heres one,
i like thief. i like to play stealthy games. i would like to play a thiefy mmorpg, but how silly would it be to have a community of people robbing each other? how about morrowind. you had all sorts of characters in that. imagine morrowind online, where some people play as warriors, some as mages, some as thiefs, assassins, bards etc.
problem with this is that any one programming team may be great at barbarians but lousy at rogues. how about, if somebody produced the world in which we play. then, other programming teams designed the characters to play in this world, so long as they adhered to certain rules. it could be huge, with different storylines all overlapping each other.
hmm?

ive had a rethink as i dont believe i was clear in what i meant.
start off with: how could the thief community play a mmorpg with thief engine and such? you would need some sort of huge city with lots of rich npc's. or you could replace the npc's with players playing a different mmorpg. consider morrowind again. lots and lots of fantasist type players who have an apartment in the capital vivec. they go off each morning hunting and come back in the evening. the thieves dont care for anything outside the city. they hunt by night in the city.
its difficult to explain, made harder because it wouldnt work. but its a nice idea anyway. with this, ultima players can meet everquest players (you only see the style of graphics, engine that your game has). ever wondered what your ultima mage would look like with asherons call graphics? you couldnt play thief with any engine other than the thief engine. but its this overlap of engines which would make the idea impossible.
tommy.
So lemmie get this straight. You want everyone else to play as rich whatevers, and you can be a thief and just steal thier crap all day like in Morrowind but real players. Hmm , i wonder why this wont work
Ultima didnt have levels (Im assuming you mean Ultima Online since this is a MMORPG site), so if your mage only had 59 magery, you should worry about his skills, not his graphics.
yep. i take it youve never played thief then. its very satisfying to steal from the rich and redistribute to yourself. if you were worth robbing, you would hire the relevant guards and security devices. thus, making it harder and more enjoyable to rob you.
i dont know ultima, i just threw it up in the air to see how it would land.
tommy.
The point of my post is to realize that if it would be THAT profitable and fun to steal, everyone would be a thief, there must be balance. You're dreaming, you might as well play Morrowind and just pretend like everyone is real, its the closest you will ever get.
sounds like you, for one, wouldnt enjoy the benefits of thievery. its not for everyone, it doesnt need to be. i would expect more people to enjoy the roleplaying fantasy side of the game. do you play a mmorpg where you have somewhere to store your loot? do you protect it when you arent there? would seem logical to me. knowing there were thieves about, you would insure your lot and hire the best guards you could afford. wouldnt work because of engine overlap. cant think of another reason.
playing a thief in morrowind is nothing like playing a thief in thief.
tommy.
It's not fun when everyone else is a theif in the mmorpg also.

It would have to be one of the more difficult classes to play. They also would have to rob primarily NPCs. And robbing a PC would be the same as attacking if you were detected. Certain items couldnt be stolen such as quest items or bonded ones. It would be harder to steal more powerful equipment. Also, NPC guards would be able to spot thieves if there wasnt a crowd and there was a line of sight, making dark alleys and crowded town squares thief hangouts. Thievery would almost have to be like a tradeskill, and if you fail, you either have to run and hide, or fight and possibly die. Thieves wouldnt be like assassins, so they wouldnt be very good in combat at all.
If you didnt incorporate those things listed above, then pc-pc thieving would probably not work.
