SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Funcom has posted parts #3 and #4 of their video Q&A from the recent Age of Conan press event in Oslo.

This Friday, we’re happy to present the last two installments of our video Q&A with the developers.

You’ll find all sorts of answers to all sorts of questions in here, and we hope you will come away informed and entertained. Some of the topics in these videos are the merge of some of the classes, minimum system requirements, combos, art direction, character customization, PvP levels and much more.

You’ll find the torrent-downloads here (#3) and here (#4).

Read more here.

I'm still watching the videos but I just wanted to make a quick comment.

Around 4:30 of the first video Gaute basically says that they have been reluctant to make changes to the game because they are worried about "rocking the boat".

    What?!?!

Are you kidding me?  They are actually letting the whiny forum posters dictate how the game is developed.  Makes me a bit sad that they actually take into account the community's feelings when they NEED to make a change to the game.

What is there is other stuff that they feel is a detriment to the game but they will not change it because they don't want to upset the community.  Bah!

I mean come on.  I could understand their viewpoint if the game was already released but it's still in development, they shouldn't hesitate to change anything that needs to be changed at this point.

(Too be updated if I have any more comments)

I guess this is where we differ in opinions.  I haven't contributed a dime to Funcom.  I do not feel that they have any obligation to me to keep components of the game that have already been plublicaly announced exactly the same as advertised.

On the other hand.  When the game is released and I do start paying to play it.  If a part of the game is not fun, or is bugged, or completely broken because they didn't want to change it because it might upset the pre-release community, then I would be unhappy.

So, most of the time, the community cries havoc when they think they are being ignored by developers. They demand that the developers should look into a community and see what the community wants to see in a game and try to balance that out. The cries for developers to listen to the community are almost always there.

And now you say they shouldn't? Come on, seriously, you want the developers -NOT- to listen to the community while making the game? not to listen to constructive criticism and to the people who are, obviously, dying to play this game? What kind of logic is that?

Well personally this has always been my view.

Innovative games don't get made by the masses.

But that's not really the point here.  The point that I was trying to make was that Gaute basically said that they were reluctant to change what they felt were flawed parts of the game, simply because some people in the community might get upset.

That just seems ridiculous to me.  I guess I'm wrong.

Its because of the community (beta testers) the game was delayed  once agin, i think it wasent nessesery.  The community should never be taken seriesly by devs since anything that the players notice sure will be noticed by devs aswell. Devs isen't stupid if thats what you think.

I've gone through all 4 vids and either they're very bad at explaining things or the game does feel like every 'WoW/EQ'-ish with the way to raiding is and itemisation to the extent gear matters more over skill.

Personally speaking I never liked how for instance in WoW pvp if you had the top teir gear you could wipe the fall quite easilly if the other players hadn't, the way the crafting system is and the way they said 'number crunching gameplay fun' surgests that its very much about the numbers not tactics, which TBH is a bit of a shame considering the combat system could have easily gone the other way (very much like Spellborn has done by throwing itemisation out the window).

It's still looking a good game ethier way I just perfer not to be chasing the 'phat loot'

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

Its ok you dont have to chase any 'phat' loot you can make better gear in crafting =)

Just because the game incorporates Raiding, or any form of itemisation does make it a WoW clone. It offers things like raiding for those people who enjoy it.  The remark about number crunching stems from AO in which there was quite alot. If you listened to the guy he said they are trying to make a game that would appeal to both types of player.

After playing the game before and right after that Q&A session I can honestly say its enjoyable and quite different from WoW.

Raiding will be in every new game coming out in 2008. They put 5 yrs into development in AoC there are lots more things to the game, its not centered around any one thing.

I think that developers should come up with a vision, design the game, and produce the best product possible. Then it goes into testing, which his designed in several parts. 1. Test technical aspects of the game, 2. test fun and playability balance and so on, 3. stress tests.

If the company does not listen to the needs, wants, or concerns of the community at any point they run the risk of ruining the game. If they listen too much they run the risk of ruining the game. The trick is finding a balance of the two, and I will be honest game developers/companies who do not listen at all (SOE and their handling of SWG for example) do a greater disservice than those that actually listen to their paying customers.

So really I think you both make good points, I just think the company needs to do a bit of both and find a balance.
