Bill Gates says keyboards will become less and less important as computer technology advances.

I have thought for a long time that computers will eventually become voice activated. If that happens, will we be able to just voice our commands when playing MMOs?

I shudder to think...all the disgruntled "Vets" along with all the lemmings...wow...would anything get done?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I saw something on the news about a new game that lets you move little balls of light on the screen with your brainwaves. You wear a helmet and control the little balls of light on your screen. Wierd.
AAH! A troll fire! Quick, pour some Kool-Aid on it!!!
I also reckon we'll eventually be using our brain waves to do play our games...though it will probably take some practise before we're able to do things in rapid succession or multitask if that's even possible!
I SHALL BE GOD KING OF THE LIGHTBALL LANDS! THEY SHALL BOW TO MY EVERY WHIM!
Ahhhh...the day it happens....
.....I'll probably get annoyed that I had to "think" my character for 4 hours to gain a level.
keyboards will always be used for the easy hotkeys tbh
So the helmet fits around the penis?
Yeah right. Maybe we should get speech recognition first. I mean one that actually works.
Voice commands as a game controller would be extremely boring imho lol. Just sitting there talking to the computer is so uninvolving!

voice activated? dosent sound to logical, when there are very hightech systems which can detect brain waves. And if you could control somthing with your brain there would be no need for hotkeys and stuff.
i agree that it will be a combination , that helmut brain waves reader for sure , with headphones and mic. and the mouse and keybourd will be there for a very long time , i would say for ever.
mouse + keybourd is like the hard phone lines , we still use it even with wireless tecnologie , simply becose its a more solid interface.
how it will affect the future of mmos , from what i have seen in the brainwaves reader helmut , its obvius how it will change.
what i cant imagine is how fast will people be able to manage stuff with this interface , will it be much faster then what we can do with the mouse today ? becose if it will be , imagine using the helmut for windows. for work ! how fast can you open and close folders , copy paste , drag and drop , alt tab , scroll down ... when i start seeing this moving really fast .. or if just a bit faster then the mouse that is already ridiculus fast.. its sci fi time.

Ahhh!
God! ...That's glorious!
i respect bill gates for all the charity work he does and as a very savvy businessman. but when it comes to predictions he should have learnt from the "64kb ram" .
the conventional keyboard layout will remain for god knows how long. the way we input might change, touch screen, motion sensitive etc but the fundermental qwert will stay for a while. voice is voice, but not a replacement for typing. you don't want to readout a 700page novel. sometimes words come out better thought than annunciated. can you imagine a library or office full of people screaming commands into their pc? and the whole thought sensing thing, well when you see a cripple overtaking you on the freeway you know it's time a for upgrade.
I can see it now...
Sitting there with the brainwave helmet playing a MMO, and as you're concentrated on "writing" something in chat and fighting some dude, this great piece of "behind" walks by your character...
Suddenly your character is following the "behind" and the chat became "Yeah, this guy is good, but I'll beWHOA GREAT BEHIND HUBBA HUBBA WANT!"
The last of the Trackers
But i am thinking of a game along the lines of .hack, and i dunno about you guys, but THAT would be a WoW killer.
Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online
Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2

with no keyboards, im thinking something like this will be used
Bleh
Voice might make progress, but it will never drive keyboard input away.
The problem with voice input is, that it disturbs all the people around you. Can you imagine a dozen employees in a company all "dictating" their memos into a microphone? Or video game kids, who should long be in bed, still secretly playing their favourite games with voice control? Quite unlikely.
I also think this belongs to the "640 kb" category of Bill's "predictions that never happened (TM)".
Years off, Years off. Although it would be interesting to have to yell a battle cry before you started to attack an enemy. Not to mention taunts linked with certain speech phrases like "This brutal beating brought to you inpart by Jebidiah and weaklings like you!"
What is actually interesting is integrating more RPG elements into MMORPGs like the very immersive UI that Fable 2 uses.
"Gates plans to retire as Microsoft's chief software architect in July and focus on philanthropy."
Money PLZ!!!
I think we will see more gesture related control wayy before any practical brain wave control.
Kind of like Wii combined with advanced touchscreen - but more practical for normal activities.
Think.... Minority report meets 3d projection technology.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
voice is extremely impractical, a whole classroom filled up with users. what an amusing thought.
as for the brainwave sensor, these require extensive training of both yourself and the machine. you'll be lugging one of these around or using a network service, both of which would be terribly annoying.
keyboards and mice will be here for a very long time.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
