Well, you can warp to any belt in-system from the right-click context menu. Just right-click on empty space, and see the list under 'Asteroid Belts'.

At the start, when you have low skills including refining skills, it is almost always better to sell the ore unrefined; less waste means you actually get more money, even if the unit price for the minerals in the ore would be slightly higher. You'll need to calculate this yourself, though.

You'll also do well to read myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp <- Halada's Mining Guide, and take a look at http://eve.grismar.net/ore/ <- Ore chart.

Also, keep an eye out for people setting up friendly little mining ops, it's much more fun to mine when there's others to share the pain. :D

Screw mining. What is your ingame name? I could send you some cash to bootstrap you life in Eve..
For me, i never mined to get money. I ran some missions and then got into a corp, where i got starter friggies for free :)

Well you proablly get banned for doing this no days but way back in the day I used to run 2 accounts and about a 3000 line macro to go at it 10 hours a day while I was at work.  All I can say is that mining was the most painful thing about the game.

You could go out into a mid level system with a BS and mine and rat farm to keep from getting too bored but you still need some hauling for you to be effcient.

For mining skills you will want to look under the industry section of your skills list. You will see refining, refining efficiency, etc. If you go through those skills, it will show you what benefits you receive from them. If you're going to be a miner by trade, I would recommend starting a new character. If you're just doing a bit of mining to get your character going, you may want to seek out mission running instead. You will end up wasting valuable time on mining, instead of raising combat skills.

Also, something that helped me out quite a bit, was starting off training learning skills first. Over time its simply just the best thing you can do for yourself, as the time you will save is exponential. Hope this helps!

You may have to buy "Refining" on the market first, before training it. (Just like every other skill)

By the way, mine scordite. It is the most valuable ore at the time of writing, if i remember correctly

Scordite, Kernite, and Omber are the best ores right now (in that order) for hi sec.  I really haven't mined though, preferring mission running atm. Although there are variables like mining speed, availability, and ore refinement that can make a difference on what to mine and where.

The best ship for beginning miners is the osprey. It gets a 20% mining bonus. In a strict time analysis, I think mining is more profitable that missions, but missions are more fun. People often think missions are more profitable but they don't realize how much time they spend doing them. Mining isn't as fun so people stop sooner and end up with about the same amount of ISK as someone doing missions. Seems that way to me.

You can purchase any skill as a 'skillbook' on the market, usually from one of the stations that have 'universityish' sounding names (School of Applied Knowledge stations, for instance).

And there's no shame in getting the first bootstrap up, in EVE, isk is a tool, not a purpose anyways.
