WoW is Dead. EVE is no go.. what now?

ArngorfArngorf Member Posts: 25

Hello Fellow Games,

Im looking for a new game at the moment and is generaly not very impressed with the games Ive looked on so far. Therefor I hope to find some help here, to get an idea of where I should look, if it will even be possible.

To tell my story, Ive played hardcore WoW for 1 year or so.. raiding allmost every PvE encounter and also explorered the PvP content which is lacking just as much.. as a game WoW is ok I guess, but seeing it turn into a Cash Cow makes me angry. I dont know if its the developers or the, high difficulty rated, finance monster sitting at the back (Blizzard) who have allready made the plan for wow for the next years, who ruined the game.

Ive also played hardcore EVE-O (my first game actually) and still has 2 active accounts which has been ticking in Skillpoints for the past 4 years, but the game has little instant action.. every thing you do has to be thought through over and over again in order to not make a serious fault which may cost billions of ISK (lets call ISK, gold or whatever you can relate to)... and because the risk vs reward is not balanced with the time I can spend on the game, it is a "no go" for me.

I like both PvP and PvE and the ability to craft stuff. I hate when a world is static (WoW) and I love when its changing (EVE). Ive allways had that dream of a game where you log in to find yourself in a house you build yourself. go build som stuff and carry it to a city to sell it which could take hours. But including combat action with good gameplay is a must.

I think I got to the end. does anyone know if this is possible or just a dream?

Kind Regards

Arngorf

Its pretty much the end. I have been looking for such game (building your own house, world ever changing by players, non-linear questing, skill base, etc...) This use to be SWG pre-CU. But thats finished now.

I've exhausted all options while looking for that perfect game... it doesnt exist, its not in development either.

I played WoW for 2 years also... that game is dead, you are correct. I tried EvE, but never got into it, I suppose I dont have the time for it. Currently, I reinstalled CoV and kinda having a little fun here and there while still looking around for other games.

Things dont look all that good. AoC and WAR are over-hyped. My guess is, its game over for people like us.

    Ya know, I agree.

I think my hopes are similar to yours.  Lots of player-made content, super fun combat, immersive world.  PvP is tricky...if its open PvP (with building loss available) then the "risk-reward" issue pokes through.  If the PvP is too secluded...it loses meaning and immersion.

I wouldn't call it impossible...I'd say it would take a lot of testing to get the formula right and that its pretty hard.  By hard, I mean it would take a lot more development time to structure solid combat AND balance player made content in such a way that allows freedom over "Uber choices".  Since developers and programmers cost a ton of money, and the timeframe would be larger than standard MMO's....AND the player base isn't as initially large....I don't see any major company doing it.  If the majors aren't playing...then you have to deal with the weaknesses of an indie group doing it.

    Pirates of the Burning Sea

Good PvP (RvR) great crafting/trade.  But very guild based.

The combat is more strategy based.

Not the most popular game right now, but people who like it, love.  Much like Eve in that respect.

I think it’s a great game, most people on these forums do not.

I dont think there is a exact match for you but if you have not tried it, I would encourage you to try both LOTRO and EQ2.  The lore in eq2 is exceptional and the game is solid.

Theres really nothing to offer because if you don't like WOW then you wont like LOTRO or EQ2 or DAOC because they're all the same just worse than WOW lol. Then anything different to offer plain sucks apart from EVE but that game is pretty niche..............

This is where SOE screwed themselves over because now everyones looking for a new mmorpg thats different, SWG pre cu coulda stepped in and taken sooo many people but instead they ruined it and it's just a buggy WOW clone.

It bugs me how most MMO's has become an insult to our intellect instead of reward those who can "figure it out" with more work (+rewards) doing so.

On a side note: Thanks for the friendly replies. all I got from the WoW forums when I wrote about my observations about the game was flame upon flame.

    DAOC- best for pvp imo

EQ2- best for PVE ...okish pvp

FF11- Fun game ..varu hardcore if you like hardcore

L2- has open pvp....whic means you always alleart...tons of raids for all level groups...takes a while to level up (bit of a grind)...but there is alot to do at all level unlike WoW.... :)

Personally, I think GW really hit (past tense) the mark on PvP - it's based on skill more than how much time you've spent getting the right gear.  I played semi-competitive Guild Wars PvP, including one tournament with a cash reward (We made it to the final 8 in a 64 guild elimination series).

That being said, GW really fell off the wagon at a later point, and PvP in GW has boiled down to the same setup being used for the past 10 or so months.  Really a shame.  It also lacks immersion & serious reward.

MMOs today are really suffering & struggling.  Too many developers look to WoW & expect to make a game & just thrive.  WoW is really well done, but still very flawed (I consider it an above average game with stellar marketing).  Too often we see people releasing games unfinished or buggy, and fixing them in the following months.  (I recall some crippling flaws to the Warrior in WoW that weren't fixed for almost a year).  Developers either create a game to waste your time (and as a result, your money) or they pander to the audience & wind up screwing it up anyways (I'm referring to GW here).

I'd say that out of the current games, stick to the ones that are free to while away your time while you wait for the 'next gen' MMOs - Conan, Warhammer:Age of Reckoning or such.  If Warhammer Online works out, it'll be stellar.  If not, then, well, on to the next game.  All of the current MMOs are just in bad shape.

I feel the exact same way dude, plus having moved recently and having absolutely no social life just bores me to death.

I want to play an MMO, but I dont like ANY of the released MMO's. I really liked LOTRO, but it got boring really fast for me.

Im just waiting for Darkfall right now, im hoping it releases soon... thats my only and last hope.

There is actually a game that is in development that you may want to check out. It's called Tatsumaki: Land at War, you can find it at http://www.landatwar.com/

I'm not sure if it has PvE, I just heard that it was a kind of player-based world. I personally don't think it will be finished any time soon. And it's kind of limited to Japanese cultures, but whatever.

Another would be Darkfall, which I am excited for myself. Darkfall is limited to PvP though, so if you like to do PvE a lot then it might not be what you're looking for.

As for current games out, I'm pretty sure nothing exists. I kind of find myself in the same situation as you, I really want to play something but cannot find anything special.

I've been there too with SWG, WoW, GW, LOTRO, Eve, and currently EQ2 while I'm waiting for something new to try.  Personally, I like lots of crafting, PvE and occasional PvP as an optional diversion.

I loved the fancy crafting in SWG and had lots of fun with the Bioengineering until Sony ruined by removing all the stuff that made it special, including all my favorite classes.  I also got burned by Sony when I tried Vanguard, which looked promising in beta, but turned out buggy and tedious.

I'd like to try Spore later this year, which looks like it will give the players lots of opportunity to be creative.  However, as with any game that is trying something radically different, we won't really know how enjoyable it is until we get to actually try it out.

I got to say it is a relief to find that i am not the only one that is saddened by the lack of a truly immersive multiplayer experience. Like all of you i have the same hopes and expectations from a mmo and have found all of them lacking. Hopefully someone will soon here our pleas and we will get the game we are looking for. Let the sheep keep Wow and Lotro, and give us something with intelligence that takes skill to play.

Now if only Aventurine will actually deliver the game.

But back to the OP, I'm playing EVE until AOC or something new comes out this year.  If I had to play a new game right now I'd probably go with PotBS, TR or EQ 2.

I heard Real Life is such an MMO. Still learning how to play it though.

Nah.  Way too much grind for minimal results, and no matter what you do, you die in the endgame, no respawns.

RL is played while AFK 90% of the time. In fact, I slept through most of it.

That's why I play MMOs now.

DarkFall. Do some research, take a loog at the features list in their forum.

Might have to wait a pretty long while though. :P But it may release sometime this, or next year.

If your looking for a world builder i suggest that you try A Tale in The Desert. Everything is player made. There's no combat how ever but it's basicly a big crafting sand box. Graphics are ok...sorta. Small comunity (only about 1.3k people online at a time) but the game is very addicting.

Try UO Kingdom Reborn. They have added hotbars and such. But I am a old MMO dinosaur so the top down, total sandox gameplay that I like may not appeal to you

I enjoyed ATitD as a player developed world (allowing players to vote on game rules is a neat idea).  I also liked the dynamic game updates which meant that the servers were rarely shut down for maintenence.  There are also several innovative mini-games that can be played against other players in-game and artistic competitions where players try to make the most innovative display.  Anyone that likes crafting should check out the free trial.

The thing that eventually burnt me out on ATitD was the horrible grind at the high levels of development.  Without anything to fight to provide risk or challenge, the main way to make more advanced projects harder is to require 100s or even 1000s of the materials used to craft it.  While there is some machine automation to handle some of the tedium of things like making 1000s of bricks, it gets to be more work than fun.

Although I like crafting a lot, sometimes I just want to go out and kill stuff for loot.  ATitD could be a much richer environment if combat was added.

Worse than WoW? Are you mad. EQ2 and DAOC are not worse than WoW. I choose to play WoW because its the only game that runs without any lag what-so-ever but if i had a better system, it would be another story. Of course, this is just my opinion, but it angers me to see people hyping WoW over games which offer so much more.

    Back to the OP...

I suggest you wait until 2008 is over. There are loads of good games due to release this year and some of them, like WAR are tipped to be the next big thing, as for AoC, i have my doubts. If you into Lineage II or Archlord... that type, wait for Aion as thats probably going to be the biggest game in the East. If your a stargate fan, they are bringing out a game 2008 Q4. Vanguard has great potential and is just going to get better as the months go by. 2008 is here, there will be a game for everyone by the time its over, hopefully.
