Which is better, WoW or LOTRO? They cost the same monthly fee of $14.99, but LOTRO has an option of a Lifetime Subscription ($300). WoW has a VERY extensive world, getting bigger with each expansion, and LOTRO has half the character choices of WoW. What is your opinion on the subject? (I am going to test it myself soon because I've played WoW for over a year and I am downloading the free trial for LOTRO as we blog. I'll give you guys my own opinion soon enough).

Personally I liked Lotro but as all opinions, this one is biased. I quit WoW in 3 days, Lotro was a lot more interesting, atleast for me.

I LOVED Lotro, for a few months. Then I started to hate them for all the stupid "Follow up quests"
You cant find groups because most people have done the quest before you, and you cant join them because you have to do your own quest first to get the quest they are already on... Get it?
So you stand there spamming LFF all night and log off. ALL the quests are group quests so its not like you will be able to do anything on your own anyways..
lvl 39 and i upped and left it. Good game but their Quest system is a real pain i think... VERY annoying.
Thats my opinion.
Personally I beta tested both, had a sub with wow (on and off because i honestly got peeved off at the sudden change in end game direction after launch. I'm not a WoW hater just a WoW objector i won't give them anymore of my money) and I didn't sub with Lord of the Rings (because I was already tired of MMOs by then though im amping up again ready for others) but I still ahve to say Lord of the Rings is better.
Their customization options & Book of Lore features blow anything away that WoW has to offer for PvE'ers. You don't have to raid, you dont have to be in a guild, you can solo, and you dont ever have to PvP for gear. If you like raids, instance gear grind pvp, super inflation on the auction house markets, and a tad more choice in where you go at certain levels but nothing really new or exciting then WoW is better.
WoW is several years older than Lord of the Ring so choice of content / player classes is going to be very different. Wow you have to PAY 50 bucks for expansions Lord of the Rings expansions are atleast free, plus they have a superb housing system I hear and their crafting puts WoW's crafting to shame.
Good luck with the trial though I think from just the title of your thread alone your going to prefer WoW over Lord of the Rings. Once a Die hard WoW fan..pretty much always a die hard wow fan.
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
thank you Eremitt, that helps me a lot. So the quest system sucks. Hows the fighting and graphics and all the other things?
IM NOT BEING SARCASTIC THOUGH IT MIGHT (MAYBE) SOUND LIKE IT

LOTRO for sure! I love the game. I have a lvl 50 champion and Burglar, and I'm currently leveling up my 31 Captain.
The PvM is very fun as well for me. I never have liked PvP in games but I love playing as a monster (creep) in PvM.
I've tried both, I prefer LOTRO over WoW. I didn't stay to play either of them, so I can't go much beyond that.
I have also tried both games and I prefer LotRO over WoW. Maybe that's because I'm Tolkien fan but until now, everything seems interesting and worthy playing it. However, about "suck quests"... I would say that depends on server you're playing on and parts of the day you're playing it. Some days you simply won't get the group, but when you'll log-in next time, you'll see 2 groups looking for fellows for that Q.
And no, there is just about 1/3 of group Q. However, you should try it as you said.
I've played both. Played WoW for 3 years and currently playing LOTRO. My opinion is both are good games and each has features that are fun and caters to different types of players.
WoW
* All dungeons are instanced (5, 10, 20, 40 man dungeons).
* Possilble to solo 1-70 (but painful) without doing any quest altho the game is heavily quest/tasks oriented
* Possible open PvP in contested lands in PvP server. Altho there's open pvp in the world, most people opt to use the battlegrounds (or BG) which is pvp in an instanced enclosed area.
* Caters to all player types: casual pve, mid-hardcore pve, hardcore pve, casual and hardcore pvper
* Very loot oriented game. Players of same level with high level epic pvp or pve gear will trounce players with "casual gear".
* PvE Faction grind is a must to acquire good gear for most circumstances.
* PvP grind is a must to acquire good gear for most pvp circumstances. Esp if you are participating in the Arenas/BGs
* End-game 24 man raiding play is available as a hardcore option. Casual end-game is also available via the 10 man dungeons.
* Crafting in WoW is pretty much: Gather Ingredient, Combine, Grind till reach next Tier. Most of the good player gear will derive from dungeons, raids, pvp and *rarely* from quests, crafted or random drops.
* World feels small (altho some areas are huge), most areas are enclosed within a certain level range. Exploration is possible altho somewhat limited.
LOTRO
* Mix of instanced and world dungeons.
* Possible to solo 1-50 but best if played with friends in a party.
* PvP is enclosed in Ettinmoor or via Monsterplayer, a unique form of pvp where players can pvp with players playing monster characters.
* Caters to many player types. But seends to cater most to casual players.
* Not very loot oriented game.
* Minimal PvE faction grind altho it exist in a limited form.
* PvP grind is limited in the form of Destiny point grind.
* Raiding exist as a form of end-game activity altho it's not a MUST.
* Crafting in LOTRO is interesting and the actually useful. Player gear can be acquired via drops, boss raids, dungeons, and mostly quested and crafted.
* World feels huge, travel is limited to walking/stable/mounts (there's no freely available teleportation spells in the game). Lots of opportunities to explore. In fact there's an in-game feature that rewards exploration.
That's the way it was in beta too, thus why I stopped playing the beta since I couldn't find a group to play with and never bought the game for the same reason. Just alot of the same old same old.
This website is a safe haven for trolls and haters. I'm done with this pathetic site.
If you've played neither, play WoW.
If you've played WoW into the ground play Lotro.
It's a similar kettle of fish with either in terms of basic gameplay, however Lotro is a LOT more basic than WoW. You are getting a lot less value for you money with this product.
I'll have to go with WoW.
LOTRO would be a pretty good game if you were able to lvl a monster in the same world and make the pvp meaningfull.
If you like PVP - neither.
If not, then probably WOW. LOTRO was just too simple for my tastes, yeah, even more so than WOW.
agreed, I like to pve untill I hit max level but then all I want to do is pvp ( rvr )
well LOTRO is by far one if not the best looking MMO (graphics wise) that i have come across and it is beautiful on all settings.
LOTRO's quest system is a little bit harsh when it comes to follow up quests and should really be looked at.
combat is a bit different to WoW. mainly in the areas of Fellowship moves (combo's for the whole group) and abilities that are triggered by certain actions
e.g the guardian blocks an attack and 2 skills highlight on his action bar. these required a block action tobe activated and can now be used
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
That was the funniest thing I've heard all month!
Maybe if you get the lifetime sub, and spend your whole life playing LOTRO then maybe you will get to 50.

No....not a hater there...by any means...
Having got that off my chest....
I am also curious about this game. I did partake of the beta and I have done the trial. I am just curious...
Is this game worth it? I am a huge fan of Middle-Earth, so that is not the issue. I am just wondering will it be the same old thing that I have done in Warcraft for the past few years? I have found myself playing less and less of Warcraft in favor of Vanguard lately, but I am such a huge Middle-Earth dork I would really like to try and get into this game...
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Music system. Its the bomb!. I'd say its as good as the crafting in SWG. You can actually play music in real-time via instruments.
Now here is a kicker, I'm not playing LOTRO, only have tried a trial and open beta. or not even have tried the music system, just seen some videos of it and the description of the system.
Personally, much like some other folks, I am tired of fantasy MMO's, but would prefer LOTRO over WoW.
That was the funniest thing I've heard all month!

I barely play at all and I'm 30 already. And look what you play, EvE Online? When do you max your stats in that game? Try 50 years...
WoW is decent, LOTRO is decent. If you like smash-button pvp and crazy action, WoW. If you like better graphics, a complex but interesting quest line, and an easy to learn/difficult to master style of pvp, LOTRO is for you.
I like LOTRO, just more my style.

But Lotro has really nice quests, story, and environment for roleplaying. Also it's graphics are technically better (only graphics, WoW has better animations).
If you like to roleplay, or just do quests and explore the story behind the world, then Lotro is a better game. But if you want to PvP, to raid, or just to do anything other than roleplay or do immersive quests, then WoW is a better game than Lotro. And if you are intrested in crafting and housing, Lotro has housing and it's crafting system is better than WoW's. But honestly, even Lotro's crafting is really simple and in my opinion not fun enough.
PS. Don't buy Lotro lifetime subcription unless you have first tested the game at least several months and are certain that you like it and will keep playing very long.
I like alot of features in LOTRO but it just has some things i can't overlook.....
- Hardly any races.
- Can't play as the orcs and that and have open world PVP with the good guys like you can in WOW.
- Monster play just isn't good and feels like a cheap way to tack on PVP as a afterthought.
- character models don't look good.
- Movement in the game feels very weird like not as fluid as WOW.
- LOTR is cheesey.
I'd pick WOW because i'm into PVP.
