If I were to start playing today, what seems to be some of the less played/more needed classes in this game? I know healers are generally hard to find in just about any mmo.

Same as any Trinity-mentality game, groups are always looking for tanks and healers because most players prefer to dps.
One nice thing about VG is there's a few completely different classes for both tanking and healing. I was burned-out after tanking dungeons and raids daily in WoW but a year later I've rolled a Dread Knight as my primary in VG and loving that playstyle, as it lets me dps if I want to and is viable to solo relatively often too.
I've grouped with clerics, disciples, and blood mages. Clerics seem pretty straight-forward but both disciples and blood mages seem very interesting, perhaps even fun. Maybe someday I'll try one, but for now VG doesn't seem the type of game to get serious about alts with.
Blood Mages are actually awesome, and they have a very unique feel to them. At least until WAR comes out where the disciple of Khaine sounds a lot like it's VG counterpart.
You have clerics and shamans in every single fantasy setting game or so, but the Blood Mage is really fun, heals well and have pretty good dps as well.
My recommendations and opinions based on the ability to group and solo by playstyle catagory:
Tanks: Dread Knight > Paladin > Warrior based almost solely on playability and soloability.
Melee DPS: Monk > Ranger > Rogue all about the same, although i ranked them based on soloability IMO. I personally have only seen 1 rogue and never played one.
Healers: Cleric (standard plate wearer, but they can melee alright too), Disciple (monklike healer), Blood Mage (Necromatic healer) are all about the same, choice becomes playstyle.
DPS Caster: Necro or Sorcerer depending on playstyle (big nukes or DoTs)
Utility: Bard > Shaman > Druid > Psionicist Bards are phenominal in groups and solo mediocre. Shaman is good at both. Druid is supposed to be a DPS caster but lacks dps and has weak healing. Psi, well I haven't played nor seen many.
Oddly enough, healers are far easiest to find for a group. Tanks are hardest to get and CC. So if I could recommened you I would say Warrior/Paladin/Dreadknight/Psionicist
REALITY CHECK
I went and picked Vanguard up, was playing all weekend. I started a Cleric first because usually those are hard to come by in most mmo's. Then I noticed about 10 clr's LFG so it doesn't seem the case with this game. I also started a Necro since this was my first character in EQ1 and I played him for years but it seems like there are more than enough of them around as well, so I will keep him on the side to mess around with. Now I am still having the debate with myself as to which class to play. I see a lot of groups looking for Tanks or DPS. I didn't care for the Rogue, the Sorc seemed like it would be fun. Are DK's sufficient as tanks or are there places where you would need a real warrior as MT?
I am still having a tough time deciding what class to play. I read in another thread that Tanks have a hard time getting into raiding guilds. That makes me think that there are too many of them around. I always see a lot of Necro's which I do like as a class. Clerics also seem to be plentiful. So can anyone confirm that tanks are still needed? I made a DK which I am enjoying playing. If not i may try a Sorc, I haven't seen too many of them around.
DK is a good option. They are not as overpopulated as it may seems (check my blog with class pop) and needed a lot for groups/raids. I plan to roll one sooner or later.

Shamans are healers and probably heal as well as Clerics or Bloodmages. They come in 3 flavors, Turgin (Bear) which is a tank, Hayatet (Bird) which is DPS, and Rakuur (Wolf) I guess are utility. Right now Turgin Shamans are the flavor of the month on the PvP server. Which probably means they will get nerfed soon.
Thanks, I think I will stick with the DK then. Also I figured I might as well go ahead and 2 box, make myself a healer to go along with him. I used to 3 box EQ back in the day so 2 in VG shouldn't be a problem.
Wow that table helps a ton. Nice job on it.
Rogue or Bloodmage. Hard to play, hard to figure out but excellent, excellent classes to bring to the party. They have some very fun and unique abilities.
Tanks are plentiful. Clerics and Shammy's are also pretty plentiful.
Some say tanks are needed and some say they are enough. Keeps making me debate my class decision. I am picking up another copy on the way home today so I am going to look for a good duo to play.
Is there a reason not many people play a Monk? Seems like a fun class.
Monks were a bit weak from the beginning, but they buffed them and are pretty well balanced now.
