WoW came out WAY before Warhammer, how on Earth can it be a ripoff?

that is incorrect. warhammer (not the upcoming MMO) has been around for much longer. began as a table top game.

Oh really? I guess I spoke too soon, thanks for clearing that up.

Blizzard originally wanted Warcraft to be a Warhammer game, but couldn’t get the license so they tweaked the lore a little and changed the name slightly.

As for the shoulders, it’s because WoW is mired in the abysmal pit that passed for fantasy art in the 1990’s.

Yeah they have always bothered me.

The thing is I can accept that that is the games style but when nthe designers and in game artists make it so the shoulders cut through the characters head when they swing their weapons or cast spells is just plain lazy.

Hrmmm. The OP states "...kind of silly, not to mention completely unrealistic".

Undead Mage casting a giant fireball at you or turning you into a sheep...

Night Elf Druid turning into a bear, or cat, or bird, or walrus, or whatever...

A Dwarf Priest miraculously healing you of all that ails you...

Non-existant races and beings hurling magic and performing amazing feats sits well with you, but the shoulderpads are unrealistic? I can learn to cast lightning bolts from my fingers, but the idea of having a spike on a shoulderpad taller than my head...now that's just over the top!

The whole game is fantasy and unrealistic. You argument is stated poorly, instead, you should simply state that you disagree with the art direction of the character armor, in particular, the shoulderpads. "Unrealistic" kind of loses meaning in MMOs.

I think the question is why not? They look cool, overdone and totally ridiculous. It allows freedom for the designers to create stuff that looks awesome and fun. It's completely unrealistic, but so is the most things in fantasy MMOs; what's the point in getting stuck in the realism swamp when you can be creative?

That cracks me up. We are talking about FANTASY games. There is no realism in any of those.

While people have different preferences, this art style certain catches your attention, doesn't it? (Even though you may not like it)

You and Zionaxx must both be WoW fans. There is a clear difference between what is believable and what is unrealistic, even within the fantasy genre. You enter a fantasy world expecting there to be spells and dragons and wizards, etc...but that world still has to follow certain rules to make it seem somewhat believable. Why do you think Peter Jackson put so much work into making the LotR movies? When that balrog came out of the Mines of Moria to chase the fellowship, you believed it was a real balrog, even though there is no such thing. That's because it was carefully computer generated and seemlessly edited into the film. If they had put a guy in a monster suit and had him chase the fellowship around, would you have laughed and thought that is was completely unrealistic, or would you have just said to yourself, "Oh well, this is fantasy anyway, so even though I know its just a guy in a monster suit, I don't care."

Exactly. It has to have limitations. It's a fantasy game, but it has realistic stuff in there as well. The trick is to find a balance that fits nicely with both mixed together. The shoulder pads are too exaggerated, and as such, look kinda bizarre. You can have fantastical stuff in there, but you can't overdo it, or it just looks stupid. Anyway.. I'd chalk up the huge shoulder pads as being a throwback from older fantasy art.. probably that and a mix of ridiculously poor graphics.

This is a 3d game and the shoulder look gives off the impression of power and rarity. So when you look upon this huge orc with spikes on his shoulder pads. You know hes a badass with great armor.

If everyone look like the tin man no one would enjoy their fantasy character look as much.

Edit: To the above poster. You shouldn't limit a world to our world limitations. I think if you wanted to create something new and unique. Go far beyond what people think is realistic. Who knows it could be the next electricity.

I love that armour is crazy, as are the weapons and the mounts increasingly.

    Eh...WOOT?

Warhammer started 1983. so when did warcraft start? 1994, doesn't that make Warhammer older then warcraft. Correct me if i'm wrong.

If you mean WoW MMO came before Warhammers MMO then sure afcourse anyone knows this, but to say WOW came in before Warhammer simply isn't true.

You need to do some more research before you post stuff like that. Look at the race, Undead. Their shoulder pads are tiny. Its only Taurens/Orcs/Dreanie who i believe to have big shoulder pads.

    Whatever you say =)

lol, actually he's right, majority of WOW players are over 20.

Since we are pigeon holing here, all Vanguard players are just elitist snobs who think every other game is for kids, just because they suffered through leveling in that piece of crud game. I mean you have the most obnoxious sig I've seen on the forums for instance! Look at me I'm a Vanguard player!

EDIT: haha great comic.. and also the person above is correct, try playing a blood elf or an undead, you can barely see the pads :p

Rofl, Warhammer is "just" like few decades older.

Yeah... the simple answer is

Warhammer 40k first edition was published in 1987, Warhammer the Fantasy Battle was 1983

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.. was published 1994 and notably resembles Warhammer Fantasy Battle

Ahhh, but the answer is not that simple.
WoW took 95% of everything in it, from Diablo 2. The other 5% came from Warcraft (mostly names of famous NPCs).

The key factor that made, and still makes, Diablo 2 soo different, soo incredible, soo popular even now, it took from an earlier game. Which came out before even Warhammer was even a thought. The name of this game is called :

    "ROGUE"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_(computer_game)

It came out around 1980. It came out earlier in limited release, but got a major signing with a major game publisher in 1980.

How come few current gamers have ever heard of ROGUE? (Including me heh. I found out roughly 2 years ago!) Because it's creators went broke. Mostly from hackers. Later when Diablo 1, and Diablo 2 came out, it's creators were far too broke to even think about suing Blizzard for blatant copying.
