I'm bored of WoW , I thought about going to everquest2 but truthfully I figure its just going to be more of the same. I been reading on these forums, got alot of good information. Truthfully sounds like quite a bit of fun.
Thing is though I remember when this game came out. I didnt play but I heard there was "no" solo content whatsoever. Reading here, I see there is "alot" now? Am I correct? I don't want to solo 100 percent of the time, but sometimes logging in, kicking back, and doing whatever I feel like is fun!
I also hear, there is raiding now? /gasp. What kinda raiding system are we talking about here? Like what kinda numbers do you need for a "raid" (like wows max raid is 25 people). With this raiding would I have to schedule around guild times and such? (No biggie here really just curious).
Also, im old. I know this game has voice chat for everything. Is the community good? I can't bare people screaming in my headphones, gives me a bad headache. I like mature, friendly, cool folks just to hang out with. So basically is community good?
Finally, I know of no expansions, do they update content very often? I read it doubled in content since release. Thats, in my figuring... alot of free content!
Anyway, as I said, im older, like to raid, like to party, and like to take large chunks of my time just to hang out/craft/do instances along etc etc.
Would you recommend this game?

Another question,
Alot of feats/skills and such im not familiar with. I didnt play the game on table top just read alot of the books.
Can you respec somehow like WoW if you make error. Also sorcerer, good solo class? they seem fun
I have just returned to DDO recently and have been pleasantly surprised. A lot has been changed, and there is no need for "grind" anymore.
Many quests now have a solo setting. This will allow you to do the quest easily alone, but you might miss a lot of the extras, as you might not be able to pick locks, find traps, or just have high enough stat to open a runed door. Its there if you can not get a team, but most of the time, going with a team is much more fun
The raids in DDO currently have 16 person max I think. you dont need to always schedule with guild, I see the raid quests teams looking for more all the time. Makes it easier though if you go with your guild, as you dont get random looting, and people dropping off etc.
OLD? How old is old? I am 38. My Aussie guild is mostly 28+, dont really see that many l33t kids anywhere. As for the guilds, lot of guilds available for mature players only if you look around. The Older Games comes to mind...
Currently expansions show every 2-3 month. One of them just came live last week, adding extra 2 levels, skills, "crafting" and lot of new content. (http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/21418)
Turbine is known for great and free content updates since the days of Asherons Call. They are still doing great job with it.
I would recommend it. I love it now. But keep in mind that the gameplay is totaly different from other games out there, and you will need to team most of the time. That said, it is not hard to get a group from or out of your guildThey have currently 10 day trial, so why dont you just get downloading? (http://trial.ddo.com)
See you there!

Due to the huge number of options, its not easy to explain what to do, as you can choose for your self. There are million sorceror builds unlike in WOW, and you can make him what ever you want (you can multiclass)
For example you could make a sorceror that can wield a bastard sword and cast spells. But generaly sorcerors are pretty splotchable. And there is no "solo classes" as such. even my lvl 11 fighter needs a cleric at least, unless you got a nice bank roll for potions

Well in my opinion this game is quite the opposite of WoW. So be prepared for something totally different. As for your questions I'll try answer what I can, and hopefully someone like Vincenz will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.
As for soloing, you can do it now I hear up till around 7th level. But really soloing is ok, but this game shines with group play. There are dungeons for groups that don't take a lot of time to finish and just as fun as doing long dungeons. So with me if I don't got a lot of time I'll just join a PUG for a few short dungeons and get a lot better exp/loot and fantastic teamwork for completing a dungeon.
Raiding has been in for awhile now. Believe the red dragon was the first then Titan I think. I'm probably wrong. But raiding in DDO consists of two groups, so total of 12 people. Way raiding in DDO works is pretty good that every person will have a role in doing something to complete the raid. For scheduling around a raid well I guess that's up to a guild if you join one. Or you can do a PUG raid. Take your chances with that, but you can meet some good people.
Voice chat is good in DDO. I've never had anyone scream into the mic, "yet". Don't wanna jinx myself. I did have one with a PUG I was in and this guy was leading the group, he had run the dungeon several times. We picked up this rogue who went and did his own thing and ended up dying. The leader and him kinda got into it, but wasn't any real yelling.
I believe content is updated every other month. Mod 6 was a pretty big content update with new raids, dungeons and now crafting.
Respecing you can do if you loot a dragonshard. I hope I got that right.
Hopefully I got some of that right. I'm still low level in game as I'm super casual to DDO. But this game is my favorite because of the grouping. Rogues that actually have to disable traps, spot hidden doors, beholders!, and a cool DM voice that narrates dungeons! (except for gary gygax).

LOL. Agreed!
And you got it pretty much right as much as I know,e except that there was a raid already at release, the name escapes me right now (in House P). The dragon came with one of the updates.

Wow im pretty well sold on this game now. I gotta say though character building looks amazing. Also intimidating at the same time. I'll figure it out though
I hope groups are cool with new players and such. If getting groups is as easy as I hear, it sounds like no reason to really solo.
I'm going to give the trial a go. I got few friends playing WoW, we do heroic stuff 5 or 6 times a week. Might be cool game for us!
Thanks for the feedback everyone, see you in game!
I think most of the original post items have been covered, but just to add that there are quests with solo difficulty, explorable areas for soloing, and a lot of quests on normal (hard and elite) play well if you go back to solo them when you are a couple of levels above their level requirement.
Additionally quite a few quests can be be done solo if you think outside the box, giving some really rewarding experiences. Most quests can be duoed at lower levels without too much difficulty on normal, if you take it at a slow pace. Which is by far the best way as you get plenty of time to enjoy the experience of some really nicely designed quests.
7 raids - Tempest Spine, Velah (Dragon), Warforged Titan, Demon Queen, Stormreaver, Ascension Chamber and Shroud
One last bit of advice, there is a panel that shows which quests you have done and have left to do. Try not to jump ahead, but do all the quests at your level before you move on. Otherwise there are some real crackers in there that can be easily missed.
IMO filling that quest sheet is much more rewarding than rushing towards the level cap, and doing them when you have out levelled them isn't half as much fun (except maybe solo if you are not too high).
Yep, everyone's pretty much nailed it! The raids in DDO have a currently inconsistent "flagging" system, so some of them require a lot of scheduling...some don't.
The wiki pages have great information on them for the feats, enhancements, classes, skills, all of that, and are updated pretty regularly if you want to get some help building a character.
Also, one of the players put out a "character builder" offline program that is linked off the main forums.
The lower level dungeons were balanced to add a separate option of “solo” for the lone character. The HitDice/CR is lower then it is on normal and there’s supposed to have been an increase in exp; unconfirmed about solo exp in dungeons.
The outdoor explorer areas have the best design for solo game play. There’s about 6-7 main zones spread out for levels 2,5,7,9,12,14,16; the levels presented are a baseline for a few core outdoor areas. The lower levels aren’t nearly as good as the higher ones and will have limited replay value.
I do soloing although only in 2 areas atm; The Orchard and The Vale.
Raids have a maximum party size of 12. There is no minimum requirement for a raid party other then what’s needed to complete the content. For instance, levers pullies and runes might need to be accessed in unison to open some doors to permit a party to advance within the quest. Not all raids have mechanisms like this although some do and each raid is extremely different then another.
Some guilds set up days and times before hand to help coordinate successful adventuring parties. As an example, my guild is always running a particular raid on Wednesdays regardless if my self or someone else is able nor uninterested in joining. We also have a general process of running raids periodically during the weekends with regular notices being posted in guild chat for “looking for more – x spots open for <name> raid”.
Old? I’m in my mid 30’s as well with a large majority of my guild. We have up to 20 people logged in during Wednesday s and weekends. I believe everyone is either a working professional or married with kids. Foul mouthed behavior isn’t common other then a possible disappointed player who might say something like shit, f-word or ass, even then, it’s not nearly as profane as standing at a bus stop or sitting in a bar.
Age doesn’t mean one’s mature. I’ve come across some old people who acted like 12 year olds and have met some teenagers who command respect with their well mannered behavior and ability to communicate.
Content comes out about every 4 months. The game is 2 years old now and they are on their 6 module of added content. Yes, there’s a hell of a lot more content now compared to what was available when the game launched. I believe there’s close to twice as much although I am sure you can get a more definitive answer by asking this on the DDO forums.
Someone mentioned “the old gamers” and Australia – Meant The Older Gamers (TOG)? If so, the TOG division of DDO was on Ghallanda and was mostly disbanded due to lack of interest. If you play on ghallanda you are welcome to check out my guild, “Omegahood”, to see if it fits with your idea of a preferred gaming community. (send ingame mail to Mindspat on ghallanda)
I am not familiar with the 3.5 rules used as a foundation of DDO. I was an old school AD&D player and had only been familiar with the basic stats, which even then it was NOTHING like the game I had played.
You can respecify spells, feats and enhancements. Attributes and Skills are permanent.
I only play a Sorcerer. It was the character I created when the game launched and did not reroll when I returned a year later. It is a lot of fun and the play style is completely then a caster in other games – nothing like WoW.
*The first raid was “Tempest Spine” and was available at launch; fight a Storm Giant! The Red Dragon was introduced within the first month of the game and is the second raid.
*the ease of getting into groups varies pending the time of day. Evenings and weekends are heavily populated.
I recommend this game if someone likes tactile strategies involving dynamic character makeup’s and enjoy working as a team. While there are areas to solo it is not a game I would recommend to someone who only wanted to play by themselves.
P.S. Gary Gygax sounds like a drunken New York cabby.
Only two corrections
1. Content is now on a 10 week schedule, per Kate Paiz, as they've eliminated the smaller monthlies and are sticking with only the numbered mods. The exception will be this time around, because of the 6.1 Anniversary release.
2. First raid was Tempest Spine
Oops - that's what I meant.
