Had it been Skill based instead of level based?

I think people would have looked at it as the definitive "Different "  MMO, had it been skill based.

Ive always wanted to see a skill based fantasy game.

Heres hoping for it still.

Aye, I'd like to see something different from the level system.

But with the limited number of quality MMOs released per year, I'd be lucky if one had a good number of things I've always wished for.

It's not going to happen in AoC, but it is something to hope for in games down the road.

Agree 100% im so sick and tired of lazy MMO company's making stupid clone's of a core system thats been around since the 80's and then sit around in front of fans acting as if they made something epic!

Ultima Online is a skill based fantasy MMO.  Its been around for over 10 years!

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S

If you want to know whay Conan (or most games made) are level based vs skill based you simply have to look at a list of MMOs by current and highest population.

UO and AC were skill based, EQ was level based and had over twice as many subscribers as both when all were at their high. Highes skill based game subscriber base was i think SWG which had a high of 250,000.

Level based games have had larger player bases then skill based games since MMOs started coming out. Thus, more level based games are created then skill based games.

I like a more hybrid form kind of like EQ had. It was level based but you had to manually build up your skills. No buying 2HS and being a master at it, you picked up a 2HS, sucked with it, but kept using it until you build your skill.

All games have levels, you just dont always hear a ding. (perhaps there are exceptions but they are few)

Do i think that there should be skill based games made, of course. I feel that all types of games should be made for the mmo genre or it will get stagnent and die. I dont really PVP but i pray for the Hard Core PVP game that some people want. I dont think one would have a huge player base but i dont care if it does or not, as long as someone is having fun.
