I'm about 5 days into the trial, and I have mixed feelings about this game.
Pros:
Graphics are good for the most part. Cities, country side, and toons are about the same as EQ2, Land is all flat for the most part still like EQ2.
Many classes, at lv 5 you have to make decision as to what path to take.
Good UI with lots of abilities along with a deep system of panals to customize your toon.
Population seems OK as far as chat and typing /who. However as I ventured out it did seem to get less, this was on one of the more populated clasic servers ( Gareth ).
Cons:
Map is good and bad, everything is visable, however how they break it down in parts makes it very very confusing.
Main site is very informative on most topics, but if you have questions its like pulling teeth to find answers from fan sites and forums. Many questions go un answered on some good topics.
I'm not too crazy at all about the level display of Monsters, other toons and armor. It goes by color code. everything is gray green and blue are weak, yellow orange are equil and red purple are too strong. This system makes it hard to venture out for later content. and sometimes you don't have a clue as to where you will be questing next, this is by far a big con in my book.
I don't think I'll be sticking this one out for the long run. I was all excited untill I asked about low level dungeons and having a hard time finding info on PvP or RvR content. Maybe I'm not giving it a chance but information such as this and where to go next to quest is hard to come by.

See, this is where people are ruined by quest driven games like WOW. You never learn how to play games like DAOC where you are supposed to explore the land looking for level appropriate mobs to kills.
DAOC has quests, but you really don't level up on them (unless you are in the catacombs). You normally are expected to go out and find an area that has mobs that con yellow/orange to you and you start killing them. Once you level up past them you move deeper in the world and find new mobs to kill.
SI is a great zone for this, as the mobs will steadily increase as you progress ever further outward. But be careful, sometimes they throw some high level mobs in the middle that you have to work your way around.
Not sure what fansites you visited, but these days the only place to really get answers is the VNboards.
There are many dungeons out in the land, but most require a group to really accomplish anything. Soloer's tend to stay above ground and kill the mobs they find there.
A quick Google search for leveling guides finds these that should help you out:
daoc.catacombs.com/forum.cfm
daoc.catacombs.com/forum.cfm
You can find many more than these, just search on DAOC leveling guides. They should make your journey easier.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!
I couldn't agree more. When I first played DAoC at launch I logged in, made a warrior and looked around to see the wilderness and I thought to myself, maybe I should go out there into the dark woods and see what's out there. And so I did. Found a bunch of spiders and started slaughtering. Later I went back to town to sell all the loot I collected and talked to npc's who gave me quests to slay 2 or 3 spiders (not 15 or 30) among other things IN LOW NUMBERS.
I would see others around and I'd talk to them, share info and stuff.. because who knows, maybe they know something I don't. Back then there was no Thottbot.com or Wowhead.com equivalent to guide me by my hand through the things. There are quite a few quests and their wording was somewhat cryptic so that you had to go out and explore and ask people who might have done it. I think this fulfilled the community aspect of the game.
The game does feature an /advice channel, and there are people who are quite willing to help you out regarding a majority of your problems. There is pvp from lvl 1. All you have to do is ask someone and they'd be more then willing to point you in the direction. I'd suggest you level off of the pvp action as much as you can because it tends to yield better exp. However if you are a pve person there are quite a bit of different mobs out there with various abilities to fight. There are numerous dungeons to explore that tend to have a person or 2 in there already... well they used to anyways that you could probably join and go kill with. DAoC was never billed as a solo killing game like you perhaps did in WoW where you make a new toon and run out and just slaughter things by the dozens. People generally looked for groups because it was more efficient and usually way more fun.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I'm in Hibernia as a level 6 druid. Taking it upon my self to find the battle grounds I used the in game help and it told me that I had to talk a horse merchant and buy a ticket to a place called Druim Ligen, I could not find it on any of the maps, so I found the horse guy and no tickets to Druim ligen, something lead me to believe I had to find the horse murchant in Tir Na Nog. still no ticket, getting a little frustrated. I decided to change coarse and ask in the advice channal for how to find dungeons and other group related things to do. I got advice to find the taks master to get a quest to do a task dungeon. Went to the task master only to find out that she would not talk to me. Asked in the advice channal only to find out that you can't get one unless you have the Catacombs Exp. Getting totaly frustrated I quit for the day.
Later I'll try the advice channal for help with the RvR battle grounds. just to let you know The Advice channal is good and everyone helps.
But there is more that bugs me about this game such as the chat, its not too user friendly like EQ2 you have to type everyones name you cant just click on them, and it makes it hard that everyone has off beat names to type, then /who to see what level they are, is not a lot of fun. or it just may take a lot of getting use to.
Are there many dungeons for all levels, watching the chat everyone seems to only lfg to go to Mini ( not sure on spelling ), and it must be a level 50 dungeon ?

I'll admit that for someone who never played I would easily see how the game would be very clunky.
Ok.. moving on...
The easiest way to get to Druim Ligen is a "porter". They are usually close to someone called a "channler".
In fact if you want to go to a battle ground you wouldn't even need to go to DL. Any porter will have a "battle ground" option for destination.
To be honest the BEST xp IS found in battle grounds. You can't do task dungeons without the Catacombs expansion but.. if I remember right I thought they made that free to everyone now. Maybe it was just ToA... but I swear that cats was a free to download now... because they were dropping support fo the ToA client.
the last two expansions you would have to buy if you wanted them.
Regardless TD xp is very bad compared to battle grounds. Unless you find someone who is high level and will group you aka power level you.
Your dungoen question..
There is demons breach which is basicly a low level version of "darkness falls".
There are two versions.. one that is 1-5 and one that is 5-9.
Basicly the first one if you hit 5 and die or get killed by a player and have to release you are out. Same with the second if you hit level 10. Battle grounds are level ranged and work on that same concept.
Battlegrounds are really going to be the best place to level. When you hit 20'ish and up tho it can be very rough if you don't have the ability to get geared up.
I finally gave up on DAoC and its hard for me to really recommend the game to anyone.. mostly well.. if you try battle grounds very much..
You'll probably notice how many classes have "faster than light" speed even tho they have no "in game" form of speed.. and the people that can see you beyond clip and through geometry with their "magical vision" yet are somehow never banned.. anymore..
Anyway.. if there is anything I missed I can try to answer questions you have.. if you are still sticking it out.
I had a lot of good times in DAoC and as a druid you can get groups if you really want them. Tho it depends on server as some are pretty dead.
There are a lot of newer players that were on the classic cluster and looking for groups often.
I really can't comment because I usually just stuck whatever class to a random 50 and level'd it to whatever battle ground.
Oh after demon's breach...
There are "classic" dungeons in various level ranges.
Most peope just xp in the battle grounds and at various levels you can xp in various parts of New Frontiers. Just some areas are on the "danger" side of the mile gates and high level enemy players will kill you because it will be a great challenge for their 50 to actually kill you at level 20...
However, the real challenge will be getting decent gear and its VERY hard as a non established player with little money.
Oh and "mini's" are parts of the dragon quests. There is a series of quests that gives the dragon armor as a reward and there are weapons that can drop off the dragons as well.
I don't know if it actually requires level 50 as you quite often see people in the battle ground wearing the armor even tho it doesn't do much for them at those levels.
First I would like to say thanks for the the good write up Antarious , and with the trial you get the basic game and Shrouded Isles.
And today I had asked in advice and found the battle grounds, found that you had to port to I think to Shrouded Isles then you can see a quest giver to send you to Druim Ligen. However once there you find yourself in a castle setting with other players standing around and not doing anything, I asked using /say why is everyone just standing around, thinking they were all going as a group but no response. After giving it some time I just went off on my own only to get killed by purple monsters and sent back to the castle, when there I noticed that some were talking to an npc and then gone, found that this npc could port you to other parts of the map, so I did as well. I found myself in another castle with lv.50 players, unable to find a port back and none of the doors would open, I jumped off the wall and got killed by more purple monsters. Now I find myself back at the original castle and no port back to the main land. Frustrated I stopped for the day.
I've played WoW, EQ2,GW,D&D Online,LOTRO beta, TR beta and a few other free mmo's and I find Dark Age of Camelot is not very user friendly, I must say that anyone will help using /advice and you guys are great too. maybe I just need some time away from mmo's and it could just be me, but I'll have to pass on this one.
For others it may be a good game if you have more experience than me ( or smarter ) and your just more social to allow others to help you, then try this game because it could be fun and very deep.
Thanks everyone
It's all about community. Getting into a guild, which every last one of them has vets. They will help you with gear and such for battlgrounds and by the way, most i think u will find say that Thidranki and Mholvic BG are the best. and i have to agree. the RvRvR is insanely fun and they have had a long time to work the classes out. for the age of the game, the graphics are very good. ummm another good thing to do, is pick a class that u really enjoy, and max level him. haveing a lvl 50 on ure account endowes said account with some benefits. You get the ability to auto level all character classes (but the catacomb additions) to 20. Secondly you get bonus xp on ure characters. Finally, there is always a good place for a lvl 50 to farm cash, so u can buy and craft as u need with said money, and in turn make more money. And again the guilds often ahve gear laying about or a crafter that can help. just my two cents. Played for a long time, once u get the hang of it, its hard to stop.
Page,
I was trying to offer you help and get you started on the right path in DAoC, This game can be a headache for a first time user. Most people who start DAoC need a helping hand. If your willing to give it one last shot, just check your PM's for my private vent server info and my server info. I will get you started on the right path and you might actually have some fun.
You can actually upgrade to catacombs for free during trial mate, u need to go into your account and enable it . Thats what i did
Couple of methods that speed levelling
task from guards in SI lands - u say 'task' to the guard
Task dungeons if you only got short amount of time to play
Quests arent that good for xp in all fairness however for items some are worth doing
Battlegorunds and the rvr dungeons pre level 10 until u are around 19 then the NF arteas near portal keeps although theres the risk of some bright spark level 50 who thinks its a good idea to one shot u however u dont lose anything.
If you get the catacombs client its well worth running through the quests as this was built with the quests in mind. In the normal zones the quests were mostly added in after.
The levelling guides that someone put in ealrier are a good indicaiton of areas however was geared around a necro with spirit damge weak mobs.
Task dungeions mobs i think are set at %50 bonus xp and SI mobs at %200 bonus xp, cant recall the original zones bonus xp though
Greatness is difficult to appreciate from close up. The great mountain on the horizon is only the ground when you are standing on it.
It seems most of the OP issues are lack of information and not knowing the DAOC lingo. First things first, go download the catacombs expansion.
http://catacombs.darkageofcamelot.com/downloads.php
BG=battlegrounds does not equal WoW battlegrounds.
BG in DAOC are level specific fighting areas ranging from level 1-49. The larger open fighting area, the one you descried, is not where you go. You can go out there at any level, but unless you just want to die, you do not go out there until level 50.
There is a dungeon you can RvR in at low levels, but you can ask someone in game how to get there. What you need to do is go to Mag Mell and go through the gate to SI. Talk to the teleporter. Select ligen. You will then pop up in a boarder keep. Go talk to Glasny. She will give you lots of opens and pick the one that says battlegrounds. You might be able to do this from SI as well. To make sure that you are in the right place, type /map. It should be a small map with only one keep. Everything outside will be your level.
I'm approching the end of my 14 day trial, and I would like to offer just a little info for anyone who would like to try DAoC becaues its not a bad game if your willing to get past a bit of learning curve. Please understand that I could be a little wrong on some of this stuff, So maybe a few vets could add to this.
1) about the free download: "yes" you have to give a credit card, However you can cancel it soon after and still play, when you do it will lead you to beleave you can't continue to play, but "yes" you can.
You download the basic game and Shrouded Isles, you should also download the Catacombs its part of the 14 day trial. with the catacombs you will get better graphics and be able to talk to the Task Master, to get group dungeon quest, and maybe more not sure.
2) Don't play a healer for your first toon, I played a healer in a lot of games but it is kind of hard in this game to start. I had a Druid so I can find groups easy, However Druid's seem hard, at least at first because your pet seems weak and I really had no ranged or up close abilities to solo. I would disengage from fights to self heal, however you do get many buffs. Druid's may be good but there are too many other things you should learn first.
It was much better when I rolled a Viking and at level 5 you can become a Warrior.
3) In reading other post it seems that a classic server is best ( not sure why, something about bots ). I used Gareth and it seemed to be somewhat populated, Not sure on other servers but people were coming out of the woodwork to help, some would even group to show me things.
4) As I said before weapons, armor and monsters use color codes instead of levels. Just jot down on a paper gray, green, blue= weak..yellow,Orange=equal..red, purple= run away, if you do this you will be ok. Someone in a previous reply said that this can be turned off in the options but honestly I never looked.
5)Map is hard to understand, The drop down boxes just did not cut it for me, So what I did is make my own map on paper with all the towns, dungeons, and zones. This took about a half hour and much better.
My only complaint should be the chat box. Now that really sucks that you have to type names, and you can't tell what levels others are, this I can't find a way around however someone in the game told me that most ues a 3rd party voice chat program.
Well a few more days with the trial and I'm going back to D&D Online, It's very populated and getting more so with the latest free expansions, Its the best but you must like to do dungeons.
And thanks for the offer Neonaka to teach me DAoC, but I'm not staying.
There is nothing wrong with playing healers, it all depends on how you spec and play. Druids, for example, are best in groups when they suck at soloing. This is because you train healing and buffs over your pet. There is a middle ground between the two. Also, you need to find a style that fits you. One common thing to do is to buff up your pet and then use it to pull. Once your pet has agro, and you have healed your pet up, then you attack. The key is to always keep the agro on your pet. Also, things get easier as you level up and get new abilties. Disease and DoT are very useful as it root to give you a little break to heal.
The map is not the greatest, but one thing to do is once you use the map is to make sure you have selected for it to center on you. That will make sure it is for the correct zone. As for the other zones, then look at the side of the map to see what the next zone is. You can put the map to show all of the zones together to get an overview. It is not the best system, but you really do not need the map that much anyway.
Color coding is not that hard to learn - it is used in many games including ones before DAOC. For most people it becomes second nature within a matter of hours. What else to use besides color I do not know. One could put "levels" for the monsters, but that tells you nothing. If you are level 7 and the monster level 9, that does not tell you anything about your abilitty to kill it. It only does within an accepted system. It might mean you cannot kill it, but then when you are level 48 you can kill a level 50 easily. So whatever system you have, people have to learn it.
gray=no XP, won't attack unless attacked first. Easy kills
green=little XP, will agro if an agro mob. easy kills and not worth your time
blue=decent XP, slightly below your level/strength. easy kills
yellow=good XP, is the same level/strength as you. usually easy kills as well.
orange=best XP, is slightly higher level/stronger than you. Most classes can kill these solo. You do risk death occasionally with these. Sometimes it just depends on the mob and class involved.
red=best XP, is much higher level/strength than you. Is not worth it solo. Your XP caps out at the upper level of the orange range. You might get a slight more with red depending on the mob, but most classes risk death with dealing with these solo. This is the bottom range of targets if you are in a group.
purple=only do if you have a group. Should only be attempted with those who are familiar with the mob. Not all purples are the same. It could mean 10 levels above you when you are level 10, or it could mean 40 levels above you.
You can make the map center on you, that would be very cool, is this done in options ?
I'm sure druids are good, It just seeme that its a hard class to start with, and I did not even think about buffs on pet's.
This is all stuff that people need to know, as i was unable to find this out on my own.
I am glad that you at least gave DAoC a chance. It is a lot more then most people out there would at this time who are coming into the genre.
I usually take a different approach to games when I first try them. This is the reason why I have a bit of a problem with your approach but to each his own. I generally take about a week to get to know all there is to know in a game by doing as much of it myself with the help of someone who has done it. DAoC is a game that came out at the beginning of the boom of MMORPG's and as time goes on, games get more streamlined and evolve, be it good or bad. Even then the opinion of good or bad is very relative depending on who commenting on it. When I first started playing DAoC it was my first mmo and I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling I got when I first ran it. This may be why I will probably defend this game till my dieing day. I personally like games where not everything is handed to you. I want to be able to explore and figure things out. That was part of the attraction to the game. The different types of armor and their resistances to different attacks. The resists and magic and how you had to co-ordinate your attacks depending on what you were fighting. For instance if you were fighting Ants, or other bugs with hard shells you'd want to find players who specialize in blunt or crushing attacks or find out what the bugs were weak to such as cold magic and bring casters with you that specialized in said kind of magic. I think the game had plenty of depth and a lot of things you had to take into account. It was not as simple as picking up a sword or a bow and shooting just about anything you see blindly without any forethought.
But like I said, I'm glad you gave it a shot. I am sorry that you could not have the same experience that I have had and I'm sure others have had as well. I hope you have the greatest of luck in finding the game that will instill the same feelings I have toward DAoC as well as bring you countless hours of fun no matter how you find it.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
DAOC is the benchmark that I use for all other MMORPG's that I play now, and everything else has been left wanting. Playing WoW after DAOC is like going from university back down to middle school. IMO a great game should make you think and challenge you not go 10 steps that way kill 20 of those things and come back and if you happen to get lost on those 10 steps here is a giant map!
Even now DAOC is not as hardcore as it used to be. Maps...what were maps?
After playing the current releases of new games I struggle because I want to be able to choose between 50 classes and a ton of races. I think I am going to come back to DAOC soon as there are no games that offer the same feeling and excitment that DAOC does.

LOL, I remember that, maps were something you downloaded/printed from the internet that other players made. Sometimes their accuracy was a bit off, but they were great for writing notes on . I kept a 3 ring binder with maps, monster locations, and other stuff.

Click the "m" key to open the map, then check just under the map, there is a big button named "follow" if you highlight it the map will follow you around... wasnt too hard i guess
