champion meets my criteria of being durable enough in battle while being the damaging figher I wanted.
Least for that game and considering it's an MMO. I don't think I'll really see the true warrior type in a MMO.
My favorite is the Captain. I'm a melee person, and the captain is a melee class. But he is also much more than that. He's a support roll, with buffs. Your all-around utility class. But he has some really kick-ass "oh shit" skills that can save a fellowship in an instant. It can mean the difference between a wipe and sucess. Because of that, there is a built in self-lessness to the role of the captain. In a few cases, I've been the one that "died" (retreated) and allowed the fellowship to go on. When I play my captain, I feel like I'm really contributing something.
The captain is also a great challenege to play because you have to keep track of virtually everything going on in a group situation. Your buffs aren't cast and forget - they will wear off and you need to pay attention to that. It's especially difficult if you don't cast them all at once because you have some of your group with buffs, and some not. You can also heal, and a good captain will be watching the morale of his fellows closely to make sure the healer (if there is one in the fellowship) isn't falling behind. He's got in-combat rezzes which are invaluable to the sucess of many an adventure. Finally is his miricle skills that he can pop and save a complete wipe. All the while the captain is probably in there mixing it up with a mob or two because his dps is equally valuable. Indeed, he's got a few melee damage skills that also buff, which again are quite valuable.
There's quite a lot to worry about, particularly in a group. The captain is incredibly fun to play.
P.S. He's also got a pet with it's own buffs and skills, so having good pet management abilities is a must.

well im pretty new to lotro but so far I have tried out a guardian, champion and minstrel. I am really likeing the minstrel because it isnt really like a class I have played before in an mmo. Champion is nice because of the damage but I always seem to pull mass agro all the time and can get irritating
Varied play styles and I can duo with just about anyone.
Never liked a healing type class in any game before, but this one is just a blast because I can go into DPS mode and tear some mobs up. I can solo elites and mulitple regular mobs of the same level.

Gotta be the minstrel.. because you can kill a troll with a loud scream and a wicked lute riff!
deviliscious: (PS. I have been told that when I use scientific language, it does not make me sound more intelligent, it only makes me sound like a jackass. It makes me appear that I am not knowledgable enough in the subject I am discussing to be able to translate it for people outside the field to understand. Some advice you might consider as well)
Minstrel, cause I get invites and people needing my help all the time, which can be both a blessing and a curse; sometimes I just plan to do some crafting or kill some mobs for deeds, and then some group needs me for some big quest/epic book chapter, so I usually go and help them, as long as they're friendly and have a group ready to go. I tend to say no to Rift invites, though
