Best MMOs for Role-playing?

I'm looking for an MMO that caters to the hard-core role-player. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Basically there are none - hardcore RP isn't exactly big business. Here's a bit of advice from my point of view.
LotRO on a RP server. Sadly you're from the US and there is no official RP server in the US (Landroval is the unofficial US RP server I believe) but there is one in Europe, the Laurelin server where I currently play. Granted, not everyone on the server roleplays at all times but there are plenty of hardcore RPers around and Codemasters (the company running the game in Europe) does a decent job policing the server. GMs will change inappropriate character names, will ban gold spammers and will enforce the policy that all communication on /say channel is in-character. NWN - still your best bet for RP in a fantasy world, however it's not massive multiplayer, it's only multiplayer and the biggest servers (privately run) can deal with about 100 concurrent players - that's about how far it will go.
There's a hardcore RP game in development. Be warned - it's from a small, independent company and your bet is as good as mine whether the game will ever see release, not to speak about level of polish and eyecandy, but you might want to read about it here: www.adellion.com

FFXI is purely based on role-playing. Have fun.
Nexus TK or Dark ages by far. Those games were developed around RP.
You can try Ultima online with the trial.
It was designed with roleplay in mind, though EA lost the way some time ago.
There are some good roleplay communities out there though on the europa shard for example .
Ryzom used to be one.

Tried: Ultima Online, Everquest 2, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Flyff, Perfect World, Silkroad Online, EVE Online, Ryzom.
SWG has StoryTeller token where you can create your own adventure or settings for a limited time. There are also other tools and aspects in game where you can Role Play, but as a few others have ssaid above me there are no MMO's that cater to the hard core RP'er.
You may also want to look into Ryzom. They havea similar stoy telling feature and I've heard alot of RP'ers are there.
