I left for over a year and came back but all my characters were still there. Did you delete them before canceling your sub? Did you check all the servers? If so, bummer.
In rare cases I've heard of it happening. They archive some older data, and as a result what can happen is that you log in and one (or more) characters are missing, but then the next day they're all there. If you've ever seen the order of your characters change, or been the first one back to a long-absent SuperGroup and found it locked (without rent due), it's roughly the same thing.
So A) it may fix itself. But in the meantime:
Check all the servers. If it's been a while, it's easy to forget which server was yours.
C) Think very hard if you might have used a different account. Did you ever have two? Did you come back on a trial key?
D) Contact NCSoft support through the account pages where you reactivated. It may take a bit of back-and-forth conversation, but they can generally figure out what happened and if neccessary go to backups to restore your characters.

I have an idea of what might have happened. There were a lot "idle" characters such as yours, from account holders who were not active subscribers. This tied up a lot of character names that new players to CoX wanted to use. They decided sometime (not sure when) in the last year or so that all toons which had not been logged in with after the change were open and I believe are still open to be snagged by someone else.
So basically you have "Crazy Guy" as your character and haven't played in over a year and are inactive then some new subscriber comes along and tries to create "Crazy Guy" he gets the name and you loose the toon. Also if you are an active member but haven't logged in with that toon either the same will happen. I haven't had this happen to me so I am not sure exactly how it works.
You may have indeed have a different problem altogether as I thought with the ability to take a toon's name it just made the personal who lost the name to rename that toon. They very well may delete the characters though I just can't remember. It is something I would check into. If you had common character names then I would say this is the case and if not that's just weird.
Hope that helps.
There has never been a character wipe...
The only thing you could lose is your name.
Check all the servers.
They'll be on there somewhere.
There has not been any character wipe. Characters below level 6 that have been inactive for over a year may have had their name generic123 but for players logging back again, they could change the name.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

I had left for quite a while a few months after beta and when I returned over a year later I found that the server that had my highest level characters had been untouched. They were all there, a little dusty from lack of use, but perfectly fine.
All the other servers had the 'characters' there but their names needed to be changed when I logged them in. That seemed to be a fair way to handle the name-grab problem that CoH ran across early in its life. It seems to me that names are far more important in a City where you are a superheroine protecting the population from evil than in a troll infested forrest.
