V.I.L.E. - An Upcoming Sci-Fi MMORPG

inferno89inferno89 Member UncommonPosts: 16

Hi guys,

I had a search on the forums but couldn't find any details on this game.  The website is www.vilestudios.com/

Is anyone else kinda getting tired of the whole orcs/medieval MMO theme?  If you have a look at the upcoming games, most of them have something to do with medieval times, or a different period in the past but undeniably are pretty much the same.  There are a few sci-fi MMO's coming out though and I have my eye on Jumpgate Evolution.  However V.I.L.E. has caught my eye also.

If you have a read of their FAQ, there are some great features that they plan to implement.  Some of the highlights that I particularly like are:

*  Skills-based system (whilst still maintaining levels) - Assign skill points to skills that you want in a certain field.  If you want to spec for Gunnery skills, you can.  If you want to be a Medic, spec those skills.  However, you can unlearn skills and learn new ones depending on what the situation calls for.  Similar to UO and the earlier SWG skill system.

*  PvP Looting - When you kill players in certain areas, you'll gain XP and honor points.  However if you are attending an event called "A Call to Arms", full PvP looting is enabled.  Therefore, you must be wise in what you take with you into the battlefield.  Only take your best set of armour/weapons if you're confident you'll come back unscathed.

* A full-on Jail system - You can break the rules, commit in-game crimes and make a fortune (think a smuggler like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, etc in Star Wars) but if you get caught, you have to do hard time in-game.  The player is arrested and fined automatically for the crime, but instead of just sitting there AFK waiting for the jail timer to lapse (2-10 minutes of real time), they will be asked random questions.  All of which are designed to keep the player at their computer during the jail time.

* Fighting in Mechs and other vehicles - Combining skills from several player classes will combine to give the vehicle bonuses.  Gunnery class to increase damage and a pilot class to increase speed for example.

There are many more features, but the above are the highlights for me.  I've been playing MMO's since I first stepped foot into Ultima Online in 1997.  I think any gamer who has played since then and experienced what it was like to play those games are in a class of their own.  I haven't found a game yet that gives me a greater sense of fear of stepping out of the guards protection, knowing full well that i could lose literally everything I have equipped and in my backpack.  There were no epic weapons of mass annhialiation.  You couldn't trust anyone other than your guild mates.  Even allied guilds could turn against you at any time.  I have played about 85% of MMO's released in the past decade (AC2, DAoC, SB, L2, GW, SWG, WoW to name a few and also am in betas for a few of the new upcoming games) but nothing appears close to giving me the same feeling as UO.  Darkfall is the only exception, if it's ever released!

Anyway, i'm sidetracking...  Have a look at the site for yourselves and form your own judgement.  It's early days yet, and as we've all seen in the past ... a potentially awesome game could be developed right up to the alpha stage, yet still be cancelled.  Let's hope V.I.L.E doesn't succumb to the same fate.

i also cant see how you are going to get a fanbase without a forum for people to discuss on... i looked at the screenshots and i would give this game a try if i could talk to other people from around the globe that are interested..

i thought it look interesting too, but with ZERO mention of any type of crafting, only upgrading, it might just be planetside meets tabula rasa. but for those that want that...

Nice assumption there pompey, and I wish I could develop games like this.  Sadly though, i'm not a game developer, just a normal gamer.  So you can troll elsewhere :)

I first saw this game in an article i read earlier today, found at www.olgn.net/archives/vile-a-upcoming-sci-fi-mmorpg

I came across it by doing a google search of "upcoming scifi games xbox360" because I've completed Mass Effect twice now and there are a heap of games coming out for the 360, but hardly any good Scifi ones :(

No mention of crafting doesn't mean its 100% not going to be implemented.   I hope they do add some crafting in.  Still early days so who knows.  If it turns into PS/TR tho, that would suck :(
