I have a question about the expansion packs. I'm assuming I will need to buy and install ALL of them to have all the content, correct? Or, will buying the most recent one include everything? The latest I've seen is that you can get the Vana'diel Collection 2008, which includes the original game and all expansions including the most recent, Wings of The Goddess. However, I only see it avail. for PS2 and 360. They don't seem to have it out for PC yet... at least on GameStop.com.
For PC you'd get the Vana'diel Collection 2007 and then pick up the WoTG expansion separately - at least until they get the 2008 version out with everything. Not sure why it's not avail. yet. Next, if I only have the first expansion and another player has the most recent, can we still interact? Or, are people with different expansion packs segregated? Absolutely, you'll be able to talk. As long as you're both on the same server. What happens when you don't have an expansion is you'll still see content from it - like armor, weapons, jobs, etc... since those can all be seen outside the expansion areas. However, you won't be able to access any of the areas yourself. Now that said, I don't know how it would work with gear. Like, if someone gets an armor piece introduced with an expansion that you don't have installed, and they put it up on the Auction House to sell... theoretically you should be able to buy it. It might not show up at all there unless you have the expansion. Since I've always upgraded with each of the expansions, I'm really not sure how that works.

Hmm, that's interesting. I only have Rise of the Zilart installed right now so next time I'm online I'll check that out. Find me an item in one of the expansions and I'll search for it on the AH tonight. Better tell me how to find it on the AH too, or else it'll take me all night to find it :P.
I have a question though... FFXI does not allow digital downloads for expansions, correct? They only allow you to buy registration codes online? The Gamestop near me has none of the FFXI expansions so if I choose to upgrade at some point I need to know where I should go. Thanks!

Wow.. your copy is that old? Hmm.... Well, I'll let them tell you an item to look for since I don't know what expansion it is they're curious about but don't have. I have a question though... My understanding is that you purchase the code and register it... When you next log in, it *should* see that you have the expansion registered, but don't have any of the content and it'll start downloading it. For allthat trouble, I'd almost just go ahead and purchase the Vana'diel Collection and just register and install the expansions you don't have already. It'll probably cost less in the long run than buying each expansion code individually. There's a menu that pops up and lets you install each game/expansion separately, so you should just be able to go straight to the expansions. Good luck!

Well, my copy isn't THAT old. I have the Vana'diel Collection I believe. It has Rise of Zilart and Chains of Promathia... I installed Chains of Promathia on my computer but have not bought a registration code for it yet so it's not activated. I was planning to buy the 2008 Collection but apparently it's not for PC? That's dumb. :P I'll have to do some exploring.
I'm not going to give a detailed account of my experience in FF XI because so much has already been said and I think that Mike has given us all a very clear image of what the game holds.
I'm posting because I have a question. I left FF XI because it was a very difficult game and I was looking for something slightly more casual. Now I am interested in coming back but haven't been up to date. My question is concerning many of the quick missions and activities you talked about, Mike.
Are the assaults and other fast xp activities open at low level? Is there a certain cap you have to hit before you can engage in the 3/per day timed instances or the skirmishes? I am a college student full-time (finally!) at a very competitive school and am looking at 2 hours max a night (except the Friday/Sat portion, where I could play for up to 3 or 4 maybe).
Anyway, I was just wondering when these options opened up. Also, any suggestions on a good server for a new 360 user to come on? I know the leveling scheme is based around skill and experience, but are there any link-shells specifically known for being gracious to new comers and not coming down hard on someone who is learning?

Ohhhh right. You used the Buddy Pass that came with yours, correct? And I'm assuming that didn't come with the CoP reg code.
Okay that makes sense

Ahh! Okay, yeah I've seen a few /tells from you, but when I try to respond you're not online anymore.
Let me know what times you're on usually and I'll keep an eye open. I'm out in the Dunes atm working on leveling (yet) another subjob, so I won't be back Windy way for a bit, but I can do a better job of helping you out in /tells at least.

I am a college student full-time (finally!) at a very competitive school and am looking at 2 hours max a night (except the Friday/Sat portion, where I could play for up to 3 or 4 maybe). Assaults, I believe, open at level 50 which, in the context of FFXI's xp curve, isn't very hard to attain, even on limited time... Again, as has been discussed, might just take you a bit longer to get there than those with more time. If you enjoy the game enough, then that shouldn't be a problem... just a reality you have to deal with. The Campaign Battles, which are what would be the "quick xp" things take place in the Wings of The Goddess areas. Now, depending on what job you're playing you can be there as early as your 30s and be effective. I know a couple folks who were doing those as early as 35. Your xp reward in campaign battle is based on your contribution during each round of fighting, with the xp rewarded as a "lump sum" at the end. Contributing includes fighting - but it also includes healing injured players and raising those who've died. As a DD you can get into the fray but you'll learn quickly which particular mobs to stay away from. For example, in the Rolanberry Fields theater, there's one named Go'Dah Softstep (think I got the first name right) who comes out pretty often. He travels around with a ninja side-kick who randomly tosses these *nasty* AOE bombs that have one-shotted me almost every time I've been in range - for ~1200HP each time. He hurts. So, I've learned to avoid that dude and stick to the normal, less "spectacular" ones. As long as you stick to those you can be more effective against, you should be fine. What platform you play on is really irrelevant. There's a mix of PC/PS2/360 players on all of them. I imagine each server has its own collective "personality" that sets it apart from others. Pandemonium has been my "home" since I first started and, even when I tried to go to a different server at one point, I ended up coming back to Pandy again. You get to become really familiar with the one you're on - names are familiar, etc. But that's just me. I think Pandy is great, personally. But again, I might be a bit biased .

what lv do you have to be to do Limbus, Assault, Salvage, sea and sky and how do u get access to them
Dynamis needs to be 65+ and have some cutscenes done.
Limbus, sky and sea need to be deep into the the chains of promathia and Rise of the zilart missions.
