What's with the shoulder pads in WoW?

ZindaihasZindaihas Member UncommonPosts: 3,662

I don't play the game, but every once in a while I catch a video on youtube.  This one showed a character from every class.  I know its renown for its cartoony graphics and I don't care about that.  But I noticed how every single one of the characters had these great big huge shoulder pads with spikes that pointed up over the characters' heads.  Does anybody else think that's kind of silly, not to mention completely unrealistic?

You kind of answered that question yourself. Its cartoony. Big, huge shoulderpads with things pointing out over people's heads makes sense, from a cartoon type of view.

    But realistically, no.

Warcraft is essentially an evolved Warhammer ripoff, including character and gear design concepts, same size big bad shoulders in WoW as on Warhammer miniatures some decades ago. Same goes for Starcraft and WH 40k, notice the shoulder similarities of marines.

Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
    +plenty of F2P, betas, trials

Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO
    .
Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.

Yeh but Blizzard are known for taking a existing idea and making it much better.

WoW came out WAY before Warhammer, how on Earth can it be a ripoff?

There's also the ePenis factor. Some people can only feel really powerful with huge over sized armor.

that is incorrect.  warhammer (not the upcoming MMO) has been around for much longer.  began as a table top game.

    Yeah...  the simple answer is

Warhammer 40k  first edition was published in 1987,  Warhammer the Fantasy Battle was 1983

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.. was published 1994 and notably resembles Warhammer Fantasy Battle

Tbh it's about personal taste and most people I know on WOW are over 20 years old.

Blizzard did not "ripoff" warhammer. They paid big copyright bucks to Games Workshop for their Warcraft franchise.

Also: Anyone remember the voice lines the gryphon rider had in WC3? "My warhammer cost me 40k". That should be a hint as well :).

Every game has that focus point on their character designs that have the most detail.  Most normal games focus on chest armor and helmets.

WoW focuses on shoulders.  Its a stylized thing but it also saves them some polys. Look at the chest armor of a WoW character.  It's just a texture map placed overtop the character's bare skin.  The same thing for the legs and arms.  To make up for this sneaky little lazy man tactic they place huge gloves boots and shoulders ont he characters.  You will notice that all the modeling time went into those objects.

As someone mentioned before, Warcraft characters are modeified Warhammer characters.  Warhammer was around long before Blizzard.  As a matter of fact Warhammer HIRED Blizzard to make an RTS back in 1989.  Ends up Warhammer didn't like the look of the game.  It was too happy and cartoony.  So Warhammer scrapped the project.  Blizzard then decided to market their work as a different game called Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans.  Hence the true birth of blizzard began.

Hey, talk to games workshop as to why they rejected Blizzards game.  That's the reason most people konw about that company.

BTW it was arond 1994 that Warcraft was made.  Also Blizzard was around much earlier.  They made Lost Vikings, Blackthorne, and Rock and Roll Racing.  (2 awesome games)  So I stand corrected there.

Well see the answer is easy, the NFL players play and were kinda mad and upset they could not have big badass shoulderpads to go along with their ingame egos, so blizz made the pads the size of small buicks on each side... so there you have it, the history to the giant size shoulderpads

If you want to talk about ripoff.

Check the ending of starship troopers and then beat starcraft single player with terran on either vanilla starcraft or broodwar. One of them ripped off the other. It is ridiculously blatant as well. If you also think of starship troopers it's basically terran vs zerg lmao.

But check out the endings of the movie and the victory of terran in the single player. They're the same.

Just stop. Please. Seriously, just go away. If you have nothing constructive to say, then leave and never come back. Every time you post something I have to read this idiotic garbage, and it makes me sad.

I guess I can be thankful you can't be bothered to post more than 2 sentences.
