Magic

I haven't yet seen a post on using magic here and i was wondering how they are working out how to aim magic? it it going to be a lock on thing and once you select the target it will go there on its own? I'm hoping it's something along those lines because if they make it too hard to aim, mages will get owned by all the other classes.

Please let me know if you have any links/info on this subject

It is going to be area of effect magic, or cone .... this is what devs said in the interviews.

No sticky target auto aiming ... same goes for healing and beneficial magics

I think it will make battle alot more interesting and FPS-ish in a way. No click and BOOM. I like the idea.

I will play a Ranger or a caster when I get the game, so I am interested in any new links concerning magic also. Post away...

That sounds fun, so ALL magic will be AoE and cone?

Just thought of something else  >.< , how will mages be able to use long range spells if everything is AoE?

Good question. Guess we will have to wait for open beta to find that out !

I hate the idea personally. I dont like FPS type games at all.

AoC's target audience is most likely (or should be) gamers like me. 28-42 age range who grew up on Conan comics, playing the very first rpg pc games, and graduated to Ultima and SWG.

This is a dealbreaker for me. I was hoping the casters wouldnt have to deal with that point and click stuff.

Forcing casters in close to use cones is going to put your lowest hp, lowest armored people inside melee range.

Not a good sign for casters.

I would think that every class will have its weaknesses. However, that certainly does not mean that casters will be fodder on the battlefield.

It would not be much of a game if class balance issues were that bad at launch.

Although not being a fan of FPS I actually like the idea as well. Not only does it sound more interesting, I wonder if it could lead to more tactical adventuring and PvP as dead casters mean squat.

A nice thing about the spells are you dont see a 'timid' fireball follow the target around the screen going through the terrain.

Terrain is a big part of combat, just as higher ground makes ranging better. Is all about the direction you face, not a short cut Auto locked on and release spells in a spam way.

That is exactly my thinking. Im not a fan of  twink games, by any means, but I think this could be a step in good "tactical" direction.

What do you mean by "timid", Avery?

If this about casters is true they shouldbe allowed to run and cast or else its a major imbalance, and also very boring. FPS are run and shoot acc decrease in some games but can still do something

  • pust082pust082 Member Posts: 157

Illusions, "stone skin" spells, insta-cast and many other tactics can work, but running and spell shooting is not one of them. You will have a bunch of casters kiting other players.

There is no real kiting in AoC. The basic design was to have an overkill aka go-to-hell in game. The hell isnt anymore, still i am quite sure that mages will probably have almost no limit in doing damage. I think it was Q&A #1 where it was mentioned that mages still can over do it to some degree.

The combat has some FPS elements, but people should be prepared that this is a DoT and HoT game, which will slow down the FPSish style. It was said in one of the Q&A that all heals are HoT, i also saw in one movie where a assassin did run away from a mob and died after 20 meters from a DoT. I do think that a lot of damage is DoT, be it magic or bleeding from arrows and weapons.

The same thing was being said about rangers..... Cones and targeting became auto attack......

    I rest my case
