Ok people. I KNOW, you won't believe me. I KNOW you'll all start flaming, but I still want to share my happiness and my astonishment with the few of you who care.
In 1999, when I was playing Diablo with friends, I kind of stated the following, because I thought that the medium outfit you got after killing lazarus was way cooler than the endgame platemail one. To me, then, the mid-range outfit looked like a battle-worn knight while the end-game one looked like conquistador ramirez slaying Indios in latin America. I don't know if you can remember. Well, what I said was:
"Wouldn't it be really cool if you could chosse how you look and still keep the stats of the kick-ass stuff.", and immediately, my friends back then said. "yea, mkay, so you'd look like a bettle and be a Ferrari? Sounds stupid."- This was the moment when I realized 'Dude, this is not a popular opinion, people wanna show off I guess.'
So I buried this idea, for years, I went through mmo after mmo and saw plenty of systems with casual wear that ripped you of all your kick-ass-gear and was good for pure in-town roleplay. So I kind of lived with this secularisation, the 'god of roleplay' and the 'science of +140 dmg pwn'.
Until Lord of the Rings ONline - Book 12. You may flame me as a liar, but heck, they now release EXACTLY what I have wanted and imagined for one whole decade. THANK YOU !

Yeah, it's a nice feature And it's good for you that you can finally get it.
I know of at least one other game where you can also have your 'kick-ass' equipment on for stats and then have other stuff on for looks. So that feature is out there, and it's good LOTRO is also getting it.
I can only say

Sorry...Everquest 2 had already done this over 4 months ago...
Relative to 10 years for the OP, LOTRO and Everquest 2 implimented the feature at the same time. But indeed it sounds like EQ2 has beaten LOTRO to the punch. To me, that's a good thing. Or rather, the fact that both games have it is a good thing. For those that like EQ2, they get this awesome feature. For those that like LOTRO, we get it too. The best of both worlds in both worlds.

It really doesn't matter if EQ2 already did it. For those of us who play LOTRO it is a first for us. Cause alot of us haven't played EQ2. Or no longer play EQ2 and wasn't for the change.
Chronicles of spellborn is taking a similar approach for the entire gear system. Good times ahead for many games it seems.
Hopefully the death of "armor dyes" will go hand in hand with this.

Who cares about EQ2?
Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
What's wrong with the armour dyes?
Check out my LOTRO Blog: www.middleearthadventurer.blogspot.com
To many games try to implement armor dyes as some band aid form of diversity. Most of the colors people choose just don't mesh well with the games atmosphere. Especially the comedians who make the rainbow suits or the neon pink/green/etc. I'm sure some games do it well and that I'm just scared from EQ....
If they are done in limited colors that work with the art direction of a game they are fine. Not my preference however.
Gah! .... The horror of neon pink ogres. I think I need to bleach my eyes.
I never said it was brand new (just because I've not nearly played all available titles), I just never had it and got the idea 10 years ago. Funny thing EQ2 has implemented this also, can only be a good thing, this is a trend I'd love to see staying for coming MMOs.
Well, amor dye is a double bladed sword I guess. It's relatively well done in some games (lotRO e.g. and horribly in others). Depends on how extreme you can choose your colors I guess. Lime green and pink velvet are just total no-gos imo.

I really really hate this idea.
I say if you dont like the way the armor looks then dont wear it.
I have equal hatred for the Helm: on/off feature, if you dont like the way the helmet looks dont wear a helmet.
Armor isnt supposed to be pretty, it is supposed to keep you from getting dead.
Just how i feel, you guys feel however you want. And be happy because your side is winning.
I can understand the feeling about the armor/clothing thing; as you might not want to see people fighting mobs in clothing that breaks the immersion for yourself. I don't happen to agree with that stance; but it is an understandable position.
The part I found hard to understand was the "I have equal hatred for the Helm on/off feature"
I don't understand that because it in no way affects your playing of the game. Unless, you feel that every adventurer battling mobs HAS to be wearing a helm. In that case, what recourse do the newbies have that haven't bought or found a helm yet? Are they immersion breaking because they have yet to find a helm?
The on/off feature looks to everyone else the same as if a person is wearing no helm at all. Unless you inspect the person you have no idea if they are wearing a helm or not... unless they are anon. then you will never know.
So, I guess that was the question. Why would something that doesn't affect you in the least (to the extreme that you have no way to even verify if someone is indeed using the feature or not) bother you enough to say that you have a "hatred" of it?
The higest rated MMORPG on www.mmorpg.com i wonder if it is as good as everyone says it is well there is only one way to find out and that is by buying it can't wait.
All user-rating should be taken with a grain of salt, but indeed, the best way to find out what a game is like is to try it yourself. I hope you enjoy your stay in Middle-Earth and decide to stick around.

Thanks for your comments, and appearing to truely wonder why i say these things. I can answer both of my statements with the same reason.
You are right, someone having a helm show or not show does not affect my gameplay one way or the other, really someone wearing a dress to go fight Orcs doesnt either. But i guess i am too much of a realist, and i really like armor and weapons (as in the real stuff).
They way i have always seen it is that armor is there for your protection, not for looking pretty. If you dont like the way a helm looks, because it covers up the hair and face you worked so hard on, then you should not wear a helmet. It is the wanting your cake and eating it too thing. I feel that you have to give up looking pretty if you want the benefits of the armor on your head, i dont see why you should get both.
But again that is just me, and i am probably too much in the camp of realistic armor and what it does. But i will still complain about it.

Sorry, it still doesn't help that game.
Too bad it took them three years to put it in.. so typical of SoE.

I think its a nice idea for PVE based games like LotRO, and bad one for more PVP oriented games since recognition of what a player is wearing can be an important part of knowing the capabilities of your opponent.

That's exactly why in LotRo this feature will be disabled in PvP zones.
The customization system will be disabled in the Ettenmoors and all future MPvP areas. They were one step ahead of you... this time.

Thanks for the follow-up. I can respect that others will have differing opinions on matters like these. That's what makes it fun to play in a MMO... all kinds of people with differing opinions coming together to accomplish a common goal.It will become a common practice in all future MMOs.
Mark my words.
Why will it become the new "standard?"
Because people are:
A) Tired of the devs telling us what looks cool, maybe I don't like the look of the uber gear
Tired of looking like garbage until you get the uber gear
C) Tired of looking exactly like everyone else
For the PvP issue, I think this should apply to PvP as well. But you don't get to choose what you look like. Let me explain:
PvP based on Rank, like LOTRO, and like LoTRO MP you get new looks when you gain Rank.
That way, you can look at another person and see what PvP Rank they are without having to mouse over them or click on them, etc.
Why? Increased performance, instant recognition of a player's relative prowess in PvP.
And also, what Army is the history of Armies has NOT had some sort of uniform? Some sort of visible identifiers of rank?
Prove to me you're uber based off what you do in PvP, not on how many shiny epix you are wearing.
I actually don't like the idea at all. But I know I'm in the minority.
The way I see it, it's just a cheap stopgap measure so they can avoid providing more options for customizing appearance of items or providing a way to layer appearance clothing OVER your armor. It is going to create absurd situations like female guardians tanking dragons in ball gowns.
If you care so much about how you look in town, why not just switch to clothes? If you care so much about how you look while fighting, it's really not that hard to get your armor to look good as a set, even if they are mismatched pieces.
Of course, my dislike for this idea runs far deeper than the cosmetic aspect of it. It goes more to the fact that I have a strong dislike for the type of itemization this game (along with WoW and others) uses, where gear conveys statistics (rather than just doing what it is supposed to do) and is level dependent, and therefore providing a reason to mix and match pieces that don't go together. I'd much rather play a game where the "stats" for a particular item reflect what it really is.

Sorry I have never thought anyone was uber because of PvP, especially in this game where PvMP is really a joke (but trying to improve so I will give it that.) PvP rank here...earned by standing in a group outside or inside a fort trying to hit everything you can so if that player happens to die you earn credit. Or wow you must be uber, 4 of you ganked 1 player...give me a break. There is no fair fighting or balance in this to where skill actually comes into play. The only thing I would think if a players clothes showed off PvMP aspects is "Ok, they PvMP."
I have much more respect for someone wearing epics because most of the time it was earned through group play and you had to do your job within a team to succeed.
I look forward to the clothing option coming and I think it will enhance game place nicely.
