He doesn't say that like the article does. I saw the video. I don't see him claiming NIU shooting was the fault of video games. He's says that video games might have had affected this person. He doesn't claim that was the reason. The interviewer even says "you claim etc" and he goes "we'll see". So the article's title "Jack Thompson blames NIU shooting on video games" is wrong. But they get more hits like that for their site probably.
I don't think any form of media is the "cause" of violence, but I certainly don't think it helps matters any.
In nature there are loops of cause and effect that sometimes lead to devastating results for a local biome. These causal loops can also lead to another outcome where animals and other organisms adapt, which is the basis behind evolution. These cycles can be seen in other ways as well, like a feedback loop.
The point is, at times things feed off of each other and a cycle is created. I think that is the case with this sociological phenomenon of violence. As we become more reasoned in our ways we are finding the players in these cyclical systems. But at the same time, it's really hard for us to give up on our old ways. Violence is excitement to some people. They don't take the time to realize or to see it's true effects on the group. Heck, I don't even think some people have even developed the skills to notice other people's emotions anymore. It's not cool to care like it used to be.
That's why it's so easy to point the finger and laugh at someone who says, "Video games are the problem." Or someone who claims other forms of media like movies and music lead to aggression. But the fact is that we prompt the production of this media and it leads certain weak individuals into even more horrible states of mind.
I don't know about this guy Jack Thompson though. I'm not sure what his motives are. Sometimes you have to be careful of the messenger and make sure their not riding the wave of a hidden agenda. That seems to be the case of many power hungry individuals in history. But we do need to look at the problem of violence with an open mind as a society. Things are not getting much better for us if we do not.
I play counter-strike and I've never thought about killing anyone. Actually, millions play it and never kill anyone. Yet, one person does and you blame that? Sounds logical.

All I can say is God help us when Conan gets released with people like this guy around....

I don't really think he has to wait for Conan. With games like Chiller, The Punisher, Manhunt 2, Postal 2, and the wonderful Spycraft torture minigame, I think that Mr. Thompson has more than enough interactive gore porn to splooge all over.
Here is the actual clip. I think he's clearly implying it's all because of video games...I'm sorry, I mean "Murder simulators"
The guy went nuts because he played yet another MMOG where he was forced to raid for the best gear.

Think you will find this guy was on prescription drugs and some are pointing the finger there.
Gawwd,
Who let Jack Thompson out of his cage again? I'll grab the muzzle.

Isnt it funny, how some humans never admit to mistakes, so they blame it on something else.
(Be it Ozzy Osbornes music or Grand Theft Auto)
This guy is just getting pathetic.
